Sofia Coppola Tackles Marie Antoinette. I Know How This One’s Going to End.

SofiaCoppola.jpgAfter a pair of critically acclaimed ultra-low budget indie films – The Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation – Sofia Coppola is making the jump to big budget studio fare, signing on to tackle the story of Marie Antoinette. Kirsten Dunst will be playing the teenaged queen, which makes a pretty good degree of sense, with Jason Schartzman starring as King Louis XVI, which makes significantly less sense on the face of things, though I’ve got to say I’m curious what Schartzman will come up with for the role. All the details are here.

  1. It makes me mad to see inaccuracy of the costumes for 18th century period flicks. Georgian was so elaborate and colorful, the pictures I’ve seen for the production show that whoever the costume designer is isn’t the most experienced when it comes to this. I think because of the know-it-all for a certain costume designer, especially when it comes to the Georgian period, that Sofia should’ve contacted the man who did the clothing for Dangerous Liaisons. Nothing was wrong with the costumes, but the hair was another story. I’m big on the 18th century. Also… the key hairstylist for Jefferson in Paris was accurate, and should’ve been contacted as well. But I do believe it to look promising.

  2. After reading the above (or below) comments about JS in the role of the King, I have to admit that I agree with them.
Personally I do not see JS in the role of Louis XVI as there are not any similarities between the two. Whilst the king had a teutonic (germanic) personality (blond hair, fair skin, blue grey (glassy) eyes, tall and robust), JS is totally the opposite (with very latino features).
If Sofia wants to give him an important role, he can play the King’s youngest brother Artois (who was the play boy of the family), having dark eyes and a quite dark complexion (though again not so dark as JS)

With regards to the film in general, I am looking forward for it as it will relate the story of one of my most favourite historical characters – queen Marie Antoinette. Hope that Sofia will follow the book of Antonia Fraser as the details and historical events are so much true to what they originally were.

  3. It makes sense in that she’s got an established relationship with Coppola and her best dramatic work (in my mind, anyway)was in Coppola’s Virgin Suicides. From a marketing standpoint as well … there aren’t a lot of late teen / early twenties actresses that you can sell a film on. Really, she’s pretty much it. And she does have some good acting chops, has done period work in the past, etc. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her turn in a truly bad performance.

And I gotta say I just saw the full trailer for I Heart Huckabees and Schwartzman looks bloody awesome in it. A major turn for him, a far older and more mature (for lack of a better word) look that has totally cleared up for me why she’s using him. He can do this. Of course, come to think of it, he’s got Coppola connections, too, thanks to CQ … actually, come to think of it some more, I think he’s related … all is clear now …

  4. How does Kirsten Dunst playing the role of Antoinette make sense? I like Dunst and everything but I have to admit I’m very nervous to see how she’ll handle the role.

  5. I’m just wondering who’s style she may copy this time. Her “Lost In Translation” flick reflected many elements of Wong Kar Wai’s “In the Mood for Love”.

The Tarantino/Coppola duo makes no film safe !!

  6. I wanna see how j.s pans out as King Louis. I wanna see how Coppola does with big budget. Does anyone else think Sofia is soooo hot. Ahh, celebrity crushes – i guess it’s better than Ashlee Simpson right?
