Fantastic Zodiac CGI Work

By John Campea - September 18, 2007 - 11:08 America/Montreal

The film Zodiac was a huge let down to me. Solid performances given, but all contained in a ferociously disjointed and unfocused narrative that refused to allow me to get invested in any other the characters before jumping points and putting the focus on something or someone else. I understand what they were going for… but to me, it failed (it should be noted though that most critics really liked the film and I’m in the minority here).

What I didn’t realized about Zodiac was how brilliant the CGI work in the film was. Why was it brilliant? Because you didn’t even know it was there most of the time.

The good folks over at RopeOfSilicon posted this impressive video today showing a bunch of the CGI work done in the film. Check it out:

  1. For a similar aha experience concerning CGI, take a look at the directors commentary for Amelie from Montmartre by Jeunet.

There’s of course some obvious CGI work in that film, but the amazing stuff is the things you don’t see.

I loved Zodiac personally; I haven’t been that engrossed in a movie for a long time.

That’s a pretty impressive video, although there were a lot of shots in there that looked like they could have just as easily been done practically. Does it not just push the budget up unnecessarily?

Technically you guys are film reviewers not film critics.

How cool is that video? And I thought I was paying very close attention since Zodiac had me glued for the most part!! Honestly, I was clueless!!!

Wow. That was impressive. What CG should be used for. To enhance the story not overshadow it. Someone tell Stephen Sommers to watch that.

To be quite honest with you, while watching Zodiac, my brother and I found that one of its major drawbacks was the use of background CGI. There were tmes when we were taken so far out of the movie by the usage of blatantly fake backgrounds. My brother has noticed it first and then after that it just bothered me throughout.
