Dreamgirls apologies to Motown

By Sharon - February 23, 2007 - 01:20 America/Montreal

dreamgirls.jpgAfter accusations of historical distortion of Motown the feature film and maker of many an Oscar nominee Dreamgirls has publiclly apologised. The good people over at yahoo.com give us more on the story:

Responding to complaints that the movie musical “Dreamgirls” distorted the history of Motown, makers of the Oscar-nominated film said in newspaper ads on Wednesday that the picture was a work of fiction and apologized for any confusion with the legendary record label. The full-page advertisements paid for by DreamWorks Pictures were published on Wednesday in Hollywood’s two major trade papers — Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

Well that is good. It should also be noted that Dreamworks did both of these adds a day after the Academy Awards votes were in. It was specifically done so that their apology would not sway voters into thinking badly about the film. I wonder though, does this make it any less sincere?

The people of Motown are happy now, there have been many grumbling about the way they was portrayed in the movie and now Dreamgirls has publicly apologized for anything offensive in the film. Everyone is forgiven.

I wonder if the Academy voters would have actually respected Dreamgirls more for admitting fault. I do, if anything if I were a voter I would feel more positively about the film. But that’s just me.

I guess the people over at Dreamworks didn’t want to take any more chances with their nominees since they didn’t get a best picture nomination.

I think posting the apology AFTER the voting makes it more sincere. This way no one can say they put up the apology to clear the air for the PURPOSE of swaying votes.

They let the movie be voted as it was, with whatever perceptions the voters wished to hold. If they felt this movie damages the Motown rep, and choose to vote against it on that premise, they can. If the apology came before the vote, some may think it wasn’t sincere, and that it was just a ploy for votes.

They should apologize for a movie that didn’t live up to the hype:)

I am glad to know that Dreamworks did actually apologize to Motown for the movie. Even though I enjoyed the movie I had the opportunity to see both the play and the movie and I must say I was really dissapointed to see how deliberate that the filmakers were in turning this wonderful stage play into a Motown movie. Don’t get me wrong I am a huge fan of Motown and know many facts about the company and it was really evident that what they added to the movie was taken directly from Motown and gave everyone that impression what record company they were referring to without saying. By them apologizing also acknowledges the fact that they knew what they were doing when they made the movie.
