TV’s “Angel” gets cancelled

— Posted by Rodney

angel.jpgSome sad news for TV. Some good news for films:

“Angel,” staring DAVID BOREANAZ as a vigilante vampire, has been axed. This season, the show’s fifth, will be the last for the WB series. “Angel” got its start in 1999 as a spin-off of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Ok, some of you may be wondering why I’m posting about a TV show here on The Movie Blog. Here’s why. Although I really enjoy Angel, and will miss the show very much, this could be a fantastic thing for David Boreanaz. Boreanaz is a solid actor who also has the physical attributes to be a legitimate Hollywood leading man. As a matter of fact, the rumor mill early last year was buzzing about him being the next Batman√¢‚Ǩ¬¶ that would have been cool to see. So, while I’m sad to see Angel leave the air, I think this will push Boreanaz out the door of television and force him to really pursue a big screen career. And I think he’ll succeed. Keep your eyes open for him next fall.

Shame on you WB! You don’t seem to understand the meanings of words such as imaginative, innovative, exciting, different, get my drift? Thanx loadz Joss Whedon for all of the above & much, much more! …For the incredible fantasy journey, away from the mind-numbing norm that is ‘mainstream’! I miss Buffy & will certainly miss Angel (which by the way I hope a more creative & discerning network will take up!)I guess its back to reading more books again, for me……no more TV…..until Whedon & co return again, with more magical, spellbinding mythmaking wonder!

Im a huge Angel fan and a bigger Buffy fan, but the fact of the matter is….. they’re running out of ideas for new demons. I love the show, but I think they need to let Angel go. And if they’re gonna make a spin off, it should be about Spike. I mean, he is the most entertaining.

I always found Angel a bit spotty, but I was sad to hear this … Whedon is consistently one of the best writers working in tv (Firefly was absolutely criminally under-appreciated … that thing was amazing from episode one) and this pretty much gets him off the air … last I heard the BBC was looking at doing the Giles spin off as a mini series, which I really hope happens. He’s a great character. I’d love to see something done with Wesley as well. But man I hope that Faith spin off never gets made …

Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a good time to weigh in. to answer some obvious questions: No, we had no idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don’t think the WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I’m grateful they did it early enough for my people to find other jobs.

    Yes, my heart is breaking.

When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie. But Angel… we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our stride — and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes ‘n’ Lava. I’m so into these characters, these actors, the situations we’re building… you wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of “The Body.”

As far as TV movies or whatever, I’m not thinking that far ahead. I actually hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a great platform for a new season, of course.) We’ll proceed ahead as planned.

I’ve never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn’t about surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I’ve been lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I have. I don’t FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am.

Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It’s meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80’s — what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet:

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN’ SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn.”

As the statement by warner says they are looking at doing a series of telemovies, at one time Craft said that joss whedon had plans for a “Buffy/Angel” film – not telemovie – but decided to wait until both series were off the air.

It would be the one movie re-teaming both characters, angel and buffy. she fielded a few questions about it, but didn’t know much. just said wait till both shows are off the air and then joss will probably get something going, a’la firefly.

In case some didn’t know. A feature film is in the works based on Whedon’s failed Firefly TV series. In case you wondered.

I take credit for making John watch Angel. Even if he wont admit it.

I am a HUGE Whedonite. I loved Buffy, but Angel appealed to me more, and it is a sad day indeed that this news comes to me.

But there is a shred of hope. WB did not want to continue with Buffy, and UPN picked it up for its last 2 seasons. Perhaps there is hope yet.

Rumours of a “Faith” spinoff with Eliza Dushku were tossed aside when she signed to be in “Tru Calling” (which I haven’t seen) Other rumours include a spinoff series called “Ripper” which would follow Rupert Giles attempts to reform the Watchers Council to govern over the wake of new slayers. So far that rumour has been reduced to a TV Movie.

I hope something new comes out in the Whedon Universe. Without Angel, there will be nothing left. And I will have to fall back on Reality TV shows and Smallville for entertainment. Smallville and Angel are the only “must see” series that I watch.

Im going to go weep for a moment
