‘Disturbia’ teams reunites for ‘Y The Last Man’

Dj-caruso.jpgLooks like there’s another comic book turned movie project in the works. MTV news got to speak to the talented director, D.J. Caruso about his upcoming adaptation to the popular comic, Y The Last Man.

Latino Review gives us this:

“Y” is reaching its 60th issue, but Caruso and “Disturbia” screenwriter Carl Ellsworth are distilling the movie version to focus on the first 12 issues, “sort of combining them into a beginning, middle and end,” Caruso said. “The problem is that even in the first 12, there is so much great stuff, it’s like, what do you leave out? There really isn’t a ticking clock with Yorick, so what we basically did was give him a reason to get from Boston to California in a really short time.”

With Caruso and Shia LaBeouf’s already-established working relationship (”Disturbia” and the upcoming “Eagle Eye”), does the director already have his “last man”? “This is funny, but unbeknownst to me: Shia was already chasing this part prior to anything,” Caruso said. “I haven’t talked to him yet about it because he’s off shooting ‘Indiana Jones 4,’ but Shia is the right type and the right personality because you want to have the humor, but you also want to have the seriousness. So we’ll talk about it when we get there.”

Unfortunately I have never read any of the ‘Y The Last Man’ comic books, but I am very excited to see this movie if it has the Disturbia team behind it. Although, I really doubt it that Shia Lebeouf would be able to film this movie considering his soaring popularity and rapidly increasing filmography.

This project also sounds different from the other “Last Man of Earth” film projects that I have witnessed throughout my lifetime. I’m thrilled to finally see a movie where women are kick ass soldiers instead of whiny and helpless victims who needs the last man on Earth to rescue and save them. What about you?

  1. Y the Last Man is one of the best non-super hero comics in the last 10 years and is definitely worth checking out. Unfortunately, there is no way that they can do the series justice as a 2 hour film. It really should be an HBO or Showtime series. There is a beginning, middle and, soon to be, end to Y, so unless they’re going to do a a series of films, it’s going to feel rushed.

Shia LeBeof is a great choice to play Yorrick Brown, though.

  2. John says:

I think Shia’s a bit too young for the role, at least in terms of appearance. Someone like James Roday would make a much better Yorick.

That man has some of the yellowest teeth I’ve seen in Hollywood.

Y: The Last Man is a great series and well worth checking out.
But why they make a movie out of it is beyond me.
Do a TV show! You could literally film the exact pages from the graphic novel and you have a kickass show!
Just imagine the pilot, with all the men dying. Who wouldn’t go on watch that. There’s too much material to just make one movie.
But I like Shia as Yorick. I know the Labeouf hype is getting a bit crazy now, but this kid really got it going on.

your totally right Mozzerino. I would love this to be a HBO series. It fits the mold for that perfectly. A movie just doesn’t make sense. They will cut out too much and on top of that they will need to make like 5 or 6 movies and if the first one fails then there goes the whole thing and were are screwed.

    thats one disturbing looking grin.

was i the only one that thought disturbia was very average? The action at the end was almost scream-esque. The worst bit was where the kid told the hot girl essentially that he WAS stalking her, and she seemed to find it some kind of turn-on… at least the plot will be all but written for them.. compared to Disturbia I can almost believe this comic by the sound of it!
