Enter The Dragon Remake

Enter-The-DragonFor those of you who have been reading The Movie Blog for a while, you know I’m one of those guys who has no problem with the idea of a remake for just about anything. I think they can work… and sometimes do work. But even I think some things should be off limits. Like Bruce Lee movies.

I heard this morning that Warner Bros. is planning on doing an “Enter the Dragon” remake. Now, the reason I think a film like this should be out of bounds is that… well… the movie IS Bruce Lee. It’s not just a movie with Bruce Lee as the star… the movie IS Bruce Lee. However, from the sounds of what they have in mind… it sounds more like s “based on Enter the Dragon” rather than a “remake” of Enter the Dragon. The folks over at Movieweb give us this:

Enter the Dragon is being remade by Warner Independent Pictures as a noir thriller. According to Variety, The Shield executive producer Kurt Sutter will be making his feature directing debut with the film, currently entitled Awaken the Dragon. Sutter is also writing the script, which will be a contemporary drama that follows a lonely F.B.I. agent into the bloody world of underground martial arts fighting. There, he must track a renegade Shaolin monk who has been causing a lot of problems for the local police force.

Sutter stated, “I’m a huge noir fan, and this plot lends itself to the film I want to make. I wanted to set it in these underground fight clubs where the action is really raw and expose the brutality of Shaolin Kung fu. This will be more Raging Bull than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in its viciousness.”

See… I’m ok with something like this. A different movie, with a different title who’s main influence is Enter the Dragon is totally cool to me. Not sure why they’re calling it a remake… but they are… so there you go.

As for the movie itself… hell yeah. Sounds good to me. I’m always up for any kind of tournament/fighting film.

  1. True, there will only be one Bruce Lee, in principle i like the concept of resurecting the movie with todays cinamatic advances if E.T.D were made today
With Bruce Lee. it would be incredible, a remake?? basicly weve been there done, done that lost the t shirt along with my lava lamp, when i gave to goodwill theres no way to reserct the dragon w out cgi!

  2. Remake? No! Influenced by? Why bother! Do something original…

You are treading on sacred ground.

Bruce’s legacy should be left alone… Even today, Enter The Dragon holds it’s own as a martial arts/action movie. Segal, Van Dam, Jet Li… These guys don’t compare to Bruce’s intensity on the big screen. Thirty four years after the fact, Enter The Dragon remains the standard…

The Jason Bourne movies are thrilling in their fighting sequences, perhaps Hollywood should stop there…

    Gil.

  3. Just to let them know that it is impossible to remake Enter the Dragon. Bruce Lee had a messenge in the movie to send out to people by you guys changing it your not sending out the same messenge. i hope you had linda lee look and know about it first. and the remake most likely will suck ass cause almost all remakes suck ass. you cant replace Bruce Lee he is what you see and he is alot faster in real life. he is a fighting machine. the only guy close to his builtness and speed is Tony Jaa. but not even he is like him. WTF you guys are doing i dont know but please rethink about this.

  5. Buy a cheap third-party script. Retool it slightly. Stick a well-established name of an old movie on it. Instant cash.

    I hate studios.

This isn’t a remake or a Based on. This is simply using a well known title to sell their crappy otherwise DTV movie.

  6. I totally agree with some of these comments up here.

I think Hollywood is getting too obsessed with the term “Re-Make”. First of all, this suggests a lack of new ideas that “pretends” to be something new. Now they’re even dare of carrying this pretentious mindset and flirt with a name like “Bruce Lee”? COME ON! This movie will ruffle a lot of feathers if they decide to shoot this “so-called” movie.

This will not make Warner look good; it is an unjustified insult to the Legend. There are still a lot of subject matters and great books to be made into films; but please, please do not tamper with a movie classic that is represented by an eternal legend. Leave the classic alone. Respect the Legend.

If they really decide to release this movie, Warner will piss off a lot of Bruce Lee supporters, including myself. I agree with Mofo Toshio completely, there will NEVER be another Bruce Lee. NEVER! So Warner will use any special effects possible to enhance whoever is gonna play this pivotal role. What does that mean? An insult to the Legend. And I don’t think there will be any action star who will jeopardize his career by taking on this film.

This is going way to far! Warner should regroup and really think about the consequences of implementing such risky, unethical and disrespectful action.

  7. WOW WB ripping off Bruce Lee again.. This is going way to far to remake a movie that a legend made half of and died before it was even released.. If you agree with the making of this movie then you really dont know anything about Bruce Lee.. This remake should be boycotted.. I wont be seeing it thats for sure.

  8. I’m not sure why this is called a “remake”. Scores of films have been inspired by or influenced by Enter The Dragon. Heck, you can almost call the video-game to film “Mortal Kombat” a remake if you want. But it isn’t. It just tips the hat to Enter The Dragon several times.

Look at “Awaken The Dragon” plotline. If this is a “remake” of “Enter The Dragon”….then “Enter The Dragon” has already been remade a gazillion times, because that “Awaken” plot sounds like stuff that once starred the DTV likes of Lorenzo Llamas, Cynthia Rothrock, Oliver Grunier, Don ‘The Dragon’ Wilson, and a dozen more. That’s not even a cutdown.

Don’t get me wrong: I dig those silly martial arts type action pictures. We need another wave of them like we had in the early 90’s. Hell, you went to the movies…there’s a martial arts action picture; go to the video store, there’s two, be it Shootfigher 2 or The Next To Last Ninja. Know what I mean?

‘Awaken’ is not a remake. It’s a recycled soda can.

  9. NO! NO! NO! there was only one bruce lee therefore there is only one enter the dragon how dare they (warner brothers) even contemplate remaking this film for a start there isnt anybody out there good enough to capture lees gracful but deadly style more than likely it would be cgi aided but having said that tony jaa(ong bak, warrior king) would probably be the only man i think who’s capable of pulling it off as he has no need for cgi or wires a tru heir to bruce lee’s unmatchable legacy so maybe it would work maybe it would’nt we will have to wait and see!

  10. Ok, there is ABSOLUTELY no way that this could ever possibly work. The problem is that, when it came to martial arts, Bruce Lee moved like no other human being. He was faster, smoother, and more focused than any kung fu star in history and even today, at least in my book, holds that record. No other martial artist could possibly manipulate their moves at his rate of speed and have it all look seemless. Instead, I can assure you that what we will get will be SEVERELY aided by visual effects or just plain seem inferior to the style of Bruce Lee, and therefore will undoubtedly lose the original’s magic.

  11. AS long as David Caradeen isn’t in it, I’m cool with seeing this tribute film. Hopefully it’s done with taste and integrity, if it’s to pay homage to the best martial artist ever!

  12. this is just bullshit. gone too fucking far now. Awaken The Dragon?!?
more like Insult To The Dragon. at least the poxy 80s flick The Last Dragon had an original if not terribly good story. butt this POS sounds just fucked…

  13. I wouldn’t call this a remake. Actually, this looks like it has elements of Iron Monkey, as well (the cop vs. renegade monk bit). Might be interesting. Looks like someone looked into Shaolin martial arts as well and realized how deadly it is.

  14. Dammit, NO NO NO!!!! This does not sit well with me, it’s either the Big Mac I just ate or that feeling of a shitty remake stomping on the toes of a classic. Can’t know for sure after I take a huge shit and hear more about this.
