Kristina:

well, i kind of disagree about it impacting our lives. popular culture in a very real way helps define the majority of north american people's social environment.

while it is not the be all and end all, i would say that at the end of the day it effects the attitudes/opinions of the people around us. and i don't see how someone like britney can have a healthy effect.

i think the whole idea of mtv setting her up is interesting....but it also makes me wonder a couple of other things....

did britney know she wasn't prepared? or is she in that thick of a 'bubble'?

did her handlers see how unprepared she was?

did the execs who own her contract see how unprepared she was?

we have to assume that if MTV saw the problem, other then other people did too. i think that offers up some more food for thought on the subject.

now personally i don't know if she is a bad mother or not. why? because i don't know her. i have never been in her house, i have never met her kids. i think that any info we get is filtered and positioned for an agenda, whether it is coming from a the tabloids or her PR people.

@Miles

Well, this trash doesn't impact your life or my life. It's just something to talk about.

And yeah, my sympathy for her doesn't run very deep, but what MTV did was pretty screwed up, and if she is as bad a mother as people are saying, then I feel deeply for those children. No kid deserves to have their teeth rotting out because Mommy only feeds them Cheetos.

maybe if their mother wasn't a trashy attention whore they would be spared these things.

fact: they are going to have a much more privileged life then any of us ever will. my sympathies only run so deep. i can only go "Ooooo, the poor millionaire" for so long. some people have real problems. like their husband's being maimed at war, or not being able to afford food for their kids.

i feel sympathy for those people. sympathy for britney and her kids? because someone said something onstage that ordinairy people say everyday? never.

people should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this sort of trash to impact their lives. it really is garbage. it has no value. i guess i am guilty too, because i am here talking about it.

@Miles

If you want to bust on Britney, that's fine, but you don't fuck with somebody's kids. That's crossing a line.

@kristina

silverman was hilarious.

i think you are missing out on one very important thing: britney got what she asked for. she wants more! didn't you hear the song? more fame, more money, more press, more more more!

i thought that the lyrics to the song were really interesting...they were so narcissistic while she turned in this terrible performance that spoke louder with words that she has had enough.

i think silverman gave britney exactly what she deserved, only 8 years too late.

it is a fitting reaction to someone who literally got one stage, asked for more money, more fame and more recognition while proving in their performance that they did not deserve it.

go buy an indie cd, support some artists, learn some new songs and wash this garbage out of your brain.

@Anonymous

It WAS truly painful to watch. When the routine first started, she was wobbly, but I just assumed that it was those massive heels that she was wearing. As it went on, I could feel myself drawing away from the television. I was on the phone with my mom and little sister, telling them to watch, and we all just gasped when we saw how out of it she was. It's not her weight that bothers me. For fuck's sake, she's had two kids! It's that zoned-out look on her face that freaked me out. CNN was talking about it last night, and one guy said it reminded him of Elvis' last performance before he died. She annoys the hell out of me, as do her little clique of retards that she runs with, but if she doesn't snap out of it, she won't live to see 30.

Kristina, I think you have hit a nail on the head. It would not surprise me to in the least if they directly or indirectly were involved in the other "main event" of the evening...(the ground n pound antics of Kid Rock and Tommy Lee) but I have slowly lost respect for MTV over the last 15 years or so for a variety of reasons. One that has crept up again in the last few days:

*They were the sponsor of the halftime Super 'Viagra' Bowl, where a "wardrobe malfuction" took place. The excuse was extremely hypocritical: "Timberlake was supposed to do it, but only the bra of Janet Jackson would show". So, that's okay in front of a family audience, then? Then MTV and the rest of the vermin bitch about the FCC cracking down?

oh and the fat thing? she did look fat COMPARED to how perfectly hot she looks in any other performance of hers.

she just wasnt prepared, and wasnt into the performance at all. i almost feel bad, shes quite messed up. its like the VMAs forced her to do this show and she wasnt ready/didnt want to do it yet. whatever.

britney spears is an interesting little thing isnt she.

truth is though, no matter what, she is still somewhat of a phenom. she got the opening gig at the VMAs to boost ratings and because people would be interested.

no one else is interesting enough to enough people for them to have been asked to open the show when they hadent done anything musically for several years.

and im not sure if she was/is a terrible singer, or just a pretty bad singer, but i will admit she could always put on an entertaining performance. whioh is what makes her VMA flop so interesting and fascinating. she looked bad and didnt move very much and had no energy and didnt even lipsync very well. that was not britney the very interesting performer that she was before.

with all that said, its way too early for a movie about her, because who knows whats gonna happen next. something tells me shes not done, not done with her shitty music, and not done with everything else she does that many find so fascinating. but in time, oh yes, a movie will be made. i might tune in.
