I thought Billy Bush's editorializing after some awards was very inappropriate and really po'd me. Particularly when he dismissed just announced winner Cate Blanchett as "just imitating a man" and not really acting.

Atonement is a fine well crafted film (one I will buy on DVD) but is just not in the same class with No Country for Old men or There Will be blood. That There will be Blood wasn't nominated for Director and score is astounding to me. Atonement is the safe choice for film goers who like their movies epic and pretty in a conventional way. No Country for Old Men and There will be Blood are more challenging and visionary in their scope.

When a company rewards an employee for excellence, are they patting themselves on the back now too?

Just sayin.

It's a shame Grindhouse is nowhere on any of these lists.

As far as awards go - I don't really care, as people have said before, it's Hollywood patting itself on the back most of the time, and these awards, in the grand scheme of things - don't mean shit.

I never cared for awards. They don't prove a film is amazing to me because I've seen plenty of Oscar and Globe winning movies that just seemed meh to me. You can tell which movies that are going to be nominated every year anyway.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Atonement---------------I thought Transformers had a fucking amazing score, was that even nominated? No.
I would like something different for a change.

And after seeing There Will Be Blood this weekend, I cannot imagine anyone beating Daniel Day-Lewis. That is one of the greatest performances I have EVER seen. EVER.

The best thing about this is that Atonement's win here guarantees it will NOT win the Oscar. Hope springs eternal!

And I was a little underwhelmed by Sweeney Todd, but anytime Depp wins an award is cause for celebration in my camp. Good for him.

Rodney-- there's a darn good reason why Ellen Page didn't win...or anyone else in her category. There was Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose, which was neither a musical nor a comedy. It was a bio-pic about a singer/preformer, and thus, had "music" in it. Kind of like a few years ago with Walk The Line and Ray. Not comedies, not musicals. Just a good, well crafted bio-pic about musicians.

But it did make me feel better when Bill Bush from Access Hollywood lightly noted this after Cotillard was announced as the winner.

And it was a show that lasted less than an hour.

As to what winners will travel on to Oscar, I definitely see Javier Bardem being nominated for an Oscar (and being a heads on favorite) ; I also expect nominations for Cate Blanchett, Daniel Day Lewis ...and among the best pic noms will be "the big three": No Country, Atonement and the current flavor of the month, There Will Be Blood. (Note: I think Juno will be among them as a dark horse of sorts. The fifth film...3:10 To Yuma

Sweeney Todd -? It pains me to predict this, and I want to be proven 100% wrong. Aside from maybe these three categories: Costume, Makeup and Art Direction... Oscar for Todd will be a bust out.

*****

AS to "losers" making us want to see the film...well, I think more folks will seek out Juno if they have not already done so. Also, a specific non-winner, Kathy Heigl for her TV series work on Grey's Anotomy? That snub will only increase the audience for her new film (27 Dresses) opening soon....and ...the Oscars will at least have her invited as a presenter...if they don't give a surprise nom for her work in Knocked Up.

BTW, the Oscars better go on if the strike is over or not, and Jon Stewart better not be replaced by the folks from Reelz, not that I dislike Chi-Lan Lieu or anyone there...and Ryan Seacrest is doing the new Amercian Idol season, so we are safe there.

I don't care if a movie doesn't win a bunch of awards. If it is getting a lot of praise from critics and movie goers, I would go and see it. I love lots of movies that didn't win any awards (except maybe for technical things like special effects). The award shows to me are just people in Hollywood patting each other on the back. Now if a movie received a lot of nominations in the Raspberry Awards...I would probably skip it ;).

I saw Atonement over the weekend and thought it was "meh". Not bad, but not at all worthy of best drama, IMO. No Country for Old Men was much better, and I have yet to see There will be Blood.
