Some thespians left (most of them) and some other staid to fight. It was about 900 more or less fighters who gave their life, against over 50000 persians.
Persian army had such a loss, that they gave up their quest. For the time!
There is also an ancient report, from a historian of that time, that an other fighter, fought by the side of those heroes. The name of him was Ehelteos. There are no more information about him, only his name!

There were about 7000 men in the Greek side, which consisted of 300 spartans and the rest of them all were a bunch of guys from different allied nations, but you already knew that. It’s also true that, most of them ran away (not the spartans, of course) from the bloody hell they got themselves into, but a few came back, about 1100 thebans and like 600 hundred guys from a different town, just to receive a glorious death besides the brave lacedaemonians and their great commander, Leonidas I, King of the little country called Sparta.
And as always, Holywood will ruin in some small way the history and the truth (and why not the fantasy already involved in the ancient story), but I hope all the rest will be as great as depicted in the previews.
