Charlotte’s Web Has Been Cast

Charlottes_Web.jpgI used to LOVE the old cartoon version of Charlotte’s Web. There is something so simple and beautiful about the story of a pig and a spider hell bent on saving his life. As an adult I still enjoy it when it makes an appearance on Sunday afternoon TV.

Having said all that, the good folks over at MovieWeb offer us the following:

Academy Award®-winner Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, John Cleese, Steve Buscemi, Cedric The Entertainer, Reba McEntire, Kathy Bates, Thomas Haden Church and Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000) have joined the voice cast in the upcoming live-action/photo real CG animated feature adaptation of E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web for producer Jordan Kerner and his Kerner Entertainment Banner. The film will be directed by Gary Winick (13 Goin On 30) and is a Paramount Pictures, Walden Media and Nickelodeon Movies co-production. The feature is scheduled to begin production on January 31st in Melbourne, Australia.

Roberts will lend her vocals in the lead role of Charlotte A. Cavatica, a spider and heroine of the book who goes out of her way to save Wilbur the pig’s life by weaving miraculous words into her webs.

A fantastic cast without question… but who cares. The real question is: “Can the producers capture that same sense of awe and beauty that the original cartoon did”? The short answer for me is “I doubt it”. I’m just not sure this is a film that should be re-made when he original is so good on it’s own. It doesn’t need updating. Who knows… maybe it’ll be great.

  1. I can’t tell you how this makes me cringe. Hollywood has this fabulous talent for taking something good and making it bad.

I love Charlotte’s Web both in book and animated form. It’s one of my favorite childhood stories, and honestly, I don’t want to see it remade.

Not that that will stop this project, but the likelihood of me taking my daughter to see it is small.

I can’t just see their “updated” version including the typical body function jokes and slang speak. It hurts. I can only hope they won’t stoop to that level.

  2. Hollywood has been remaking lots of film left, right and center so this wont be too surprising, let’s just see if it even measures up.

This also stars child actress Dakota Fanning right?

  3. It’s kind of exciting, John, to know that they are remaking it. When I first heard about the remake, I thought to myself “how can they top the original?” I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. It does bother me a whole lot that they are remaking this movie. Remakes always suck hairy ass…

  4. I dont think this NEEDS remade but The teaser they showed at Comicon looked kinda good.
yEAH so the original cartoon is great and will probably stay that way.
I dont think you can shift the original material around too much and for it not to be about death and an unlikely friendship which is always great heartwarming material.
Seriously if the pig farts alot or julia roberts tries to sing that could be very bad.
