The 7 Movies Up For The Visual Effects Oscar

The seven movies listed are are going to be reduced to 3 on January 25th when all Oscar finalists are announced, but for now, the debate can begin. I like all the films listed here (as far as the visual effects go), except I still haven’t seen The Aviator. Anyway, here’s the list:

– The Aviator
– The Day After Tomorrow
– Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
– I, Robot
– Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events
– Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
– Spider-Man 2

Ok, here’s my pick for the final 3 (once again I still haven’t seen Aviator). In no particualr order. 1) I, Robot – wasn’t thrilled with the movie, but the effects were jaw dropping. 2) The Day After Tomorrow – same comment as before. 3) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow – Right now I think this is the one that should win it all. Just so damn creative. Your thoughts?

  1. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow all the way. Like venger said, it is the only really innovative sfx movie of the year. We have not seen anything like it before, and it was beautifully done.

  2. I’m not surprised Polar Express is not in there. Gollum has already set the bar for this kind of animation. To do anything less than that would be to expose its technical deficiencies quite glaringly.

Still, Polar Express is not without its merit and it should be cited for whatever effort the creators have done to make it.

BUT, it just so happens there are OTHER movies that far surpass it in terms of visual effects.

  3. Sky Captain hands down. This is the only movie of the 7 that really did something creative with sfx. I wasn’t impressed at all by the sfx in I, Robot it looked way too slick and lego like. The day after tomorrow and harry potter were good but nothing really special. I haven’t seen Lemony Snicket and The Aviator yet so i cant judge them.

But after seeing Sky Captain i’ll be very surprised if they don’t win it.
