Destro Re-Cast!?

By Doug - February 11, 2008 - 14:19 America/Montreal

New-DestroStrange news out of the G.I. Joe camp this morning. It appears David Murray was unable to get his papers in order, and will not be able to enter the U S of A. Because of this, the studio had to give the role to someone else. OUCH!!! We get the scoop from our friends at IESB:

The IESB has received breaking news, a last minute change has been made to the G.I. Joe cast – Who to play Destro. A devastating blow has been dealt to David Murray, the actor set to star as Destro in the new G.I. Joe film. Seems he had unforeseen problems getting into the United States and wasn’t able to get a work VISA in time for the film’s start date of Wednesday February 13th.

Studio sources say Murray is a phenomenal actor with a great body of work and are disheartened that he was unable to get his immigration issues in order before the film was set to start shooting. Well, although the higher ups were dismayed that Murray would not be able to play the role, what’s a studio to do other than re-cast? Paramount Pictures has confirmed, the actor will no longer be in the film, instead they have given the role of Destro to Chris Eccleston.

Well, I know one man that is going to be drinking tonight. Holy rat heads Batman! I cannot even imagine how insanely bummed out the actor must be at this moment in history. If however, G.I. Joe is garbage…..could this be turned into good news? Will this unfortunate turn of events actually prove to be beneficial for Mr. Murray? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Chris Eccleston has been on Heroes and was Dr. Who for a season. He actually looks a bit more like Destro and has a decent resume for this sort of film. If a replacement had to be found; I think a good one has been obtained. International friends, I have not seen this man act in Dr. Who and/or Heroes. If any of you could please fill us in on your thoughts regarding this man’s abilities as a thespian – it would be greatly appreciated.

G.I. Joe begins filming this week and we will be following it closely; like a watchdog guarding the infant of our beloved master.

Eccleston is a brilliant actor… he was great in Doctor Who I really missed him when they swapped to David Tennant, although I think in the long run he makes a better Doctor, cause he’s more eccentric :)

Either way, Eccleston was the bad guy in the Nic Cage version of Gone in Sixty Seconds and he pulled that off pretty dam well too…

Heroes, well he was good in this show, but should have got far more screen time.

I think he’d be a good choice for the role.

    My 2c worth anyways,

    Matt

  2. kanthan says:

I have seen him here on some british drama shows and he is an awesome actor with great intensity. A really scary guy as well in some of his earlier roles.

  3. Rodney says:

He was also in 28 days Later. Very gruff and stern in that film. A lot bolder than his fun loving Dr Who or his Little Bit crazy Invisible man role on Heroes.

  4. probitionate says:

What’s he like? Search out ‘The Second Coming’. The man’s got the goods.

  5. Karl Hungus says:

Eccleston is indeed an excellent actor, I took first notice of him in 28 Days Later and The Others, he never really fails to give a decent preformance, so this is pretty decent news. He deserves to be famous.

  6. Phil Gee says:

My little brother is going to lose his mind when i tell him that ‘The Doctor’ is going to be playing Destro. He thinks Eccleston should be in everything.

  7. Grave says:

This re-cast is good news for those that love Destro. And yea I can see him as Destro a bit more. However, the studio has to re-cast everyone else too b4 this movie is even watchable because it like the old saying…

“You can put gold on shit but, it’s still shit.”

  8. Gordon Shumway says:

In both those shows he made potentially stupid and outlandish dialogue sound plausible even believable.

  9. Joseph says:

    Eccleston is an excellence choice.

  10. Eccleston is a good choice for replacing…with all due respect…an actor I nver heard of.

To show you how good an actor Eccleston is? He’s done a ton of work that is so well done that you forget, or don’t know that it is him. To me, that’s an actor.

And yes, he does have a slight facial resemblense to Destro, doesn’t he?

  11. slybri says:

Eccleston is bad ass. Check him out in the first Elizabeth movie, where he plays the evil Lord Northrup. The dude can be intense. He was also a great Dr. Who.

  12. RonSalon says:

    Slybri hit it dead on!

  13. Herby says:

I have never been a big G.I. Joe fan. But I am a Doctor Who Fanatic. Chris Eccelstien was a supurb Doctor (Especially in “The Empty Child and “The Doctor Dances” episodes), he is a great actor, and just on this news will have me lined up when G.I Joe premiers

  14. pendragon00 says:

I thought second coming was a bit poor but still Christopher Eccleston was damn good in it, as he always is.

Im not happy about him being in this movie, he is FAR to good for it

  15. THUORN says:

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

nothing against Murray, but Christopher Eccleston is great… Not only is he the best DR. ever. BUT HE IS THE BEST DR. EVER! lol

seriously for a “last-minute” change this is very sweet. and now i actually have some interest in seeing this mess in the making.
