Hold the phone. On the eve of the release of Oliver Stone’s flick “Alexander”, I’ve come across this little tid bit. While writing my last post, I discovered that ANOTHER Alexander film (no, not a sequel) is already in production. This one staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman. What makes this project look even more interesting is that it’s being directed by Baz Luhrmann who is the genius behind Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, and Strictly Ballroom. Sign me up! I’ll watch anything this guy directs. The film apparently is scheduled for a 2006 release.
Besides, take away all the controversy and hopla around Stone’s Alexander, and I’m really not all that excited about it. Now I have something even better to look forward to! Smiles.
Why doesn’t somebody do a movie of Alexander based on his eight year military campaign through Asia and his rise to power. You wanna talk about something that would be action packed to the core and could make “Lord of the Rings” look like “Lord of the Dance.” You could easily make a movie with a script based around Arrian’s “Anabasis of Alexander.”
This is old news John, there was even a piece in Entertainment Weekly months ago about this whole thang. BUt rest assurd the Baz version should suck just as much as Moulin Rouge.
I actually completely disagree with you miles.
I thought R+J was a pretty entertaining adaptation of a classic and worn-out Shakespeare story. It made me want to read the damn thing, which is an experience I will not soon forget,…since it took me like 2 weeks to read it. Anyway, I think Baz is a talented director with a particular style and approach, so his Alexander could be interested.

I remembered recently reading a few articles about this and a quote from Nicole Kidman saying it’s not going ahead ??
I really enjoyed the “red carpet” production design of R&J and Moulin Rouge. I thought R&J was quite clever and interesting to watch. Moulin Rouge has a good soundtrack, but it’s a chore to watch as the script plods and is riddled with cliches.
As for Alexander, I don’t know why Luhrmann is still pressing on with this. The subject doesn’t interest me in the least, and I doubt the Oliver Stone version is going to do well at the box office or generate much interest.

i hate this guy, moulin rouge was a big piece of trash, (well, the sets were cool), romeo and juliet was terrible (i mean, leonardo dicaprio..although i will agree he was icke din cathc me if you can), and strictly balroom just made me want to go watch porno and drink whiskey without any mix.
i would say all those people clamouring for gay content in alexander are going to recieve it by the boatload in 2006!!

Both films were announced at around the same time (I believe), although Luhrmann soon conceded that Stone would beat him to it. The fact that Luhrmann has decided to proceed speaks volumes about his opinion of Stone’s version.
