TwoFace Casting Rumours for Batman Dark Knight

By John Campea - October 9, 2006 - 11:35 America/Montreal

Last I posted about TwoFace casting rumours it was about Guy Pearce and personally I think he would be wonderful in the role. But now it seems that there is a raging debate over Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Phillippe.

IGN FlimForce says:

Two actors in particular have been rumored as the frontrunners during the last few weeks: Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Phillippe. Liev Schreiber and Guy Pearce have also been mentioned, but Gyllenhaal and Phillippe are the most hotly discussed.

After getting firm and official denials from both CAA and his reps at Management 360, IGN can shoot down the Gyllenhaal rumor. Gyllenhaal’s rep even quipped, “No, the other guy from Brokeback Mountain is in it if you haven’t heard.” That’s a reference to Heath Ledger being cast as The Joker.

A lot of other sites are crediting the “other Brokeback guy” angle as meaning that Gyllenhaal is being cast. Now I dont think this is a bad thing, but its entirely inaccurate. The statement was made to discourage the rumours around Jake.

But with EVERY camp denying their man is in the runnings, I have to wonder which one is bluffing? Or is it that NONE of these guys will be playing the future villian in the next movie. I guess time will tell.

I just hope Nolan maintains his creative feel that made the first one so good. i wasn’t particularly interested in seeing batman (the character) more than seeing how Bruce Wayne became batman. now thats it’s basically going to be entiely a batman movie i hope that they bring an element that focuses off a guy in a bat-suit

  2. At first I suspected that you didn’t cover the Ryan Phillippe angle, but as it turns out, there seems to be a video from IESB which has a brief interview with the actor. In it, he states while he would love to be in the film, the Dent talks are unfounded.

    Good call, Rod.

And I’m agreeing with you here: Heath Ledger was not in the rumor mill when he was officially anounced as The Joker. I expect the same from the Harvey Dent/Two Face suspects.

I think what happens is this:

    a) an actor is seen having lunch with one of the Nolan brothers;

    b) an actor would love to do the role but cannot due to other projects – [this is the most common that is ignored on the net, despite the truth of it, and that's also why some actors never hear of the rumors]

    c) They consider it but are not commited to it.

Right now, I’d start thinking in a Hitchcock mode. That is, cast against type. It seems to be the case with Ledger. The idea/rumor of Phillipe was in the right direction, because “we don’t see it”, but he’s an actor who had been underrated and nearly under the radar until ‘Crash’. I’m also looking forward to ‘Flags Of Our Fathers’, the new Eastwood film, and Eastwood makes any actor look good.

In other words, Nolan & co. are thinking out of the box.

    Let’s take out our scorecard!

Clive Owen= Still the best choice. But denies any knowledge of being contacted.

Guy Pearce= Possible, since he worked with Nolan on ‘Momento’, but the answer is no.

Josh Lucas= During promotions of ‘Posiedon’ it was reported he was interested. Months later such enthusiasm came to “That’s the first I heard about it”. No. Might like to work
with Bale again, so it was reasonable at the time.

Liev = The next best choice under Clive. No dice, let alone a scarred coin.

Jake= No, and I never believed this one for one iota anyway, if Joker scarred Harv’s face, then there’s the joke about jilted love…

No Ryan now- but the interview said there was no finished script yet, either. Is it possible that no one actor has been contacted because there may be no to little room for Dent? Maybe we hear his name, but he isn’t seen.

And then out walks Ashton Kutcher….

    PUNK’D!

None of these guys will be casted, like some of you have said when Heath was cast no one even meantioned him. It was all about people like Glover and Brody.

I have that feeling it will be someone we least expect. It will be someone with a big name, like how Nolan casted Freeman, Bale, Oldman and now Ledger.

My moneys on the hail mary from out of left field.

    …am I mixing sports metaphors there? I think I am. oh well…

20 bucks says its somebody that no one has even mentioned.

It seems to be the way things are going here lately.
    Heath Ledger.
    Robert Downey Jr.
2 choices that I would have never thought of but now that they have been chosen I am completely “on board” said choices.

I hope to be equally surprised and enthusiastic about the choice for Dent.
