Conan Meets Zombie – A Remake?
It looks like Rob Zombie might be setting himself up to take over a remake of conan the Barbarian.
MovieHole says:
According to Bloody Disgusting, Zombie is taking meetings with Nu Image and Lions Gate, the dual shingles behind the relaunch of the “Barbarian”, about possibly being the man to give audiences their first Schwarzenegger-less “Conan” movie (Does this mean Danny Trejo’s in with a chance to play the sword-yielding hero? Yes, Conan has muscles… just not sure about those tattoos).
I grew up watching Conan movies on Sunday afternoons when they would air on TV and at my friends house who had hundreds of movies taped poorly on a VHS. So to see someone OTHER than Arnie throwing around that sword seems odd. I am not even going to get into who they could get to play Conan.
But Hollywood seems to be out of ideas, and not EVERY movie can be about a comic book, so they are reinventing the old ones. Zombie’s adaptation of Halloween was met with mixed reviews. I wonder if they will change everything for a new feel of Conan or will the silent warrior stand proudly in the midst of the bodies of his fallen attackers.
I am all for a new Conan movie. I think those epic medieval movies that DONT star dragons and noble knights deserve a comeback. Next stop BEASTMASTER!

Gah. I’d like a new Conan movie, but not a remake. Rob is a decent director, and I loved the Devil’s Rejects, but I wish he’d do more original films. Give the remakes a relax.
Oh please, for the love of God, give this franchise over to that Rob Zombie. Even if you think the guy is a half decent filmmaker (which I personally don’t — I’ve hated every film he’s had a hand-in, including the double-plus bad Halloween remake), he’s just not the right guy for this.
Let Zombie do a remake of ‘The Stuff’ or ‘Ghoulies’ or something, but keep him away from Conan.
Whoops. First sentence of my post should read “Please, for the love of God, DON’T give ..”
Better go have my first cup of coffee.
I couldn’t disagree more. I’m a big supporter of Zombie’s and I think his films have only improved during each new wack.
Conan would not be a remake, this is a comic book movie and there is tons of Conan stories to work with.
A new Conan franchise would be great, hell I would love to work on that project.
Zombie is a great choice for this world. Zombie does not hold back and loves to sling as much at you as possible to get a reaction. The world of Conan is savage, brutal and hard – why else would you call him a barbarian. Zombie will be able to take those grusome images and put them on screen. Not just the violence but the sex as well – let’s not forget, what a barbarian wants he takes!
Zombie is also a fan of fantasy and magic which plays a big part in Conan’s world. I feel that he would do a great job of creating good characters both hero and villan, monsters and mystics. Plus he would paint the screen with blood and action which is exactly what needs to be done.
Clearly we disagree on Zombie’s directing talents, Brad, which is fair enough.
But he’s still a horrible choice. What flick has he done that has fantastical and magic elements? I’m sure he’d be able to put some gruesome elements on screen, but unless Conan is a white trash serial killer who tortures his victims while 70s Southern Rock plays in the background, he really hasn’t done anything that would lead me to believe he could bring the Hyborian Age to the screen.
Conan is a Sword-and-Sorcery epic at its core, and while it is violent, it’s not violence that motivates or drives the story. I just don’t think that Zombie’s ability to ’shock’ the audience with gruesome kills or titty shots is a good fit for a new Conan franchise.
I’d say don’t give it to Zombie, but instead give it to Tarantino. Hey look at Kill Bill – he can do action. Just hire Woo Ping for the stunts.
After seeing Halloween, i was left a little hesitant with Zombie’s “vision” as a re-make artist. I am sure he will give it the grime and dirt it needs, but his action sequences still need improvement. And please, if you talk to him, tell him not to do CGI gore anymore. They looked terrible in The Devil’s Rejects, which was, otherwise, a cool movie.
A new article on Bloody-Disgusting states now that Zombie’s NOT doing Conan now, as he’s moving on to do a movie called Tyrannosaurus Rex next, and no, it has nothing to do with dinosaurs.
Other directors that are up to direct Conan though, include Neil Marshall and Xavier Gens.
