Fishburne To Direct The Alchemist
Laurence Fishburne master thespian has decided to transform the best selling book “The Alchemist” into a feature film. We get the scoop from the fabled caves of Yahoo:
The “Matrix” actor teamed up with A-Mark Entertainment, an independent finance and production company, to buy the film rights from Warner Bros. He will direct from his own adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s philosophical book about a traveler journeying the world during the Inquisition in order to find man’s purpose in the world.
The filmmakers’ take is described as “Harry Potter meets Indiana Jones,” with a sweeping adventure centering on a young Spaniard who embarks on a quest to find a hidden treasure within the Egyptian pyramids and ends up discovering a personal treasure that eclipses his wildest expectations.
I wish I read this book so I would be able to give more thoughtful commentary on this news. I have began to read more lately, and I am happy about this. I am currently reading God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, but this does not help us when discussing the Alchemist.
I will say that any movie that has a combination of sorcery and archaeology is god in my books. The fact that the Fishburne threw in his own money to get the rights is something to take note of. He must believe in the story if he is willing to put up cold hard cashola. I have said before that people that love what they do; do it best. I hope the enthusiasm Mr. Fishburne has for this film translates into a glorious and epic tale.

Why won’t anyone make a movie about Piers Anthonys book ‘On a Pale Horse’ Its about a 24ish kid taking over the role or ‘Office’ of “Death, the Grim Reaper” – fucking awsome book! Really great twists and turns, any one that can should check it out.
Doug – Sorry to ruin your day, but the Alchemist isn’t really about sorcery and archaeology, they’re spinning in to sound exciting. It’s a good book – great book – but sadly, the theme is soley about following your dreams and self discovery. “Harry Potter meets Indiana Jones” is a horrible explanation. I would more say “MYST meets Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken” The novel smacks you in the face with a heavy hand (regarding the theme), and is dripping with thick overtones of God, love, fate and free will.
Still, a good book. Sadly, there’s no doubt this one will be shelled out, using the carcass to stand on, and leave the soul behind.
Thank you very much for the clarification Tim.
your thoughts are appreciated!
I was wondering why nobody had this idea before? this is a great book and it should be turned into a movie.
Read the book twice in the last week. It’s incredible. And I wouldn’t necessarily say there isn’t a touch of sorcery. I would make the arguement that its almost like throwing the wisdom and teachings from star wars jedi about how the universe(force) works in a more Arabic folklore/ islamic christian way. But yes the general idea is to discover one’s reason for being, or what the book calls, one’s “Personal Legend”.
