Forgotten Hottie: Russell Wong
Whatever happened to Mr. Russell Wong? As a child, when most girls my age were crushing over band members from New Kids on the Block or cast members of Beverly Hills 90210, I was crushing over obscure character actors. I first noticed Wong in 1991 when he played a supporting role in New Jack City. He then went on to co-star in big hits like The Joy Luck Club and Prophecy 2, but it was in 2000 when I developed my huge crush on Russell Wong when he played the handsome and lethal Kai in Romeo Must Die.
From then on in, I tried to watch every straight to DVD movie and tv show he guest starred in. (I even have the True Crime: Streets on L.A video game just because he voices the main character!) How I long to see this handsome and talented man hit the big screen again. He is rumored to be in next year’s The Mummy 3 as Michelle Yeoh’s boyfriend. Will this be his big comeback he needs? Your thoughts?

Seriously, he was good in Prophecy 2 (wasn’t that straight to dvd?). And really, really hope Mummy 3 is better than 2. Just saw it today again on the SPACE Channel here in Canada and just couldn’t believe how bad it is.
Wong is a good and underused actor, Serena. I have to concur.

You want to see Abel Ferrara’s “China Girl” (1987) It is nearly the same part, with a better ‘Romeo and Juliet’ inspiration, and a better story. Better actors too. Better everything.
I don’t know if it’s on DVD. I still keep an eye out for it, along with the TV film series ‘Vanishing Son’…
…and China Cry…which *is* available on DVD.

I’m all for a little fun, but if this is the direction TheMovieBlog is headed, you’re going to lose a lot of readers, man…

I thought he was really good in Romeo Must Die to bad his career never really took off after that film.

These posts I’ve created have been generating some discussion, and so far I haven’t heard much complaints. (Except from a couple of guys who don’t want to read about other men) So, like I told those two, if you don’t like it…don’t read it. Simple as that.

I’m a big Russell Wong fan myself; and if you can find them, try to get copies of “Vanishing Son”. It was a syndicated TV program (as well as 3 movies, I believe) which starred Wong and were produced in the early tomid 90s. The movies play out like the “A Better Tomorrow” series by John Woo, and the TV prgram is a direct riff on the old David Carrdine show, “Kung-Fu”, only closer to Bruce Lee’s original vision given its take on Asian stertyping in the United States. All of them were excellnet, and I’ve been trying to hunt them down myself for some time. Good Post.

To be honest I have seen several of the movies mentioned above, and, well, I still have no idea who this dude is. He is a good-looking chap, but I think he sort of falls in to the Objectifiable Hotness category of Generic Good Looking People.

I saw The Joy Luck Club a couple of weeks ago and was wondering the exact same thing. I thought Vanishing Son was great but after that he just disappeared.
This guy is soooooo hot I could die. I have a poster of him from the Black Sash premier party. Ugh… so fine! Probably the reason his career hasn’t really taken off is simply because hollywood has no parts for many asian-am actors, even if they are incredibly sexy and manly. Hollywood loves to keep its asian male actors emasculated and submissive for the most part. Russell is actually bi-racial (euro-am mom) but because his looks are closer to those typical of asian folks, you know he’s gonna get type-casted. I’m thinkin’ of becoming a casting agent just to meet him. Does anyone know if he does nudity? I’d be all over that!

Well about the Hunky actor “Russell Wong.” I remember him in a series that came on television along time ago! But, I just don’t recall that series! When I first saw the good looking asian actor I thought! “WOW” who is he? I fell in Love right then and there! I’m not asian myself but “wow” I don’t think that I have to be to know what a good looking guy looks like! Please bring him back on the big screen or even a weekly series! I’ll make sure that I’m home for every episode! His green eye’s, big Hunky Body! And his Beautiful Smile! Oh, I’m Single!
