John

You keep mentioning that “Star Trek” is dead, in dire need of a reboot. I’m in the camp of NO. It needs better writers not afraid to stray from our established characters. There are whole book series of materials to make it to the big screen. It’s not as if they don’t have any ideas.

But that’s the reason why I write. A dead franchise? I’ve been thinking about this for some time. Why is that? Why are the fans not there in the numbers they used to be? Why are we dying out? The recent movies have been no better than say episodes of “Stargate”. But they seem to have a bigger following. I have the answer - the definitive answer... ownership.

I have a big DVD collection, far too many titles I don’t have time to watch, but I continue to buy more. My addiction... well that and pornography. But everybody has that bug. This season of “Lost” has been fantastic, it’s already on my list of titles to buy. If it’s like the other box sets, it’s gonna be a $59.99. Season one had seven discs. Season two has six discs. Good stuff.

Some very IMPORTANT numbers John - original retail prices... STNG S1 $139.99 (7 DVDs), STNG S1 $139.99 (6 DVDs), STNG S3 $139.99 (7 DVDs), STNG S4 $139.99 (7 DVDs), STNG S5 $139.99 (7 DVDs), STNG S6 $139.99 (7 DVDs), STNG S7 $139.99 (7 DVDs), STDS9 S1 $129.99 (6 DVDs), STDS9 S2 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STDS9 S3 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STDS9 S4 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STDS9 S5 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STDS9 S6 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STDS9 S7 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STV S1 $129.99 (5 DVDs!!!), STV S2 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STV S3 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STV S4 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STV S5 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STV S6 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STV S7 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STE S1 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STE S2 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STE S3 $129.99 (7 DVDs), STE S4 $129.99 (6 DVDs).

And now the remastered/enhanced version of Star Trek: Classic Season One $198.99 (HD/DVD combo release - they won’t release it solely on standard DVD). WTF?

You keep saying Trek isn’t Introducing new fans the franchise. There’s your answer. Ownership. Remember lending Bruxy your box set for BSG? You created a fan. That does NOT happen with Trek. It’s far too expensive. Only the diehard fans own them. And considering how friggin’ expensive it is, they’re not gonna lend them out to newbies. Before people used to have the series on VHS, you could buy one episode at a time, easy lend out.

It’s not in need of a reboot, it’s in need of fucking sensible pricing. I’ll say it; “Star Wars” has far more fans. The last three films are crap. Why so many minons? Because all Lucas’ re-re-re-re-re-releases are affordable. It allows new people to be exposed to that universe. To OWN it. This simple concept is losted on Paramount. And no, I don’t own any of the seasons of any of the series, I can’t afford them.

Lastly on that time travel thing. Doesn’t bother me. Getting tired of it? Please! You tired of romantic comedies? Tired of action movies? Tired of zombie movies (yeah, buy you never seemed to like that concept)? As long as it’s done well, I have no problem. Are you actually that jaded? As for elder Spock being in the flick. It actually makes a lot of sense. When we last saw him he was on Romulus, starting that rebellion for reunification. But as I wrote from the start. I prefer something else.

Hi John,

1. My question is what are thoughts on the current state of the Canadian film industry? As a Canadian, I was wondering why is there a lack of Canadian films in theaters. The last film I could think of is Fido and that was months ago. It seems to me that most of the Canadian talent needs to move down south of the border to find success because theres nothing for them in Canada.

2. Have you seen any recent foreign films lately that you enjoyed? Is there any upcoming foreign films your looking forward to seeing?

Thanks...I'll tune in tonight to hear your answers.

Hey John....i come to the site everyday, but im a first time commenter, and i have a question to ask......I would really like to know your thoughts on Rob Zombies Halloween....I thought it was very well done....it wasnt amazing,it didnt top the original, but that was the point.....people/critics have been giving this movie alot of crap cause either A: its not better than the original,or B: rob zombie directed it. As long as people take the movie for what it is rather than what it ISNT, and watch it with an open mind they would like it.....people go in with the assumption that right away its gonna suck cause rob zombie directed it.....dont get me wrong the guys no spielberg, but i gotta say that this film is his best yet, whihc like i said isnt saying much...but you gotta give the guy some credit.....if people got to see it assuming or wanting it to suck...its gonna suck no matter what to those people....haha but anyway, hope to hear this on the show!!!!

Hi Giavonni!

I got a few questions for you:

1. Dark Horse, IDW, Image etc etc. If Marvel & DC were were to run out of ideas (which would be a while also almost impossible) could any of these companys rule the comic book cinema?

2. In your prespective is Spider Man 3 the worst film of all time? If not where does it rank on a list between 1-100

3. What does SAW IV need to do to be a good film besides have a plot? and if it dosen't deliever and ends up like SAW III would they bother to make SAW V & VI?

John, I see a disturbing trend in summer movies. This was arguably the worst summer in several years yet the BO - acknowledging higher ticket prices - continues to roll along.

Where is the incentive for the studios to produce good product? Are we getting what we deserve?

Hi John,

Just a little fun question. In light of your post about movie snacks and how they kill diets, what is the one food item that movie concession stands do not yet supply that you would drool, go crazy, buy, and devour every single time you went to the theatre? What deliciously sinful comestible do they not have yet?

Cheers and all the best:)

question john:

it's unanimous the leo dicaprio is a bad ass actor. but would you agree that come oscar time he has the worst timing ever? '04 was the aviator and he was awesome but i'm sorry, jamie did ray charles better than leo did howard hughes.

then recently he got nominated for blood diamond, which i think is his best role to date (he nailed that zimbabwe accent) but really though, was anyone going to beat forrest whitaker that year? not a chance.

so john, when is leo gonna win one? the guy should definately get the lifetime achievement award for shakin off that damn pretty boy image after 'titanic' and show us moviegoers that h aint fuckin around

take it easy john.

with rob zombie's halloween "remake" being released this past weekend, which would you rather see a friday the 13th remake or a nightmare on elm street remake (given of course they still use Robert Englund as freddy)?
