Jude Law as General Zod

I put up a post a while ago that said:

1) I would love to see another Superman Movie

2) I’d love to see the bad guy as either Doomsday, or General Zod so that we can all kneel before him.

Pia sent me the heads up on this little tid bit that has me rather excited. The good folks over at Star Plus give us thie following:

Jude Law could be Superman’s arch enemy. The Alfie actor is in talks to appear as the Man of Steel’s most hated foe General Zod in the Superman Returns sequel. The role of General Zod was made famous by Terence Stamp, who played the character in 1980 movie Superman 2 – and producers see a resemblance between Stamp and Law.

A source told Daily Express newspaper: “Zod is going to be the main bad guy in the second film. Some say they should use an unknown but the director Bryan Singer is looking at Jude. The similarities between him and Stamp are clear.”

There seems to be a bunch or sources reporting this right now, and the whispers of a Jude Law General Zod have been floating around for a while. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves. A Superman Returns sequel hasn’t been 100% confirmed at this point (but make no mistake, there will be one), and these could all just be whispers… but I like what I’m hearing.

So sure, I love the idea of Law as Zod. Hell… I’m ready to kneel before him now… you know… in a totally hetrosexual way.

  2. I cant wait to see Zod back, will ursa and non also be in the next movie, i reckon they should just use those three actors again nothing a bit of make up cant fix. Ive waited so many years for this cant wait.

  3. Kilmer’s a fun idea but he’s not exactly very threatening any more. See him in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? He’s been eating.

I’m against the idea but if they insist on doing Zod then bring back Stamp. He’s still a scary man.

And seeing as he was thrown into a big bloody pit he might be looking a bit rough and old now anyway. He certainly wouldn’t come out of it looking like Jude Law! If they use Stamp again then they can make him into an incredibly angry old man who’s life was stolen away from him by Superman (in his view at least). Again though, this won’t attract any new fans to the franchise.

  4. When I said Val Kilmer, I meant the actors that appear in movies that I have in my DVD stash. However…

Superman kneeling before a former BATMAN does have some giggly appeal, no?

  5. A part of me is excited by the idea of there being General Zod and I think Jude Law would be great for it there’s another part of me that wants something original. We’ve already had Zod! I want Doomsday!

  6. Okay, so Zod’s powers were removed and he fell into a bottomless pit in the Fortress of Solitude. Now, 5+ years later, he somehow returns as a young metrosexual prettyboy and Superman’s greatest threat?

Absurd! Kneel before Jude Law? Maybe Bryan Singer dreams of it but I doubt most Superman fans will.

I’m sure he’s a fine actor but he is not ZOD. He’s too pretty.
Get someone older, darker, more manly and menacing. A guy who looks badass in a goatee. Get like Timothy Dalton or something. Val Kilmer? Hell yeah, I could see that.

No wait! You know what? Screw it! Don’t do ZOD again at all! Do Brainiac with a giant skullshaped spacecraft and giant robots that tear apart metropolis. Get Supes out in space for a bit. It’s a Sci-fi action movie starring Superman dammit and we got the CGI of the year 2007! Unlimited potential! GO ALL OUT!

Instead we get some effeminate pretty boys strutting around scowling at each other in wacky costumes? If this news is true then Singer is messing up another Superman movie.

  7. “Here’s my choice: Peter Weller.”

That’s pretty great, because then we’d finally get a Robocop Vs Superman flick, and then a lot of people would actually want to watch another Superman movie.

I didn’t see Superman Returns, because it didn’t look interesting. They’ve got to do something different to actually bring in people who aren’t Superman fans (and that doesn’t mean having a giant fucking spider.) I’m no Superman fan, but even I know this character’s got a rich history in comics and animated series that you can draw from. That’s what Batman Begins did, and that’s why a lot of people really dug it.

The clowns spending 250 million on these flicks shouldn’t jam themselves in to just following the Donner movies–if I wanted to watch those, I’d go to my local blockbuster.

  8. I gottta say, I’m with Alfie on this. Singer should be able to leave the first two films behind now and do his own thing. He should make Bryan Singer’s Superman, not Richard Donner’s Superman. There’s decades worth of great stories to mine material from, he doesn’t have to keep going back to the films. If he got over this need to emulate the Reeve movies then he could create something really original and memorable in the way that he did with the X-Men franchise at the time. I loved SR and I enjoyed the nostalgic aspect of it but he can’t rely on that forever.

  9. I agree with the above posters….for gods sake singer do something we haven’t seen….I wouldn’t be against this idea if returns hadn;t have been almost a remake of the first film but since you already copied one of those old films why not try and do something completely different…..there is more to the superman universe than the original films…

for fucks sake has he got chris rock lined to play a computer expert for the next one???

it isn’t a case of damned if you do damned if you don’t at all campea….there is a HUGE difference between keeping the spirit of the original films and just flat out copying them……the only thing he left out was a sense of humour, wonder and fun – he replaced it with a tone of depression and despair….

sure if he had gone the route of the silly tim burton version then yes people wopuld have complained but if he had come up with a good traditional superman story without just flat out copying the original people would have been fine with that.

the only original idea they bought to the new one was lois having a kid and superman having been gone…which I thought was dumb anyway…..all of that was just lame especially him having a kid…a kid that kills someone with no one mentioning it at all….goes against everything superman believes…he believes in never having to resort to that….anyway….

Warners would have announced the sequel already if they were happy with the films performance…this is obviously not an easy decision for them and they are not sure whether or not to go ahead…I hope they do as I really want to see a better films than the one we got which I did enjoy but I can see why it has failed to take off like spider-man….it was tied to much to the original films to be enjoyed completely as a stand alone film…it was really a film for fans..if you didn’t know much about superman (especially the donner films)I can totally see how you would have failed to make a connection with any of the main characters in this film as it required too much previous knowledge….he should have started again like batman begins…a fresh start…..but he made the film he wanted and unfortunately for what it cost and for what it was (the return of probably the most famous comic book character in history)it is being seen as one of the biggest disappointments of the year.
I fucking love the original films so I liked this movie but it could have been and should have been so much more…as for bringing back Zod, well, again he risks alienating a lot of people as it requires knowledge of a twenty year old film.

I just want something I haven’t seen before. we are not going to get doomsday as they have announced that animated superman vs doomsday movie for dvd next year so they won’t spoil a potentiasl movie storyline by releasing a cheap cartoon first….well I doubt they will….anyway if returns cost close to 300 mill can you imagine how much a doomsday film would cost???

has anyone seen the documentary about the history of superman singer made?? fantastic…got me excited to see this hollywoodland film…but if you like superman I suggest getting the doco….really cool….it will probably be an extra on the superman returns dvd but I couldn’t wait…

  10. Jude Law? I can see it.

Honestly though I doubt I’ll get that excited for a sequel. The appeal of SR was that he’d been gone for so long and the movie was NOTHING like the other superhero flicks. A sequel loses that uniqueness and, well, now it hasn’t been 30 or so years since the last Superman film. Still, Bryan Singer, I’m sure it’ll be good.

  11. While I like the idea of Law as Zod the problem I’m having with this is that WE SAW THIS ALREADY!!!

You know I was listening to another podcast where a poster mentioned how a lot of scenes in Superman Returns seemed like a rehash of scenes from the original 2 movies…and this just sounds like more of it. Why are we going back to Zod? We dealt with him already and he was sent back to the phantom zone, LET’S MOVE ON!!!!

I hope this news is just hersay and all rumor becuase it doesn’t sound very creative.

  12. What the FUCK is wrong with Bryan Singer??!??!?!?
Honestly, why the hell is he trying to “remake” or “keep similar” all these new superman movies??
In my opinion, Superman Returns, was just OK.
He needs to go and find his balls and make a Great SUperman Returns sequel WITHOUT trying to make it like the original boring-ass movies.
Please people, let me know what you think.
    Tony

  13. If it has to be Zod, then Jude Law is the best choice. Singer, I am directing this at you !!! ORIGINAL !!! STORYLINE !!! PLEASE !!!
Do not, I reapeat DO NOT, rehash he plot of Superman 2 the way you rehashed the plot of Superman: the movie. I swear , if rednecks, niagra fall or Superman putting the top back on the white house are anywhere near this film… ah, who am I kidding, I’ll still go see it but I wont be happy… yeah I will, but it wont be the movie I wanted it to be, just like Superman Returns wasnt the movie I wanted it to be. Good, but not great. Singer says he going all “Wrath of Khan” on this one so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he heard the complaints about the first one and he’ll bring his “X2” directors hat to Superman Returns 2.

  14. Hey John; sorry for the delayed reply, I read y’all through RSS and don’t get back to the website that often.

I did see “Road To Perdition” and thought that Law was perfectly fine, I’m just not seeing him as a General anything.
To me, the word General has certain connotations such as age, experience, battle weary, sneaky, brave, leader, and so on. I’m just thinking that Law is too young for such connotations in my mind.

    Here’s my choice: Peter Weller.

I’ll go see the movie irregardless, because I’m one of the few who actually really loved “Superman Returns” and absolutely hated the Reeve movies.

  15. I really don’t care if Jude Law is Zod or not.
If he plays ANY character in the film (even Bizarro) it would be fine by me.

*I thought Jude Law was GREAT in the underrated “Enemy At The Gates”.

    * I thought he was brilliant in “Gattaca”

    * I liked him in “Road To Perdition”

    * I thought he was great in “eXisTenZ”

When you look at your DVD and video collection, you can always tell who your favorite actors and filmmakers are. That’s how I look at it.

(Note: Val Kilmer beats Jude Law 2-1)

  16. Hey Jay,

It’s a “Fucked if you do, Fucked if you don’t” situation. If Singer had gone off in a different direction people would have cried and complained that he wasn’t sticking with the Christopher Reeves versions… if he does, then people accuse him of sticking too close.

Besides all of that… people like me WANT to see ZOD. He has easily been the best and most interesting character in ANY Superman incarnation (in film, TV, anything) in my opinion… and I’d love to see them re-visit him very much.

  17. Hey Henrik,

Not true. I’ve heard that rumor float around too. Singer denied it.

It would in fact be the height of stupidity to change an entire story just because you couldn’t get one particular actor to play one particular role.

However… i did hear that Singer wanted Law as the man of steel once.

  18. Bryan Singer wanted Jude Law to play Zod in Superman Returns. When he declined several times, they decided to write Zod out of the script.

I read it on imdb.com trivia page, so don’t know how reliable it is.

  19. Jude Law wasn’t commanding or frightening in Road To Perdition, he was a grubby, ratty little man – not Zod-like at all.

If you have to have a Zod (Christ, do we have to have a Zod?), and an English Zod at that, they should use that English guy from the third series of 24.

Jude Law should be cast only as Beppo The Supermonkey or Lois Lane.

  20. Jude Law could make a fine Zod.

I personally would prefer a new face for the General. I like fresh starts. It can give a struggling actor a chance on the big screen.

  21. I can understand there are some doubts about this. But, I have no problem with this. I’d like to see Jude become the General.

    KNEEL BEFORE ZOD, motherfuckers!

  22. Hey William…

Did you even see “Road to Perdition”? Law is almost 35 years old with over 30 films to his credit and considered by most (although this is subjective) to be one hell of an actor.

I think he’s a great choice…. and for those who are into the “look” of a character… he does look a lot like Stamp at that age.

Out of curiosity though… aside from Law… who could you see in that role? Not many jump to my mind so I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts.

    Cheers!

  23. Jude Law?
    General Zod?

    Somehow, I’m not seeing it.

Terrence Stamp could bring the fear and bring the terror with just one withering glance.
I doubt that Jude Law could bring the fear and/or terror even if he had a fear and terrorizing machine at his disposal.

Maybe if he was Private Zod, or even Fresh Faced Lieutenant Zod, yeah. Maybe.

Memo to Bryan Singer: Go older, go more experienced. In an entirely heterosexual sort of way.
