Ongoing Spider-Panned Reviews

Another Spiderman 3 review for you kiddies! This one is from the Associated Press Via Yahoo. For the full review, go to yahoo; but I present to you the following excerpt:

Spidey the Third feels like an even greater letdown following Spidey Part Deux, which was the rare sequel that surpassed the original. “Spider-Man 2” was driven by a strong story and compelling character development, and didn’t just feel the need to dazzle us with elaborate effects (though the effects did indeed dazzle).

Here, Raimi overloads us with more — more villains, more supporting characters and more plot lines — spread out across more time. People and threats come and go, and the narrative feels scattered. (Raimi crafted it with his older brother, Ivan, and veteran writer Alvin Sargent, who also co-wrote part two.)

More buzzkill Spiderman news. I am pumped to see it this Friday just so I can review that damn thing. The common thread through all the reviews seems to be the complaint that too much is going on in the film. This is what we worried about, and It is what I will be on the lookout for when I see the film.

I will admit that my sails are quite deflated to see this movie now, but I will try my best to enter the theater arena with an open mind. I want to enjoy the movie and hope I end up loving it. I also hope for world peace and a pony named Laredo.

International friends please keep us updated as you see the film and we can compare reviews together.

  1. i saw it and loved the movie i loved venmon it was just my kind of movie i loved the dark side of peter its my fav spider man movie so far.

  2. I just got back from visiting japan with a few friends and it just so happens that we went while the film was released on tuesday, we werew there on april 26th and we were planning on leaving on may 1st, but, what do you know?…to our surprise we heard spiderman 3 was coming out tuesday may 1st, so we went and saw it. A friend of one of my friends who lives there (dont ask me his name or the town we were in, please! I can hardly pronounce english names!) hooked us up with some vip tickets from his work, he is a very well known programer for a high-tech video game software company, so we said HELL YEAH!, we can wait a few more days and stay for the release of spidey the third. Let me tell you, it was awsome with all the effects and action, but the acting was less appealing that the last 2, the villains just seemed to be driven more by deppression than anything else and of course this movie is way too damm long!!! I mean holy crap! It almost seemed like Sam should have made spiderman 3 with the first two villains and next year spiderman 4 with venom alone! I think they tried too hard to squeeze so much action and dramatic character changes in just 2:20 hours, not to mentioned the whole movie felt like it was rushing towards the main scenes and that made it very predictable so it sounds like the dvd will be full of deleted scenes and alternate endings. Again, the movie was awsome and well worth your money, but when you go see it there in my home usa, please go in the theater expecting a fun time and dont try to be a critic, this spidey guy is our favorite for being fun to watch, he is not a character that requires a drama actor but a down to earth funny actor like Tobbey. Greetings from japan folks and we will see you soon!!!

  3. With all of this bad press around it, anybody gonna change their box office predictions? I just don’t feel anybody except internet folk buzzed about this movie. It’ll be a hit for sure, but I just don’t feel a buzz when I talk to friends about it.

  4. I saw Spider-man 3 the moment it opened here in the Philippines. I even got the tickets a week earlier. Yeah, I guess I have to agree with the review right here. There’s just too much in the film that everything feels so disconnected.

It starts off really fresh, on a really light side. It picks off where Spiderman 2 ended, the credits give the flashbacks and high points of the first 2 movies.

I wasn’t impressed on how Sandman was brought to screen. It just felt too animated, and the way his character ended was just dull and really cheesy.

I had nothing against Venom, I think Topher Grace nailed it but it was a big letdown on how shallow his character motivation was and that VENOM arrived an hour and 40 mins into the movie. Like the fact that Sam Raimi really didn’t want Venom in the movie, I guess I felt that. Besides Venom looking really fantastic, I just felt that there was something profoundly stupid at how his character was motivated and moved

Spiderman 3 was just long and I felt that some scenes just had to be cut. There were too many unnecessary scenes that tainted the narrative. They just didn’t move the story forward.

I was laughing the entire time Peter Parker turned to Black Spiderman. His hair was like Peter Petrelli and he had these really bad faint “guyliners” just like Pete Wentz. I guess the Peter’s of the world are really EMO.

Bryce Dallas Howard was just perfect as Gwen Stacy. The screen lights up whenever she’s around walking around in her perfect blonde hair. But again, she felt so unnecessary in terms of character. She just appeared flat and was there to create tensions between Peter and Brock, and Peter and MJ.

How do I even begin with Kirsten Dunst. Let’s just say that she really sucked ass at being MJ. Harry Osbourne had his crucial moments and the aerial battle with New Goblin and Spiderman is just nailbiting.

The extras were too excited whenever Spidey’s around. You just wanna shoot them for clapping too much. Stan Lee’s cameo was perfect. Bruce Campbell’s cameo was absolutely funny. Sam Raimi’s right on for bringing him onto this movie.

    =========

I still prefer Spiderman 2. But i think box-office wise, Spiderman 3 is just gonna skyrocket. Here in the Philippines, May 1 is a national holiday. And everyone just went on to see Spiderman. The lines were so long and some screenings were sold out. I think Spiderman on IMAX (we only have ONE IMAX theatre here) is sold out until 3 weeks or a month. I should’ve reserved earlier.

  5. Boston Globe critic put it nicely…

“You need a doggie bag for a blockbuster like this.”

Chicago Trubunes sums it up as..

“While generally entertaining, “Spider-Man 3″ is like a boomerang in a basement. It bounces all over the place, occasionally hits something solid and never settles in”.

I agree to both based on what I heard so far…

  6. I watched it last night and it is awful. It has too many villians, the dance sequence is just stupid and Cj jonah jameson acts all calm in this movie because of his blood pressure so i was pissed because it took away his yelling. When peter turns into venom the suit looks awesome but when peter is turning evil he basically turns emo. he has his hair over his eyes. when eddie turns into venom it looks cool except the voice is kind of lame and brock keeps revealing his face so you barely see venoms face and when eddie turns into venom he get fangs and when you see his face and he starts to talk the teeth are basically falling out of his mouth.
Plus this movie is way too long. after watching there is about 30 minutes you can take out

  7. Ok review. But still, I don’t care. I’m still going to see it. Been waiting to see a movie version of Venom for years. I’m pretty sure I’ll love this film. I’ll injoy Spidy, black costum Spidy, Sandman, the new Harry, and ofcorse Venom.

Even if it does feel like it’s allot of stuff in one film, most the time thats how the last part in a trilogy turns out. Look at Matrix 3, Star Wars 3, and the grand daddy of them all, Return of the King. And I loved all 3 of those films, Return of the King is still today my most fav film. I’m pretty sure this isn’t going to be another Batman & Robin just cuz theres 3 villians this time around.

I feel Spidy 3 is going to be an all out sit back and have fun popcorn movie and I’m ok with that. I love it when diffrent parts in a trilogy have a diffrent style from each other. The first 2 Spidy films were filled with good story telling and good character development with some good action and effects. Now part 3 will just be a stronger mix of all those.

I only hope Venom doesn’t die off for a better return in the future. Why to villians in comic book films about one main hero have to always die anyway?

  8. “Now everyone says the second was better the first, when all along people said the second sucked in comparison. I don’t trust any of these negative reviews. The trailers look incredible and more villains and more story I am very happy to see.”

I gotta agree with Blarney… I never listen to movie reviews, I hardly tend to agre… I’ll jus judge it myself friday.

  9. Saw it yesterday may 1, here in manila, Philippines. it’s a big let down , i should say. compared to the 1st 2. the pace is slow at times, the dialogue cheesy and tele-novela-ish especially at the supposedly tender moments. the fight scenes i agree are exciting and worth the price. But the aerial fight scenes of Spidey feels too perfect and CGI-ish. Spidey takes a lot of beating in this movie! Too many characters, too many extras, too much going on. Focus is lost but it’s a good movie despite the plot/continuity flaws (spidey mask off-and on miraculously) Mary jane is supposed to be a sexy character but Kirsten dunst (not sexy at all) does not do justice. However Bryce dallas Howard got Gwen Stacy right on the money. And may i mention Tobey looks bloated pre-symbiote and deathly thin while ‘possessed’. The jazzbar’s dance scene is peculiar because not even in comics Peter Parker actually has a talent in dancing. I can go on with more rants, but i expected too much, coming from spiderman 2. But it’s still a fun movie and it’s still gonna rake in hundreds of millions.

  10. Now everyone says the second was better the first, when all along people said the second sucked in comparison. I don’t trust any of these negative reviews. The trailers look incredible and more villains and more story I am very happy to see.

  11. Howdy, I’m in Japan and saw it last night.

I really enjoyed it. Always exciting, sometimes funny and the token love story is quite crucial to the plot so I didn’t mind it at all. Venom was cool, so was “bad” Peter Parker.
Only negative was the pacing sometimes, a few moments didn’t flow. But Otherwise very enjoyable.
    7/10

  12. Why the fuck does the rest of the world get to see this before us? Fuck that! This is America(and Canada), dammit, not some fucking third-world muddy-ass country! Give me my fucking movies back!!!

  13. I saw it last night in Germany and I really have to say, I tend to agree with this review.
While I think the picture is entertaining for the most part, it didn’t really do more for me.
The special effects are great and the fight scenes are very spectacularly staged, but by the 4. fight it kinda gets tiresome pretty quick.
    It’s just too much.
After the film I kinda felt like I had too much to drink. At some point you are filled up and drinking more doesn’t really increase your fun, it only increases the headache.
And the movie feels crowded and long. There’s Sandman, Harry Osborn, Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, Brock, the black suite, Venom, everything is cramped in there and I think they should have saved some stuff for the next installments.
Gwen Stacy doesn’t really get to do much except getting saved by Spiderman and make Mary Jane jealous and especially Venom is dealt with VERY quick. That was really the weakest point of the movie.
A lot of Venom fans are probably gonna be pissed and I can see why.

But nevertheless, the first two action scenes (Peter Parker vs. Goblin & Spiderman vs. the giant crane) are awesome and worth the ticket prize alone.

  14. Hi Guys,

I’m from Germany and I want to excuse my bad English in advance.
I saw the movie yesterday in one of the various previous that were shown.
Let me just say one thing:If u like the first two parts , you’ll definitely adore the third one.I assume , you’ll all have read enough reviews to know everything about the story and the CGI being fantastic(which is true) and therefore i just pick up several aspects of the plot in this review

    Spoilers ahead.

I’ve read mixed reviews about the third installment and I began to worry about a couple of things:

1)Is it packed with too many villains?
2)Is the ‘dance sequence’ that bad?
3)Is the story too soap operish(Harry losing his memory, ‘love triangle’ between Pete,Harry and MJ,..)
4)Too many coincidences in the beginning?

First of all, it would be a shame not to have at least 2 villains in the third part to get team-oriented fight sequences like the one we get to see in the battle royale(Choke-Punch sequence with Spidey,Venom and Sandman is great). Venom’s 30 minutes appearance was short and although he seems to be dead in the end, I rather see it as a large cameo and there will definetly be more of him in further movies.

The dance sequence that ,according to several reviews will split audiences, isn’t that bad or over the top, it’s actually pretty funny(‘Raindrops keep falling on my head’ being more misplaced). It is the way Raimi handles the hidden desires of a man , who wasnt able to have fun in life and have to live by the rules, being someone whose happiness depended on the happiness of other people.

The story is well-written and as it keep going you don’t bother about the so called coincidences in the beginning.Well, they are happening a lot of things in the first 20 minutes ,but I couldn’t have imagine a better way to set things up to evolve throughout the film.

    Sequences I Loved:

Is it just me, or why doesn’t anybody mentioned the kiss between Gwen Stacy and Spiderman, which was a exact copy of the kiss between him and Mary Jane in the first part( well, except for the rain ).

The French waiter scene. The comedy was well placed and not forced like in the beginning of the the second part.(Closet scene, meh) .Any suggestions what kind of character Bruce Campbell could play in the
    4th part( lab assistent of Dr.Connors,maybe?? )

The cooking/dancing scene between Harry and MJ.It was amazing to see how they relationship developed through the 3 movies. I mean, in the first part ,their relationship was uneasy and now they are happy with each other and under other circumstances they could be a happy couple.

    Sequences I did not like:

The first encounter between Sandman and Venom in a dark back alley. This was the most unrealistic coicidence in the whole movie.C’mon, how big is New York.I liked the way theirs first encounter was handled in the novel ,though.

MJ as a hostage(Nuff said.I heard Kirsten Dunst saying that a fourth, fifth and sixth part would be impossible without her.Well, she might be right.I mean, who could get abducted by the villain without her in the movie )

    All in all:

    Spider-Man 1: 7
    Spider-Man 2: 8
    Spider-Man 3: 9

  15. I thinl nomatter what this movie will be better than all superhero-movies in the last 3 years. Well i guess i will find out in 48 and a half hours

  16. “Spidey Part Deux, which was the rare sequel that surpassed the original. ”
Considering how boring and bland the first Spidey was that sure ain’t saying much.

I’ll bet Spidey 3 is no worse than the other two, it’s just now people have finally gotten over their pre-orgasmic love of the Spidey movies that seemed to come regardless of the quality of the films themselves, and have these peolpe have finally Woken the hell up! About damned time.

This is one franchise I can’t wait to see go away.

  17. Hahaa dear Lord……oh well, I’ll be able to see the full damage in glorious IMAX, at least. That’s a plus, right? But then again, do I really want to see Corgan Dunst on a seven story screen? Yikes!

  18. I think it’s good that we’re going in with lessened expectations; i might end up loving it. I enjoyed X3 a lot the first time i saw it with a packed house so anything is possible.

I just wish critics would stop piling all the blame on Raimi. They tend to forget that it’s the people behind the scenes that are making most of the stupid descisions.
