Matt Damon returns in The Bourne Ultimatum

The Bourne Identity movies have been pretty good so far. Notice I didn’t say “great”. Don’t get me wrong, they’ve been pretty good, but when I left the theatre for both movies I felt a little let down… like they could have been much better.

Knowing that they could have been better has me excited at the news that Matt Damon has officially signed up and the wheels are in motion for the third installment – The Bourne Ultimatum. The good folks over at Moviehole give us this:

“We’ll probably do that in about a year and a half,” he says. “We’re all signed on in principle, in the sense that we’ve all agreed that we want to do it, but we’re not going to do it unless we have a great script. It’s ours to lose at the minute, and if we do make a third one, we want to make it as good as the first two. And if we can’t do that, then we’re going to have to let it drop.”

The character from the books, Carlos the Jackal, was taken out of the first film, and Damon says he won’t be in this one either. “Yeah, all that stuff with Carlos being actually caught. It’s kind of a Cold War story. We’re essentially retaining the title, so it’s going to be called ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. But we don’t know at this point what the hell that means! So if you have any ideas for a script, then please…”

Hmmm… maybe they’re not as far along as many people thought. But here’s somthing funny that struck me. If Damon has “signed up”, then he’s got no say anymore if they’re going to make the film no matter if it’s a good or bad script. Why do actors think they should have any creative control at all? Hmmm… there’s a topic for another post.

  1. the first movie was trult astounding , yet the second movie was a bit of a let down with hardly any knife-edge parts.Marie being killed off created a motive for him to go on the offensive but it destroyed a different side to the story, which wasn’t present for the rest of the movie.Bring her back…Many a bond movie or hollywood action movie has had returns that would compare to maries comeback as totally realistic.Bring her back and give the movie another dimension.

  2. De Ja Vous can take u back to where u want to be…..Great effort in both movies, funny how life is similar in that it sometimes doesn’t work out exactly as you plan it….It’s how u adapt to new challenges and changes that gives you invaluable experience and helps you to grow as a person…I thought Matt did a brilliant job acting as an agent in both films, he has matured as an actor beyond doubt with these films. Looking forward to Ultimatum with great expectation..

  3. Another reason to bring back Kirill for Ultimatum: He was one of the characters that made me like Supremacy over Identity. The car/foot chase scene at the end…I watch that one over and over…it was so GOOD! I actually almost got chills from that. I especially liked it when Bourne spared Kirill’s life…I’m a sucker for stuff like that, but it makes the movie so much more intense and meaninful, unlike the average action flick where the “hero” kills everyone in his way and doesn’t have any decency whatsoever to give people a chance. And I’m done rambling now, except to say that I don’t want them to bring Kirill back if they’re just going to kill him. It’s not worth it and it would be totally unrealistic.

  4. The Bourne Movies are the highest-quality action flicks I have ever seen and I am absolutely addicted to them; they are so awesome and they definitely need to bring back Kirill (Urban’s character) and NOT kill him because he is an awesome character and killing him off would be like cutting off an arm or a leg of the movie…you need a good bad guy to move the action along and they hit gold with his character. Plus, they ALWAYS kill off the “bad guys” in the movies and never give them a chance to come back and possibly be good as a result of the hero’s actions. That would be a really strong plot twist because it is something that would probably actually happen in real life. I definitely want to see him in this next one and I definitely think it would be a mistake to kill him. Same with Pamela Landy. Another really strong character that is a great asset to the film. Conklin was really good too, although it’s harder to bring him in in now that he’s a bit dead. I eagerly await The Bourne Ultimatum.

  5. In my opinion u hav something wrong with u if u don´t like these films matt damon is excellent in both, the story line is bothe clever and entertaining the fight scenes are fantastic and they together are probably some of the best films of the past ten years. Much more realistic than Bond and much cooler

  6. i think the moveis were GRATE! though it could have been better its very hrad to get a moive like that to perfection. matt is probliy a good actor for this movie but there are better but dont get me worg i think he was realy good.

Right know i am reading the books and i do think the moives could have been better but all u you how think this movie sucks FUCK U

  7. I’ pretty pessimstic about third Bourne-movie. Identity was one the best actiontrillers of 2000’s (telling very much about 21st centurys actiontrillers) and very enjoyable. I’d give it 4 out of 5.

But the second one wasn’t even nearly as good as first one. Start of the movie was great, lot’s of thinks happened, including one big surprise to the whole plot. But then, after the beginning, movie was pretty much over. Nothing very intrested didn’t take place in the rest of the movie and I can’t describe it as a “actiontriller”. It was more like “actionmovie without action”. It got it’s moments, but overall, it was boring. 2 / 5

About third movie. I don’t know is the book any greater than second one, but if it’s not, I don’t think they should try to make movie about it. Hollywood has ruined many great books, and will continue doing that. So how the heck should they be succesful with material that is at it’s best only “ok”. But, then again, if the book rules and is as good as first one, ok, let’s roll.

  8. I thought the movie sucked ass! Dude, what the hell do people see in this fake movie, and to Armine Kazaryan: GET A LIFE! Matt Damon is a C-list actor in my book, he is so meaty and unbelievable. Go back to BOSTON Matt! I hate to be the bad apple in this web page, but I’m just voicing my opinion. Matt Damon sucks and so do his movies!! But I do love Ben, and Gigli was Oscar worthy, I dont see why people made it sound so horrible.

Project Greenlight is another way for Matt to make some money, a reality show, How original Matt!

  9. MATT DAMON IS TRUELY A DEDICATED AND TALENTED ACTOR. BOTH “BOURNE” MOVIES WERE EXCELLENT. THEY WEREN’T JUST SOME FAKE “ACTION” MOVIE WITH SPECIAL STUNT PEOPLE MOST OF THE TIME. THE BOURNE IDENTITY WAS WONDERFUL AND I REALLY LIKE IT BECAUSE THE STORY ITSELF WAS BELIEVEABLE AND IT WAS SOMETHING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE.ALL THE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS MADE BOTH MOVIES EVEN MORE INTERESTING. THE SECOND MOVIE WAS EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST AND HOPEFULLY THE THIRD ONE WILL BE EVEN BETTER. MATT DAMON REALLY MADE THE MOVIE BELIEVABLE WITH ALL THE STUNTS THAT HE DID HIMSELF. I HEARD THAT MATT WENT TO THROUGH SPECIAL TRAINING TO LEARN ALL THE STUNTS, FIGHTING, AND EVEN HOW TO CLIMB A BUILDING FOR THE FIRST MOVIE.

I AM THE BIGGEST MATT DAMON FAN, AND I WAS WONDERING IF I CAN MEET MATT DAMON OR AT LEAST GO TO ONE OF THE PREMIERES OF ALL HIS NEW FILMS. I WILL REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!

  10. If his purpose in Act III of the Supremacy was to go to Moscow and confess to the Neski girl the ‘truth’ (remember, he doesn’t know that Marie’s assasin is in Moscow until they make eye contact in the chase), why doesn’t he go to Germany and confess to Marie’s family?

  11. In the third book–he goes back to America and tries to uncover the rest of his past life before becoming an assassin. He eventually uncovers too much and gets into pretty much the same situation in the first two books–having to kill everyone and clear himself at the end. I am sure they can make this just as good as the first two movies with the right actors playing the right characters.

  12. great news about a third 1 possibly being made. I love matt damon’s character jason bourne.
I think the first 1 really did it for me. I went and saw it at the movies becuase the other film i was going to see i was late for. I was completely blown away by it not having a clue of what i was about to see. since then ive read all three books.
The sequel(supremacy) however didnt do it for me, the fight scene with the treadstone assasin was nowhere near as good as the 1 in the first film,

the whole fight scene there looked a lot more sloppy, in the fist 1 u see damon brake the guys legs and arms for christ sake!here they fight with paper! Obviously trying to recreate bournes creativity with the PEN from the first one!

  13. My problem with books being adapted to film is that I expect at least an honest adaptation of it, but of course as we have been shown this can not be accomplished by all films, although a few did. I felt that Bourne Identity wasnt able to do that that was why I was disappointed with the first movie. When I watched the second film, I had NO expectations so I guess I liked it more, but saying that, I still found the shaky camera movement a bit annoying and other than that, I thought it was pretty good.

  14. i absolutly LUV matt damon and he should b in every movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is a really good actor and bourne identy and supremicy prove that as do his other movies like stuck on you, ocean 11 and oceans 12, the talented mr ripley, dogma and good will hunting and all his other movies! I LUV U MATT

  15. Hey guys, I’ve read all your postings, and I disagree, with what your saying. You all have the right to your opinion, but I think that the first Bourne was realy well done, plot wise, and cinematography wise, the second improved in my opinion, with the doco style filming, unconsidered style that is, suited it really well, it gave it a live intensity, and that fight with the last Treadstone assassin was really well choreographed especially to add the itensity of the horizontal blinds, it gave it realism and something to hang on the edge of your seat about. The third I believe, they will bring back Karl Urban’s charachter, as they gave him a short role on purpose to keep him in the dark, as he is a very dark characer, and we saw in Supremacy that he was still alive after that horrific accident, and I think Julia Stiles’ character will return, as I believe she has more to tell, and more to share into Bourne and her characters realtionship(professionally). And Pamela Landy I believe has a lot more to offer, I thought and still believe that Bourne and Landy might go into businesss together. And David Webb a.k.a Jason Bourne I believe has a lot more he still hasn’t told us, like the entire relationship between him and Conklin, like, he shut him down and all, but what about before his amnesia? did he know anything about the money in Conklins personal bank accounts? Did he know about Conklin’s plan’s? Did Nikki for that matter? Even though Ward Abbot is dead, there is a lot about him we don’t know, we might find out more about him like we did about Conklin in Supremacy. Don’t dispair guys I’m sure they will make this one good, and worth while to see. Thanks for reading my input, and I hope I’ve left you something to write about.

  16. i liked the first one, much more than the 2nd movie. i wanted to see more fighting. i wanted to see hand to hand combat from Damon and Karl Urban (i think that’s who it was), can’t really tell, he didn’t have to much screen time. i just found myself almost bored.

  17. Hm, I must disagree. I didn’t like the second movie at all. The first one was good, but the second one? Crap, in my opinion. I’m not going to see this one if it comes out… :)

    Just my $0.02

  18. Certainly, there is always room for improvement and there is no thing such as perfect thing.

But, those who know about movies and have a delicate taste must definately felt that both of the movies were at least a bit distinguished from most of the rest action flicks. Most of the actions scenes seemed a bit more realistic from the usual and for once I loved to see a ‘hero’ driving a normal car rather than a ferrari or something.

Come on people, you must admit that both of the movies seemed somehow a bit more closer to real life. It was not a sci-fi James Bond crap movie, that’s for sure.

John, I totally respect and love your website and read your news, but I would even love more if you got more involved with our responses to your comments.

Movieblog rocks, I really hope it stays like that and keep the ‘low-profile’ (really friendly) profile.

    Take care all.

  19. I actually watched both movies within weeks of each other and loved them both. Sure, there is always room for improvement, but really, where would you improve it? I had a hard time when pressed to put a finger on why or where it needed “reshaping”. Both films worked for me. I didn’t like the shaking camera and the tight shots, but the plot worked for me. What doesn’t work for me is trying to figure out who is left to be the bad guy in the third film. I mean, Julia Stiles’s character practically pee’d her pants when he trapped he in the subway station. Are you going to tell me she’s suddenly going to grow some grapes and come after Bourne? Pfft.

  20. Didnt Damon and Affleck won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Good Will Hunting” a couple of years ago? Then they also have this Greenlight Project for aspiring screenwriters, for somebody smart like Damon, he may even co-write for the next Bourne movie.

I was more impressed with the second Bourne film although the shaky movement of the camera didnt really appeal to me, apart from that I thought it was quite alright.
