Kevin Spacey Is Back As Lex Luthor

There are a few people out there who actually liked Superman Returns. I’m one of them. As a matter of fact I loved the movie. No, it wasn’t your traditional Super-Hero film, but that was part of its strength to me. Was it a great comic book movie? No. Was is a great MOVIE? Yes it was. And I take a lot of heat for saying this…. but I even think Brandon Routh was a better Superman than Christopher Reeves (Ducking from lightning and pop bottles).

Anyway, as most of you already know, the next installment of Superman is on its way and will probably be titled “The Man of Steel”. Bryan Singer is indeed back to direct and promises to be a more action oriented Superman movie this time around.

One of the best parts of Superman Returns to me was Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, it it looks ike Spacey has confirmed that he indeed will be back. Our friends over at Moviesonline give us this:

Kevin Spacey will be returning as Lex Luthor in the upcoming SuperMan Returns Sequel according to variety. This is great news for fans of his and the Superman Movie. He really was a great Lex!

So there you have it. Spacey is back. I can only hope that this time he’s not scheming some sort of massive real estate crime again. Even I have to admit that’s getting a little tired.

You can skip to the end and leave a response.

Yay!!! Maybe his big scheme will be to trick Supes into paying child support! Oh JOY!!!!!!!!!!!

So i guess we’re getting the two villains thing again. I’m 95% sure the supervillain of the next movie is going to be Brainiac so i just hope they don’t use any of Tim Burton’s ideas.

    ‘Luthiac’ anyone?

  3. i hope his role is minimal. not that i hate spacey or luthor, but i would love to see another enemy other than him, someone new.

  4. Can’t we have just one Superman movie without Luther?! I liked Spacey and all, but Superman has quite the extensive rogues gallery that has been all but neglected in the films.

Just imagine all the Batman flicks having The Joker as the villian. Each and every one. He’s a great character, but he loses his impact if you see too much of him.

I don’t mind Luther being back, nor do I mind Spacey playing him. However, please, dear God please, don’t have Parker Posey in the movie. She’s not a good actress, nor is she eye candy.

No real shock there. Spacey and Singer are buddies off camera. Plus he said back in January on THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN that he was going to appear in THE MAN OF STEEL.

As for the RETURNS, I don’t get it. I’m with John; L-O-V-E-D the film and think Routh is the best Superman…period. But it reminds me of X-MENs reaction back in 2000. Although mostly positive, they were those very loud-voices who bitched about the altered costumes, lack of action and more attempt to build a geniune story around these characters instead of simply throwing millions of $$$s towards CGI-filled set-pieces. Do any of those complaints sounds familiar?

If that’s the case, then said bitches could be won over by THE MAN OF STEEL this coming Summer 2009; considering that Singer is going “WRATH OF KHAN on it” and the last time he did that he gave the world X2: X-MEN UNITED…

I hope we get corprate Lex from modern Superman mythology.

I’m not quite sure why people love or even like this Superman Film…It’s like watching an updated Superman the movie…with really cliche’ and trite plot points like the boy and new boyfriend. They’re not twists as so much as really bad twists, with no sense of originality.

Routh was good, I admit, but not better, but a slightly different version of Reeve. And Kate Bosworth was useless as Lois Lane.

Spacey was cast perfect as LEX, but constantly using Lex as the main villain is getting rather tedious and somewhat boring.

They really need a new take on Supes…not something as superficial as a new costume or new cliche’ ideas…something fresh and unique.

Even though there are people who liked, there were more people who really did not like. And let’s not forget, Superman returns did not fly to $200 million, but crawled!

P.S. If people want to see a real reinvention of the Superman Character…they should read the John Bryne orgin that was written in the nineties which has been the new template people are still using in the comic books today. Now that was a new and interesting take…those ideas by the way are in Smallville and all the Superman comics today. Byrne’s take on Supes blows away Singers ideas any time of the day!

    @Kneon

They have to have Lex I believe, because he is the only Superman villain that the general public knows. My mother doesn’t read the comics, but she knows who Lex Luthor is. Maybe the studios are concerned that having some random villain would diminish box office. People came out en masse in hopes of seeing Venom in Spiderman 3 due to his popularity. People wouldn’t be lined up around the block to see me as Superman’s villain, even if I am a badass:)

Superman’s rogue gallery has gotten a major upgrade. For some time alot of people have considered it kinda weak, but if you look at it he does have some impressive foes:

    Gog – Major bad ass.

Zod – Nicely done in For Tomorrow.

    Ruin – Rucka’s bad boy

Besides those you have the classics: Luthor(done), Darkseid, Brainiac, Metallo, Bizarro, Silver Banshee, Doomsday, etc.

It seems Bryan Singer is not comfortable of attempting to try something new.

Bring on DOOMSDAY! Hey, I LOVE Kevin Spacey in everything he has done including Lex, but like others have said, seeing the same villan over and over is wrong – include him yes, but bring in some hurtin’…

  13. Lawrence says:

I am slow here but have people spotted the parallels between the superman titles and the batman movie titles.
    Batman Begins = Superman returns
The dark Knight = The man of Steel

If this does head to a crossover film, or an avengers film then superman needs to get darker. Otherwise they won’t fit together
