Sook-Yin Lee stars in highly sexual movie Shortbus

shortbus.jpgSook-Yin Lee, former Much Music Vee-Jay and CBC radio host of Definitely Not the Opera is taking a step on the wilder side with her new role in Shortbus. Shortbus is a story about a group of New Yorkers caught up in their romantic-sexual milieu converge at an underground salon infamous for its blend of art, music, politics, and carnality. Lee plays a sex therapist who has never had an orgasm. You can see the uncensored video here but be warned there is nudity and sexual content in the trailer.

This movie looks like a good taste of something different, like a piece of mango tossed into an apple pie, and yeah some people might pucker their mouth at the thought but will probably be delighted by the actual flavor.

I used to work at a movie theater and it was my secret pleasure to recommend movies like this one to little old ladies or couples in their mid-forties (my favorite was getting a minister and his wife to see Transamerica,”it’s a disfunctional family road trip movie with a twist”).

I am really looking forward to Shortbus. I love Sook-Yin Lee as a radio personality and besides the trailer looking great there is also the factor of the director: John Cameron Mitchell, who you may remember directed, wrote and starred in the cult classic musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a spectacular alternative indi film.

I just love getting a peek into unusual (but real) worlds that I am have no access to in my everyday life. Films like Hedvig and Transamerica, or documentaries like Rize or Vernon, Florida are great for that sort of thing. This movie looks like another step away from the ordinary and into the extraordinary.

  2. If Cameron Mitchell wanted to make a movie about individuals who can’t find love, can’t express themselves, or are deeply and emotionally scarred he could so easily do so without the hardcore sex. When reading reviews of this film most have said that since the sex is not erotic and since the movie has something meaningful to say then it is not porn. Well lots of porn is not erotic and claims to have some hidden meaning. Shortbus, regardless of whether it has a message or not, is a porn, and if you like that stuff you may like this movie. This movie coould have made its point without the sex which is added for nothing else than shock value and to draw attention in hope of garnering more viewers. I know there are people who actually indulge in this lifestyle and many of these people get STDs, including AIDS. If this film wanted to be honest, it would have skipped the sex and Mitchell would have had one of the characters have HIV or some other std because that is the reality for people who mimick the lifestyle these characters do. Mitchell has said that Hollywood “cheapens sex” by throwing it there in a gartuitous manner. I agree, but he has done the same. If Mitchell’s vision of the future of adult cinema is Shortbus, and if more directors begin adding real sex, which seems to be happening lately, then legitimate actors have to start competing with pornstars. So far, however, those actors willing to degrade themselves have been untalented amateurs or minor hollywood figures looking for more “exposure,” like Chloe Sevigny and Vincent Gallo. The unfortunate thing is, however, that as sex becomes more prevalent in legitimate movies, and perhaps theater, then we’ll have kids growing up thinking the way to be heard in the industry is to be a whore.

  3. ifilms sucks hard with their damn website. it use to be better without all this pop up window crap. i hope this trailer is somewhere else so i can watch it. two browser crashes so far thanks to ifilm.

  4. When I was invited to an early screening of this in London I decided not to find out anything about it beforehand. I mean, how often do we get the chance to see a movie we know absolutely nothing about? I’m a big fan of action films and I like a good political thriller, so I was hoping for one of those. … Boy oh boy. This film makes the porn I’ve seen seem like Last Of The Summer Wine.

  5. I don’t really like the arty movies that put real sex in there. However, I have heard some very, VERY good things about Shortbus. I might check it out if it ever gets released over here.

  6. Seems like a waste. If you want porn, watch porn. If you want an engaging story, something tells me this movie won’t have it, but since I haven’t seen it, time will be the judge of that.

  7. It looks like a porn film to me but then again I really don’t much about the movie. I read a review by James Berardinelli and it wasn’t a favorable review of the movie. He said that the characters were unintresting and the plot was very thin so I dont know if this movie is even worth seeing….unless you want to see people actually having sex.

  8. i was lucky enough to catch this amazing film during TIFF and i can admit i was looking forward to some raunchy, raw and graphic sex but it becomes so natural as you’re engaged with the characters and their stories that i left the movie with the sexuality not even being on my mind.

The relationships and the characters take the story so far above that, thinking back, it would not feel natural if the sex was simulated or watered down.
