Wowie, the first time Doug responded to one of my comments. Sniff *wipes a tear from my eye Sniff. Now if only John would pay attention to me, my life would be complete...

Doug, you're right about Wrath of Khan being better than First Contact, but it's almost like comparing apples and oranges. They're different fruit, one is orange, one is softer...I've lost my train of thought.

@ Ajax and tobor68

Ahhh yes the great bond debate, your forgetting one this and thats the generation gap between Bonds not to mention that the Bond movies were not interlock sequels so no need for continuity. As for TNG, that was not a reboot per say. It had diffrent charaters and storys and them interacting with charaters from the classic series.

Ransom, quit lying to yourself. Generations was hurting. :P

First Contact was ok, but come on. That cast was awesome and they deserved way better. The fact that they never got a movie with a script as crucial as Wrath Of Khan sucks balls.

I actually like the casting choices that have been made. Simon Pegg as Scotty is just crazy enough to be great.

Sorry Doug but TNG did have one great movie that was First Contact, and to a lesser extent, Generations was pretty good too. I won't even bother mentioning those other TNG movies.

I think the franchise is moving in a great direction with this new movie. If nothing else, it's at least a new direction, which is something Star Trek has needed for awhile.

I'm a little disappointed that there will be no new TNG movies, but they killed their chances with the last big screen suckfest.

i think trek is ready for a reboot, for sure!

grave, TNG was a reboot and it reinvigorated the franchise for almost 20 years. the unfortunate thing about TNG was the large cast just doesn't translate well into a movie, unless you make it with a format like say 'love actually' and nobody wants that.

i'm glad star trek is going back to the 'three heads' character structure. it should lend itself well to a good actioner like the best of the trek films, and nobody feels short changed that their favorite character only got two lines in the movie.

i'm generalizing of course but the trinity structure works so much better: intellect (spock), heart (mccoy), reason (kirk).

@2 - yeah that's what they said after Connery quit Bond and look where we are today. Are the TOS characters iconic? Absolutely. Then again so is Bond, Batman, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood etc etc etc. The TOS characters are filled with too much potential to be reined in by one set of actors.

Why not revisit the most famous Trek characters?

Oh and Doug, forget the college years angle - we are going to see Kirk take command of the Enterprise from Pike. Can't wait!

I'm a longtime Trek fan, and the only reason I am excited about the new film is <em>because</em> it is being rebooted.

The last few incarnations (films and TV) have been same-old, same-old....Trek has been stuck in a rut. I am evidently one of the few who actually enjoyed <em>Enterprise</em>, but I have to admit it was part of the <em>rut</em> also.

I am less concerned about "Trek the college years" than I am about a rehash of the same old Trek-drek that we've been getting.

Im sorry there are some movies you can and cannot reboot. Star Trek is one of them. The reason is because the charaters are so iconic in stature that possibly a modern audience wont accept a diffrent actor as capt kirk or spock. Not to mention the classic Star Trek is still in sindicated TV. I just think this is gonna feel so rushed because its only been a few years we not had a new show or movie till now. They should have waited for a generation gap b4 starting this project.
