I’ve enjoyed the first 2 Bourne films (The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy). I haven’t LOVED them, but put together they’ve made more money than the two most successful Bond films. Interesting.
Hollywood is never willing to walk away from a money maker, so just because The Bourne Ultimatum is the last of the books, doesn’t mean it’ll be the last of the movies. As a matter of fact, they’re already talking about 5 in total. The good folks over at Empire give us this:
Bourne producer Frank Marshall told MTV that the series may stretch to “maybe five films…At some point he’s gotta find out who he is”. But ultimately the decision is “up to Matt Damon”. Writers are currently working on potential plotlines.
Why not? If a film franchise is working, making money and is of pretty decent quality, I don’t see any reason not to continue with it. The question is… does Matt Damon think the same?
As it happens the success of the original Bourne movie got the publishers/Ludlum family to award the rights to write a fourth Bourne book to another auther – Eric von. Lustbader.
That said, I’d agree with the poster above, theres no way that the film franchise can make use of the new material as the fourth book follows on faithfully from the first three books where as the films have completely deviated.
Where’s the shaky-cam rant? Or the concern that they’ll reveal that Bourne is gay? Something’s not right on the movie blog today…
It doesn’t matter if they make more movies than there was books written. The only part of the books that are in the movies are the characters names and the book titles. The made for t.v. movie in the eighties called the bourne identity fallowed the book story line better.
I would like to see more movies. This could be american version of
James Bond.
I wouldn’t mind if this had a few more movies squeezed out of it. But Matt Damon might start getting long in the teeth. I can see a younger Matt Damon like actor taking over.

Well, I do have to say that the previous Bourne films were excellent. They were believable in a way that most of the James Bond films could never be, and as of late, have tried not to be. I realize the M.O. for Hollywood these days is to find a moneymaker film franchise, then squeeze every last cent out of it. (See Jason X, you know, where Jason goes to space..) In most instances you can chalk that up to laziness in terms of not trying very hard to come up with new ideas.
However, as long as the follow up films are of the same quality as the first two have been then I don’t have a problem with other sequels being produced. I don’t even have a problem with Matt Damon retiring form the Bourne role at some point if he decides to. I think the character of Jason Bourne is strong enough that it could survive a new actor taking over the role.
In the end, it might not matter anyway as the article states it’s pretty much up to Damon as to whether or not the third film will be the last one.
Nice to see the bourne identity sells for less than $12 now. I thought it was a great movie
