Indiana Jones 4 Plot Revealed
Once we finally accepted that Indiana Jones 4 was going to happen the speculation over the plot began. Inevitably the “passing of the torch” thing came up with the inclusion of Jones son, as well as putting the movie closer to the 50s as so much time has gone by.
Now SlashFilm has a lead on the plot and it raises some concern.
According to a scooper named Belloq, the opening action scene of the film will pit Dr. Jones against Russians agents in Area 51. Area 51?! The disbanded Frank Darabont draft had a similar opening and involved Indiana and Aliens from outer space.=
But wait, there is more – Shia LaBeouf’s character is a leather jacket and jean wearing, motorcycle riding greaser. This can;t be true, Can it? And it gets even worse (although I didn’t believe it could be possible. According to the scooper “Indy and Shia will be thrown together in this adventure but will not learn they’re related until a pivotal action scene.”
Now to have Indiana fighting against Aliens is mostly implied here. The scooper states that he is fighting Russians AT Area51.
Alien Conspiracy is often discarded as saying the top secret military base is a testing ground for secret technologies, not aliens. Perhaps Indy will be discovering this first hand. Its the Nazi’s that he is throwing down with here.
But honestly, would aliens be so bad? We can accept the Ark of the Covenant can melt Nazis, and cultists with human sacrifices over Sacred stones, and the very Holy Grail itself can exist, but aliens is just unreal?
As for Jones’ son, played by Shia, I can really see him dressed up in that style, which will ground the time frame nicely with the pop culture reference. I also like that Jones will not be aware that this new character is his son until a really inopportune moment.

The ark melting Nazis made sense in the context of the film. All the previous films leaned on what Dr Jones does: archaeology. that doesn’t work with aliens.
Maybe Indy prevents the Stargate from being stolen from the Russians ;)
oops I meant BY the Russians.
I agree with Zac. It’s got nothing to do with how believable aliens are. Archaeology deals with ancient cultures and religions. Aliens do not fit into the Indiana Jones universe.
I hereby pledge that I will not give George Lucas any more of my money unless he delivers quality. I will wait and watch his stuff on TV or at a frinds place but I will not buy, rent or pay for a ticket to a theatre.
I agree with you Rodne about the other movies. If we can bleieve the Ark thing, hte sacrifice thing and the Holy Grail thing can’t we accept aliens? And does this now mean that they ARE using Frank Darabont’s script that Lucas said he didn’t like?
playin devils advocate out of blind hope. could the huge warehouse at the end of raiders be area 51 and the sequence be like the other films openings. indy trying to retrieve something taken from him perhaps not the ark itself but somthing .
Dublin,
I think that may be wishful thinking on your part:P Personally I don’t think they will touch on any of the storylines from the other movies. Maybe reference stuff but won’t actually go back into that storyline and personally I wouldn’t want them to either. I say move on with a completely new storyline and just see where they go with it.
And as a side note about the bit at the end of Raiders with the warehouse, just a question – why would they send the Ark to be kept at Area 51? A place where, if whoever wants to retrieve the Ark, is a likely place for it to be, a suspicious place.
Area 51 is a suspicious place now but it was not then.
I think archeology and aliens play together nicely, just like in Stargate or The 5th Element ;-)
“I also like that Jones will not be aware that this new character is his son until a really inopportune moment.” …not that this movie doesn’t seem designed to spoil itself from the get go… but…
anyways, i agree. aliens would be interesting. it would be neat to see Dr. Henry Jones go off into space with these benevolent nazi vanquishing aliens, to study them for all eternity. if sean connery doesn’t want to reprise his role, perhaps wilford brimley could do it.
As to the usage of the Darabont script: why the confusion? It isn’t unusual for writers to be jerked around for X amount of time, leave for whatever reason, then replaced by other writers who then of course, also get jerked around.
Slashfilm says “it gets worse”…
I have a bone to pick here with Slashfilm and those that support thier cheap shots. Was the story leaked or the script? Did they read the script? Yes, Darabont was given hell, as were those who came before him. The only real concern is that Lucas still wants Connery to reprise his role and if Sir Sean wants to do it or not.
There’s also other things to keep in mind. One, just because a story is set at Area 51 does not automatically mean it will involve UFO’s and/or alien remains. It may be Russian technology and/or the start of the Cold War. Two, it is a huge stretch to have mysticism revolving around both religious artifacts (I and III) and the Thugee cult (II) and then aliens from outer space. Finally, the “greaserbiker” suggests mid 50’s. This would make some sense if Indy is a little older by at least twenty years. What’s so wrong with that?
Whats wrong with that…….. >.>
Indiana and Aliens is just plain WRONG!
Nazi’s, religion, anchient races is what Indie is.
It has nothing to do with aliens being ‘to far fetched’ it just that the thought of the two is like mixing ice-cream with meatloaf – they just dont go.
If it is aliens, I will be waiting for TV showing before I bother with it.
Aliens could work if its used in the context of ancient cultures.
Many poeple believe that the Egyptians, Mayans and even the Jews wrote or drew about aliens in some capacity.
I could see a plot where Indy thinks hes on the trail of some acient civilizations secret and somehow aliens tie into the story.
It doesnt mean we will actuall SEE aliens (which I think would be bad) but they could be inferred.
I have read many books on the ‘ancient astronaut’ theory, and in fact, some of them suggested that the Ark of the Covenant itself is a piece of alien technology. Aliens and Indy will not be a problem with me personally…just don’t go overboard and show the aliens and give us a hint that we may have been visited in the past.
I’m not even close to worried about Indy possibly dealing with aliens at all. Everyone talks about Indy’s age, possible plots and Lucas but lost in the discussion is that there is still a pretty damn good director watching over all of this. Yeah, Spielberg did ruin War of the Worlds with one of the worst endings I’ve ever seen, but he’s still one of the best cinema has – or ever has had – if you look at his total body of work.
The ONLY thing I’m worried about is that – and correct me if I’m wrong and missed the memo – Connery isn’t completely signed on to do the project. The only thing I feel that could completely sink it would be having to do a complete re-write to fill in for such a major character. Aliens? Well, it’s outlandish but not THAT much more than finding both the ark of the covenant and the holy grail within a matter of two years (Raiders was in ‘36 and Crusade ‘38).
Hey if Rowdy Roddy Piper can do why not Indy?
Beachbum. What????
I for one don’t have any problem with Indy 4 involving aliens. If done well, it could be awesome.
As someone else mentioned, there is speculation out there that aliens gave humanity a “boost” by providing technology to ancient cultures…there’s a semi-famous book about this called “Chariots of the Gods.” One rumor says this book was a source of inspiration for the screenplay.
So there could be a plausible link in the film between ancient cultures and Indy’s archaeology stuff–which just happens to throw aliens into the mix.
All right, but honestly… how bad will it be if this sucks. Harrison Ford is still great, and Marion (Karen Allen) still looks like a spunky irish gal… though clearly a little older, I wish they had done this movie ust % years ago.. a girl can hold up well, but when she’s doing such a good job why waste and wait forever? Same gos for Indy…. All and all, I don’t TRUST lucas anymore, making bad or mediocure STARWARS films, siting “The Blob” as a source of inspiration. As a kid, in nueturd, politically correct world (without a father) Indy was my guide for what a guy should be…. smart, tough, with a zest for life, a soft spot for pretty girls and little kids… often modest, well rounded, respectful, but with a clear definition of self that didn’t take shit. If I’d looked at my dad, I’d have been in trouble….
Naturally, I’m a little worried about the whole Aztec Zombie thing….. the other movies were religious based (aside from temple of doom, which was basically good if you were 12, or drunk…. and even that revolved around a cult with minimalistic suspension of belief) All in all, I like to believe what Indy writes on the chalk board back in 1936, that archeology is the search for FACT… and then find a few magic suprises, with emphasis being on the bible and Arthur and the whole western myth, instead of mixing ideaologies and asking Indy loving audiences wait 18 years just to endure this Aztec Zombie crap…..
Shia Labuff or whoever he is a flesh faced little jew pupp, who seems to have ripped his ENTIRE style off Brando…. and I don’t think the mustache will help….. but maybe he’ll be all right. Though honestly, I can’t see him as Indy (or Marian’s) some, since he lacks that spark and flame in the eye that make the two such a match.,, that which made SPEILBURG orginally bring them together. All in all, this movie will suffer (more then likely) from being too fast paced, with backgroud people looking like period extras instead of real people, shots being dependent on blue screen digital back drops (you couldn’t find a real jungle? A real 40’s Hanger?) and ultimently moving too quickly in scenes with huge budgets and no heart (save Harrison and Marian), without drawing you in, or making the film seem real…. grainy, sweaty, down to earth real, like Raiders…. two old men TRYING to make a Indy Movie, with all the money in the world… I’m afraid that the Film will wind up like KONG or even Captain what’s (Jude Law) his face in THE LAND OF TOMARROW. LIke “look! It’s Indiana Jones!” Only, it won’t be… Just people trying too hard, and forgetting what made Indy great in the first place!
