Jamie Chung Joins Dragon Ball Z

I am still not sold in the idea of a Live Action Dragon Ball Z movie in the least. Somethings just work great in one medium but don’t translate well into another, and no matter how “cool” the cartoon of Dragon Ball Z is, I personally just don’t see it translating well into a live action environment. But other’s do… so there you go.

We’ve already told you that Dragon Ball Z has cast Justin Chatwin (The Invisible, War of the Worlds) to play Goku and James Marsters (”Smallville,” “Angel,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) as the villain Piccolo, but not it seems they gone and picked up their Chi Chi (the love interest to Goku). It’s the SMOKING HOT Jamie Chung. Our friends over at IESB give us this:

Reality TV personality Jamie Chung (MTV Real World San Diego) has landed the role of Chi Chi, the eventual love interest to the lead character Goku played Justin Chatwin. Chichi known as Chi-Chi in the Viz manga, is the wife of Son Goku, and the mother of Gohan and Goten. She is often depicted as a sometimes nagging, but fundamentally well-meaning, who sincerely looks for her children and husband’s well-being even when their views clash. She and Goku first meet as children, and Goku promises to marry her, thinking marriage is a kind of food.

Well… at least I’ll watch the movie on mute if nothing else. Good grief that’s an attractive woman. Anyway… back to the movie. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying DBZ will suck, I’m simply saying my expectations are low that you can translate this into a live action flick very well. It might rule… but I’ll be VERY surprised if it does.

  1. I always thought this movie could be made but only by someone like steven spilbergh and starting right at the beging actors jet lei jackie chan and the guy and girl from wandering dragons or knives was it someone get hold of steve s and tell him to get a move on its still not to late just think how many sequals you could have. You know it makes sense.

  2. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so)WOW, THAT GIRL IS SO BEYOND HOT..GOKU YOU LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY ..JAMIE CHUNG CAN I HAVE OUR NUMBER?

  3. ok…just because 90% of anime characters LOOK ASIAN and are given ASIAN NAMES, it doesn’t mean they’re ASIAN. The actual character is usually white. if you’re truly a DBZ fan, you’d know that.
A DBZ movie…well it’s not going to be cheap, so i can see why their casting isn’t SO great at the moment. they probably don’t have the backing for the movie yet.
and having JAMIE CHUNG as CHI-CHI, well, she’s not UGLY, so it would make sense. CHI-CHI wasn’t HOT, she’s just suppose to be motherly, that’s all. BULMA was the show-off.
if this movie EVER MAKES IT OUT, i truly hope it’s done before “the AVENGERS” movie by Marvel comes out.

  4. LOL, Jamie Chung is not that cute, I used to think she was but I could not get over the who cross-eyed look and that there are way hotter Asian females that don’t have “oriental eyes” that are crossed. Anyway, I totally agree with Deathkidx. A lot of live action movie adaptations of Japanese anime have been in the same boat… Speed Racer?

  5. I THINK THE HOLE IDEA OF A DRAGON BALL Z MOVIE WITH REAL PEOPLE IS STUPID!!!!!! IF IT AIN’T BROKE WHY FIX IT.I’LL WATCH IT JUST TO SEE HOW THEY FUCK UP A GOOD CARTOON.SORRY NOTHING AGAINST YOU Jamie Chung YOUR STILL HOT BUT I THINK U SHOULDN’T DO THIS BECAUSE IT’S A DUMB IDEA AND YOU KNOW IT. THEY SHOULD LET U BE THE VOICE OF CHI CHI INSTEAD..

  6. Maybe she is a good actress but she can’t pass as a highschooler. Justin Chatwin who is a year or so older than her looks younger than her they could never be a convincing couple it would look more like a hot for teacher thing. Jamie chung is just way too mature looking. Personally I think she could do a pretty good Mai she could most likely pull off the sexy assasin thing but not Chi-chi she will ruin the character.

Maybe I’m just being picky because I’m a fan of the series but this is the worst casting mistake they could make.

  7. Maxim readers–myself included–recently voted Jamie Chung “Hottest Woman on Reality TV.” Aside from her natural beauty(she rarely wears makeup) those votes were from a public who also appreciated her warmth, genuineness, and sense of humor. Dragonball Z is her first starring role, so let’s just give her a chance.

  8. Fuck I was okay with the casting up until they chose Jamie Chung as Chi-chi. I mean what the hell Chi-Chi is for the most part a conservative house wife. How the hell is Jamie Chung gonna play her? It is pretty obvious that she was only cast in this movie because she looks like a play boy model but that is not gonna cut it Chi-chi is a serious martial artist and not a big breasted bimbo. Yeah I know I’m being a harsh bitch but this woman has virtually no acting experience and to cast her in a movie like this when all she has proven herself to be is a MTV real world party girl is a huge dissapointment. Besides does she look at all like a high schooler? Uh no.

  9. @ Shinobi

Yeah Goku is from another planet, but at the end of the day DBZ is based on a japanese anime, which is based on a japanese manga, which is based on a Chinese legend(journey to the west)Son Goku should be portrayed by an asian. Also Superman is alien as well, but i wonder how fans would react if an indian or black guy was portrying him a movie.Funny how they knew to cast Chi-Chi as asian but Goku is a white guy!Even the producer Steven Chow(the guy who directed Kung Fu soccer)who’s a fan ,wanted there to be an all(or at least mostley)asian cast.

  10. Well, I use to be a huge DBZ fan. Seen the whole series all the way threw. While it’s no longer on my list of top fav animes, due to the fact that many better written anime series’ have come out since those days, it still holds a special place in my heart as an amazing action series unlike no other.

I remember hearing about the plans for a DBZ movie YEARS ago. It’s awesome to hear thats it’s finally going somewhere. But I’ve always felt unless it cost an insane amount of money it wouldn’t look right as a live action film and as a first film I don’t think they could get that much money. Now I find out it’s just a Dragon Ball movie, not DBZ. Now it seems more plausible. Dragon Ball was the first half of the series where Goku was a young boy learning how to use his powers, well before the insane “super saiyan” parts of the series durring the DBZ sagas. The old Dragon Ball series focused more on campy writing and less on insane action sequences.

But the cast so far are all young adults. So I’m guessing there will be a sequence at the beginning of the film with Goku as a little boy and then the rest of the film will be with him as a young man. Still leaning his true power, but still much more powerful then he was as a little boy. So as a first film on a not really huge budget this could work. It seems to be more of a mix of Dragon Ball and DBZ, taking place mainly somewhere in between.

But I fear it will be too grounded, also with a low budget, in the real world with a near complete lack of it’s signature other worldly feel the original series had.
DBZ its very much a Sci-Fi series with just about every element of science fiction showing up at some point or another. From time travel, to aliens, robots, space ships, space travel, and everything in between. Plus the amount of power each of the main characters are, at one point, capable of is god like.

Then theres they’re signature crazy anime styled hair, but I’m pretty sure they’ll due away with the hair all together. As much as I’ll miss it, I just don’t see how they could get it to look right in a live action movie.

The director has done 15 X-File episodes, but other then that he hasn’t done much else worth while. Nore has the adaptation writer. Ever since I saw Shaolin SocceR I always felt Steven Chow should direct the DBZ movie. That even on a small budget he could make it one hell of an unforgettable movie. Oh well I suppose. I won’t say much about the cast so far, cuz we’re being surprised more and more every day with nobody casts in films. Directors and writers too though.

I don’t know, really I’m half and half. I can see this being a complete bad idea just as easily as I can see it being something truly amazing. I think it’s just too early to tell. Hopefully we’ll get a nice little surprise trailer next spring. we’ll just have to wait and see.

    1. i hope this film does go well when its released because it looks risky straight off the bat. DB as an anime went well and then DBZ really raked in the fans. But when they made GT the new writers went back the the DB style of story and that was about the time where it all crashed =S If the live action was of DBZ it would probably go better. so heres hoping that this film goes well to start with so they can make a sequel.

  11. I was about to comment on how they are casting a non-actress with no performing background other than being on a reality TV show. The reason why they are casting her is because she has a fine butt, firm breasts and wears mascara well.

The idea is that Dragonball Z fans would not mind seeing her in tight leather pants. From John’s reasoning, if I, too, rented this on DVD, I might hit the mute button too…but for an entire different reason. I might even hit the 2x button or skip chapter by complete accident…

  12. @ bjon

Goku is an alien, so race shouldn’t be an important thing in terms of casting. Also the earth on the DB universe isn’t the same as ours. In the other hand out of all races i guess goku could resemble an asian or just a coucassian with black hair. I think i’ve seen people with more asian looking eyes in the series. Besides anime characters next to never look asain. Just throwing my 2 cents.

  13. The casting for DBZ looks confused. They couldn’t get the main character to be asian, yet they picked his love interest who is.

I’m unhappy with the casting calls for this movie regarding the main characters.

As a side love interest, Jamie Chung, I have to say is cute.

  14. I LOVE DBZ and I was very excited about a live action version until the first casting announcements came in. And then I just HAD it. the WORST casting EVER. Casting is SO essential. It is SO important. And they go and cast a white guy to play an ASIAN character. Gonna suck.

  15. ……after seeing those speed racer pics and lookin at the cast…..i have absolutely NO faith in this film. Thats saying alot because i love me some dragon ball z. Shes not even an actress, real world san diego is her reference.

1st transformers, then the speed racer pics, now this!! damn u hollywood!! u might as well rape me now….bastards. john u have the full right to say this will suck. keep japanese made shows in asia, dont let stupid americans fuck it up…

oh but this chick is hot as hell
