More news about the Dragonball film today, and it is the greatest kind of news. It appears his royal highness Chow Yun Fat has graced the film with his presence! We get the scoop today from our friends at comingsoon:
Chow Yun-Fat will star in 20th Century Fox’s live-action adaptation of Dragonball, says The Hollywood Reporter. Chow will play Master Roshi. He rounds out a cast that includes Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Emmy Rossum and Jamie Chung.
The film, directed by James Wong, follows Goku (Chatwin), a warrior alien who protects the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the universe and controlling mystical objects known as Dragon Balls. Stephen Chow is producing.
Chow Yun Fat is macho, Clint Eastwood level macho. I remember the first time I saw Hard Boiled at a friend’s house, my mouth was open the whole time as I soaked in the awesome and thought to myself who is this dude?
Chow Yun Fat is an awesome action star and It rules that the studio brought him on board. Having him play a mentor role should be great and I am quite interested to see him use his skills alongside producer Stephen Chow. Lots of Dragonball news has been flying around as of late, but this takes the cake as far as I am concerned. The more I hear about this movie – the more I want to see it.

Dragon ball Z IMO should have been a beowolf, final fantasy 7:AC , CGI movie… theres no way you can make a movie with over the top flying martial arts with power up moves without looking like some cheap power rangers spin off.
I agree pandaboy, DBZ in Beowolf style would be freaking amazing. I saw a picture of chatwin as Goku, doesn’t really impress me to be honest, here is the link to the picture

Just scroll down when you get into the page.
I hope they don’t take away the perverted side of Roshi’s character in the film. Should be funny watching Yun Fat checking out the hot girls.
I really don’t know what to expect of this. I’m a big fan of DragonBall and the Dbz anime. I just hope Chow brings a lot of input into the film. As pandaboy said, it would’ve been cool seeing this film in completely in CGI.
Oh i don’t want to see any cable martial arts. they were cool at first but they irritate the **** out of me now lol.
Ok, so im not much of a fan of Dragon Ball Z (i think its stupid as shit) but lets hold the phone for a second here, from what I gather, this film could easily be doable in live action without too much of a zany or over the top feel but only as long as the director understands where to stop and when the time is right to have dudes fly and throw some fucking laser-beams from their hands.
Now im not an expert on the martial arts films, but having Chow Yun Fat in your movie is instant brownie points in my book, and if this thing is really supposed to be a balls to the wall martial arts punch em up then punch em up some more movie, I can’t think of anyone better for it.
I loved DB and DBZ while I was growing up, but correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t remember actually seeing any real martial arts in the shows. All I saw were a group of people who ran or flew and threw kicks and punches really fast, I couldn’t really recognize any unique styles at all.
If they want to do a live action DBZ movie, I hope they do it with a style similar to the Volcano High movie, it has a very Dragonball kinda feel to it.

This guy is totally overrated to the edge. The movie is gonna suck balls!
Chow Yun Fat? Gosh, I’m still disappointed that out of all the great anime that deserves the live-action treatment (cough**akira**cough**evangelion**cough), Fox decided to go with DBZ, the show that’s Number One at the top of my list for ‘least favorite and overrated’ anime series of all time. Number Two would be ‘any & all Gundam series’.
Wow I just realized the extensive run-on sentence my previous comment. I apologize for the poor writing skills.
Chow Yun Fat is music to my ears. He was so mis used in Pirate’s 3 it was just saddening. I just hope they keep Master Roshi’s memorable and likable personality traits intact that made him such a great character.
To David:
The Eva and Akira movies are already both in the works. Google them both for more info. Although theres not much news yet on both, theres some fantastic concept art for the Eva movie out there, among other stuff.
Theres also a Ghost in the Shell movie under way, as well as Battle Angel.
Yes Dragon Ball is over rated, it’s still a great place to start for Hollywood to dive into live action movie adaptations of classic anime.
Dragon Ball is a simple, but uniq tale, filled with lots of insane action and a good mix of all kinds of characters. It also has a huge fan base and should make lots of money. Which in turn will help jump start an anime based movie craze. Kind of like like what the first X-Men movie did for comic book films, Blade as well.
It’s a perfect start before they get into the more complex stuff. Lets just hope it turns out to be a good start.
And about Gundam, the best of Gundam is in a league of it’s own compared to DBZ in terms of complex story telling and best use of sci-fi action. Check out Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.
Kaneda979 – The thing that’s frustrating for me about the live action Dragonball Z movie is that it seems to have kinda come out of nowhere, while the other films (Eva, Akira, etc.) have been in pre-production for years but haven’t even been greenlit!
I know Dragonball Z has a huge following. It was lucky to have been part of the ‘anime boom’ (along with Pokemon) in the mid-1990s. I’m sure that 20th Century Fox sees that DBZ is has quite a bit of commercial viability (i.e. it will make them some cash). My hope is that after it makes some money (along with Speed Racer), we’ll finally see the other projects also get made. Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Akira have been in pre-production for what seems like forever.
EVA: Even though Peter Jackson’s WETA was working on designs for EVA, production halted over two years ago.
AKIRA: Four years ago, director Stephen Norrington was gonna do Akira but that fell through.
BATTLE ANGEL: ‘Terminator’ director James Cameron was gonna do Battle Angel, but that was several years ago and I doubt he’ll ever actually make it, since he’s averaging one movie ever 10 years or so these days! ^_^
I think Japan should take back the rights to the live action versions of all those properties and do them the right way. Casshern was a good start.
power rangers is cool
its going to be a good
now that Justin Chatwin joined the cast the movie is gonna be fill in the blank>_______ idk is it gonna be good i hope so cause im a big dbz and db and dbgt fan XP
Why on earth would Chow get himself into this stupidity!?
He’s surely going to be worse off now than he was in POTC3, and worse now it would seem like everybody’s boycotting him
