Shrek the Fourth? – Prequel
As if we didn’t suspect Shrek the Third to dominate the boxoffice, but did you think we would find enough to talk about this three posts in a row? Well this is more about the future of Shrek and some of the contradicting thoughts floating around about the franchise.
According to sources, DreamWorks chief Jeffrey Katzenberg wants “Shrek 4″ to be an “origin story,” a desire that goes a long way towards explaining why Jeffrey Katzenberg isn’t a screenwriter. “Katzenberg insists he always envisioned four chapters in the Shrek tale, and No. 4 will explore the green ogre’s origins,” is what we’re being told
So one of the big wigs at Dreamworks has his own vision for the movie, who also happens NOT to be a writer and then caps off this less popular direction with an assumption that he hoped there would only be four movies?
Its easy to say “I wanted four all along” when you have three under your belt. George Lucas originally wrote Star Wars to be 27 chapters too. Things change.
Are we to believe that he really had 4 movies worth of storyline picked out? And that a prequel was always there from the beginning to bookend the epic?
I don’t know. This sounds to me like some fluff. I think a prequel story is just a bad idea. The supporting cast that have been the staple of this franchise would have to be absent, and can this movie really carry itself before the turning point in Shrek’s life that makes him want to leave the grumpy solitude of his swamp?
I don’t think there even SHOULD be another, but you know Hollywood – if it sells, we get more. But to handicap yourself with an origin story just seems like direct to dvd to me.

i haven’t seen Shrek 3 yet, but since Shrek 1 they had in mind 4 movies, and the fourth one (as you said) explains Shrek’s origins and why he ended up in the swamp.
If the masses want Shrek 4, they will get Shrek 4.
But if they get “this”….
Yeah. I know the truth! See, Rodney, it goes like this….when there are characters like The Muppts, suddenly we get The Muppet Babies. We get childhood memories of Bugs Bunny and Wile E Coyote turned into shrunken versions of themselves…
So…we need BABY SHREK to sell plush toys to our kids, nieces and nephews!
Get with the program!
:)
Yeah, people only *wish* I’m kidding.
Because that’s the only reason for a prequel.
Unless the character is Puss N Boots.
Why is it every time someone announces a sequel they always start talking about prequels?
I took my son to see the movie over the weekend. My son loved it! I just had a very big problem of the way we portray homosexuality. It was not called for to have a man dressed as a woman. And my son question me why he had a mans voice. That was very disturbing!! As if we need to corrupt our kids anymore than they already are. This is a kids movie!!I understand we are living in a different day from when I grew up, but my goodness that was not called for at all!!
I cant think f a character who Im less curious to see the origins of. A once great Jedi who turns to the darkside and is horribly scarred, yes. A troll in a swamp, oh wow what interesting events caused this. Seriously its just going to be terrible.
You’re obviously (I’m assuming) new to the series, Shannon. That character was one of the ugly stepsisters, not a man. It’s a joke. It has nothing to do with homosexuality at all. It’s just a very ugly (manly) woman that happens to have the voice of Larry King.
BTW, why did you take your kid to see this movie if you and he (I’m assuming) haven’t seen the other films? I’m always curious to know why that happens…my friend who’s a girl went and saw Clerks 2 and she had no idea what Clerks 1 was. Nor Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back. Nor any of Kevin’s other films.
Shannon, I have to agree with Jarek here. The “Ugly stepsister” stereotype was made more funny by making her SO ugly and giving her a man’s voice. There was nothing appealing about her. Truly the loathsome ugly step sister of fairytale quality, just like all the other fairytale characters.
Furthermore, Bugs Bunny was cross dressing long before Shrek was even considered for a movie. Just sayin.
Even if it was a gay man… thats hardly “corruption”
conservative much?
