Lucas is a story-teller and somebody who has a clear vision. What’s more he retains it throughout production and is exceptional at communicating his vision to a bunch of clearly talented artists and fellow film makers.
I admire Lucas greatly and thank him for creating Star Wars. A story that kick started and continues to fire my imagination to this day.

Spielberg knows where to point the camera and how best to translate the story in to something we all want to watch.
He is Jimmy Page to Lucas’ Robert Plant. Plant may well play the guitar but he’s not a patch on his band mate!

That said, go back and look at the original Star Wars.
The distant landscapes on Tatooine are David Lean. The princess/boy hero/Jedi/sword weilding is Kurosawa. The gritty clientel, rugged if slightly mysterious hero and bar stand off of Mos Eisley are Sergio Leone. The intense and moving soundtrack is Morricone courtesy of John Williams.

Say what you like about saturday morning matinees and Flash Gordon. Lucas took his lead from the best of cinema.

In the same way that I’d like to see Tsukamoto direct the original Alien story, I’d love to see the three afore mentioned legends direct Star Wars.
