I am hoping for a scenario like the two parter Menagerie where Spock does his best to save Kirk from his fate in Generations. Spock could use the Guardian from City On the Edge of Forever to go back in time and disrupt the time flow slightly so that Kirk does not end up in the Nexus.

By creating an alternate time line JJ and the boys neatly sidestep the continuity conumdrum and set the stage for a new set of adventures.

I have come up with one possibly explanation as to why Nimoy is in it and Shatner isn’t: Nimoy might possibly be playing Sarek (Spock’s father). It would make sense, and I think it’d be a great gesture to the fans.
