Katie Holmes turns down $2.3million to star in Batman Begins Sequel

The first lady of Scientology used to rank among my more interesting actresses in Hollywood. No, I didnt think Katie Holmes was overly outstanding, I just liked her quirky charm and I find her terribly hot. Then Tom Cruise ebay’d her soul, and the rest is history.

So to see her do such a mediocre job in Batman wasn’t surprising, but disappointing that they didnt do MORE with her. Maybe they tried. But since I wasnt too trilled with her in Batman Begins anyways, I wasnt to distressed to read this on MSN Entertainment today:

Katie Holmes has turned down a $2.3 million deal to star in the ‘Batman Begins’ sequel.

The actress, who was expected to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes alongside caped crusader Christian Bale for ‘Batman: The Dark Knight’, has pulled out because of “scheduling conflicts”.

Rumours have already circulated that Katie has been replaced by ‘Wedding Crashers’ actress Rachel McAdams for the comic-book adventure, which will star Heath Ledger as The Joker.

I think Katie’s “scheduling conflicts” were a direct result of the $2.3million that she was offered for the role. In a movie this big, I would have thought a bigger paycheque was in order, but this is in Holme’s tax bracket. Perhaps she wanted more. I wonder what shes getting paid to be in a Queen Latifah movie.

Other rumours include troubles related to being a tabloid topic and her contraversal faith to Scientology.

Now would a different actress in the role of Gothams hottest DA make the role any different?

My only fear is that they will write in that the new actress is a different person (instead of replacing Katie’s character) instead of playing off that “I have known you since we were kids” angle that grounds Batman so effectively. IMDB lists her as only a “voice” of Rachel Dawes, so it sounds like this is where they are going with the character despite rumours saying they will replace Katie, not Rachel Dawes.

But we all know IMDB can be unreliable BEFORE a movie comes out.

  1. Didn’t Katie Holmes used the same excuse for not doing ‘Factory Girl’…? She said she had to do promotion for Batman Begins and could do Factory Girl, while the Batman himself had in that same period the lead role in three films.

Is Scientology selected in wich films she can or cannot star?

  2. I don’t agree that it’s fair to say that she turned this down because of the money. I doubt she’s stupid enough to really think people will give her bigger dollars if she hasn’t really “done” anything substantial. I’m of the idea that this could actually be a scheduling problem.

  3. Ok, I’m comfused. On the 26th Sharon said that Chris Nolan was just going to strait up replace her with another actress. Guessing it was just a rumor.

But anyway. Her turning down this deal is music to my ears. It just proves she didn’t give a rat’s ass about the Batman franchise or her character in the first place. Was just a make some quick cash of an acting gig for her. I hate when actors don’t take the movies there in seriously. She just felt like a fill in anyway so Bruce could have a love intrest of some sort.

Hopfully someone better will replace her, someone who actualy cares to make the Dark Knight a good movie. But even if they too turn out to be just as bad as Holmes, the love fling of the moment isn’t what makes this new Batman series so awsome.

  4. i agree jay jessica biel is one of the baddest white women in cinema. she is easy on the eyes and she is a good actress. she was good in the illusionist (great movie, by the way) and she can pull it off without being too cute. and yea jay, whoever the female lead is, the joker is gonna kill her…

    peace…

  5. Racheal Mcadams is rumored to be in everything.

She was rumored to be in Superman Returns…
She was rumored to be in Ironman…
and now she’s rumored to be in The Dark Knight.

I sure do wish the rumor-mill would grab ahold of a new name to bandy about. I like her and all and if she gets cast, I’ll support the decision. But seriously, it seems like if there is a movie in development, invariably her name gets brought up.

And since she gets brought up all the time I’m gonna say Jessica Biel again. She skews a little bit older and more mature than Racheal does for me. Plus, like I’ve said a million times, they could put her in everything as far as I’m concerned.

    mmmmmmm… jessica… (drool)

Also, I think she’s talented. Even though I thought Katie did a fine job in Batman Begins I do think Jessica is a better actress and I believe she could pull of an assistant DA far better than Katie did.

Since everyone is saying it’s just a glorified cameo anyway, does anyone else think that means she gets the business end of a knife, courtesy of the Joker?
C’mon people, I know I’m not the only one that thinks this is going to happen.

  6. As I read it, Holmes didn’t “turn down” the role, they just didn’t give it to her. That was a few days ago. Now suddenly there is “news” that she has “turned down” the role because of contract negotiations. Methinks Holmes’ PR people is working hard to salvage their client’s reputation. Holmes doesn’t HAVE a movie career except for Batman Begins. It makes no sense that she would turn it down. I tend to believe the studio wanted to replace her, and aren’t contradicting this report about her turning down the role because they’d rather see it die and go on merrily with their new actress. Personally I’d prefer it if they didn’t give Bats a romantic interest. It’s so forced.

  7. Lemme get this right: they offered her 2.3 million. Not a bad price considering it’s Katie. Perhaps she wanted more? Well, since that was the peak offer it just demonstrates how the character of Racheal Dawes was either important to the new film, or, what they *really* think of Katie Holmes.

I thought she was fine in ‘Begins’. A bit too cutie-pie for an ADA, but not horrible as she’s made out to be. Actually…I’m actually for a new lady lead. Maybe since there is no ADA Dawes, there is now a character actually from the comics? The idea that they are looking at Miss McAdams (who is, BTW, a better actress than Katie…) is good news to me. Hey, if they get her and Cillian reprises a Scarecrow cameo, we may get a short RedEye reunion!

  8. With the exception of some lazy lack of apostrophies, I see no grammatical or spelling errors.

Jason, you need to make a “dont care”, “dont bother” “dont worry about it” check.

Its a blog. there was nothing wrong with the post.

  9. The only reason this is a rumor is because a few days ago on IMDB they had a poll asking who people wanted Katie replaced with and Rachel won by a landslide. Sure she rocks, but would she fit with this cast? I don’t know, but anybody’s better than Katie Holmes.

  10. Yay! This is damn good news.

Rachel McAdams is one of the few girls I really want to see play the part of Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight. Even though this is a rumor, I like it.

  11. Rachel McAdams is awesome, I dont care if she plays Dawes or someone else, I think this is great news. She is so good at playing the “friendly trusting sweetheart” but she also displays good range. She is one of my favorite actresses and will improve an already impressive cast for the Begins sequel.
