Transformers 2: Spoilers in Disguise
Michael Bay took a lot of flack from the Transformer fanboys (I was a skeptic too) until the movie came out and now if you want to bash Transformers you tend to find yourself in the minority. But a lot of the bashing came from internet leaks about what they figured he was up to, and now Bay is armed and ready for us.
You’ll remember that Bay and company dealt with plenty of early leaks on the first Transformers film, so much so that Paramount even had a few sites temporarily shut down due to their publishing of movie photos. But Bay claims he’s ready to handle it now, and when he spoke with Rotten Tomatoes recently, he said: “One thing I do know is I know how to screw them up more… We’re going to leak a lot of false information all over the place. I now know their game. They’re going to get a lot of script treatments that they think are going to be the script. They will never see the script. We’ve got scripts and treatments written up that we’re going to leak. No one’s going to know. There’s one out that’s fake right now.
So Bay is playing the reverse psychology card so we will have NO CLUE what to expect by flooding us with information that will almost entirely be false.
Even if some intrepid insider risks his internship and future in film to release some top secret news we are going to be so buried in red herrings that we won’t believe you anyways?
I think this is a VERY poor move on their part. We have already proven that the online community builds up so much buzz and free publicity for the movies that it is just shooting yourself in the foot to tell us in advance that nothing we get online will be accurate. This discourages us from talking about it at all.
Do remember that this very site was one of the ones that Paramount shut down over Transformers leaks, and we are ready to deal with you too Paramount! (kidding!)

I think it’s dumb as well. You can throw the internet a few legit bits here and there without giving the whole she-bang away. The internet is a very powerful tool, and if they screw around, it can be used against them.
Yeah… at first I thought it was actually a GOOD idea… but you’re right Rod… all it’s going to to is discourage sites from talking about Transformers. And whether they like it or not… people talking about Transformers is PART of what made them so much money.
You NEVER announce your game plan to the opposing team, I don’t know what they think they’re doing. Seems rather stupid to me.
I don’t know. I hated the first one, but I’ll give part 2 a chance, only because I was a huge fan growing up and I’m holding out hope that they can fix everything they screwed up the first time. I actually like what Bay is doing. Whether they are leaking real or fake information, I find it hard to believe that the internet community won’t be talking about the movie anyway. It might even increase talk, with people trying to figure out what’s real and what’s not. Just my 2 cents.
i like the idea the keep the move as secerate as you can. I like the first transformeri relly did i oney complate was it was to kide frendy if they cod take a lidde more sersicly like terminater 2 i think they will have agood thing goign
does transformers 2 really need internet buzz to help get the word out? lets face it….its as close to a sure thing as you can get.
the first one did absolutely but now the film is so successful its as close to a sure thing as you can get.
i don’t think this will help or hinder the films potential success.
it is a strangely dumb thing to announce though. surely this would only work if you were doing it in secret..mind you bay doesn’t seem to be the brightest of guys.
and he seriously needs to do something with his hair.
Whichever tidbit that involves a “Jar Jar jr” character has got to be a legit source.
‘Jar Jar’ character I thought they already filled that quota with frenzy in the first movie?
Spoilers, huh? Never read any spoilers about Transformers 2, but I’ll be damned if Frenzy returns. Give us Soundwave, give us GIANT FUCKIN’ ROBOTS(TM), and give us WAR!
I agree that it will piss the community off. I also think that Bay won’t be able to control as much leakage as he thinks (i know how that sounds so don’t start). If the film is going to have as much outdoor filming as the last film, it will be near impossible.
Of course, if Transformers 2 has ESB scale twists and revelations (or the Crying Game scale – turns out that Soundwave was Arcee all along) that blow us away when we hear them for the first time in the theater, then i guess all will be forgiven…..
….Except that never happens these days with an event movie. The novelization is always out week before the movie and these hardcore fans you speak of, wait for the doors to open at Borders so they can be the first to read it and print the pages on the superherohype boards. Try stopping that Mr Bay.
Dare I ask whether this was not some sort of joke taken in the wrong way? I think its kind of funny.
–spoilers– Its gonna be as bad as the first……but prettier…..llke bad boys 2
Bay faces a challenge with the next one. Fans expect T2 to be much more robot focused. The problem with that is the more robots you show the more the picture’s budget goes up.
I am surprised more movies DON’T do this. I don’t think it would have discouraged sites from talking about the movie, had he kept his yap shut.
He doesn’t want us to know what he’s doing wrong so we don’t have the chance to get it to change. If something he wants to do it disliked my enough of the community, the studio might make him listen. If he can stop our opinion from counting, he won’t have to care what we think and can make it however he wants.
I liked the Transformers movie. I really did. But there were many things in it that I did not like, and through listening to directors commentary and listening to actors and people involved in making the movie, I have found that every part of the movie I didn’t like was there because of him, Michael Bay. There were even changes he was making, in which other people would tell him it was wrong and he wouldn’t listen. He can be in charge of directing the action all he wants. That’s fine by me. He is brilliant at directing action sequences. But, someone else needs to be in charge of the story elements because he seems to lack respect, depth and intelligence in the areas where such things are needed.
I could go on and pick apart the points where he failed in the first movie, but this doesn’t need to go there. The point is, he wants full control when he doesn’t have the needed talent to run it properly. Someone or someones need to make sure he doesn’t get that control. Don’t give him leeway just because the first movie succeeded. It didn’t succeed because of Michael Bay. It succeed because many people did their jobs right. Don’t let him take their jobs this time around because he’s taken/was given the credit.
South Park imagination Land hit the nail on the head with Michael Bay – ‘those aren’t ideas they are special effects!’
‘I dont understand the difference…’
Eh, I’m in the minority here, but I think it’s a pretty fun idea.
I think it’s a great idea too. If it keeps the buzz going and keeps critics mouth going on about “stuff that’s happening” as opposed to “stuff that’s happening but they are doing it all wrong and a monkey could do it better”.
You say “Michael Bay took a lot of flack from the Transformer fan boys (I was a sceptic too) until the movie came out” which means by your explanation that there were people discouraging others ahead of time from seeing the final product. Yet you add “We have already proven that the online community builds up so much buzz and free publicity”.
Actually how do you explain the Star Trek and Snakes on a plain kind of internet fan base and not being able to generate interest. I don’t want to discredit your work, but it’s probably more of nudge, not a push.
I think what Bay means by this, is he likes the publicity, but keep it at that, leave the negative comments on how they “should” make the movie out of it.
So it’s like reporting the news, keep it unbiased if their is such a thing. The critic should leave the criticisms ’till after they have seen the movie. Keep us informed, then once the critic has seen the film, advise to no, go or Routh.
What do you guys think?
“One thing I do know is I know how to screw them up more… We’re going to leak a lot of false information all over the place. I now know their game. They’re going to get a lot of script treatments that they think are going to be the script. They will never see the script. We’ve got scripts and treatments written up that we’re going to leak. No one’s going to know. There’s one out that’s fake right now”
Poor Micheal Bay has lost what was left of his little mind, never mind the fact how silly it is to release fake scripts in order to trick people into believing that they are the real deal, while at the same time telling people before hand that he is going to be releasing fake scripts. Masterfully played Mr. Bay.
Instead of spending so much time writing fake scripts and treatments and trying to fool a handful internet fanboys, he should focusing his efforts on delivering a better product then his dreadful first Transformers movie. I’m banking on the next leaked script to feature the Autobots facing the planet consuming threat of Micheal Bay’s Ego.
@Xanther,
I never claimed to be a critic or a news reporter and this site prides itself that none of us writers are either of those things.
That being said, your examples of Snakes and Trek are not valid since the producers of both of those movies have the online community to thank that anyone went to see those films at all.
MUCH of the media buzz revolving around Snakes on a PLANE came from online sources. The movie would have come and gone had not the online pundits started to rave about it. The very title of Snakes on a Plane was brought about from a fan forum conversation.
@Rodney,
I think you missed the points I was trying to make.
(Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)Lets hope that he can be more original with the vehicle choices this time. Like making Omega Supreme a Pontiac Sunfire. I mean come on Jazz was a racing Porche. He shouldn’t be so cheap with this budget, give other car companies and manufactures their props.
Dupodave, the fact that GM signed on as an official sponsor helped the budget for production. GM PAID for that right.
And Megatron was a hand pistol. Yeah, THAT would have gone over well.
