G.I. Joe Casts Cover Girl

By Doug - February 6, 2008 - 12:53 America/Montreal

Karolina-Kurkova-016Well it looks like another casting for the G.I. Joe film has been made, and it is another model. We get the news from moviesonline:

Today IESB has revealed who will play Cover Girl, the object of every Joes affection. The role is apparently going to be filled by Czech super model Karolína Isela Kurková. She is best known as a Victoria Secret Angel but has since been trying to break away from modeling to work in film. So that is why we are seeing her in this role.

The rest of the cast includes Dennis Quaid (General Hawk), Channing Tatum (Duke Hauser), Arnold Vosloo (Zartan), David Murray (Destro), Sienna Miller (The Baroness), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Heavy Duty), Said Taghmaoui (Breaker), Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Rex) and Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow) in the live action G.I Joe directed by Stephen Sommers set to be released August 7, 2009.

Betty and Veronica, Mary Anne and Ginger, Scarlet and Lady J. These are the female pairings that have caused us to choose “either or” since we were kids. They are yin and yang, one should not exist without the other. I certainly hope Cover Girl is not going to take the spot of Lady J in the movie. This would piss me off almost as much as the fact that Roadblock is not in the movie. Lady J throws futuristic spears for crying out loud! At least it makes sense to cat a model for the role of Cover Girl, but I hope Lady J has not been dumped for the sake of adding eye candy.

I gotta say folks, I think I am officially and totally uninterested in this film. I will still see it, and hope for good things – but I would now put money down that it is going to fucking suck. It pains me to say it; I have been waiting for this film for over 20 years – but I cannot ignore the news any longer, this thing looks like it is shaping up to be a cluster-fuck, and that is unfortunate.

What do you guys think? Are you still holding out hope or have you jumped ship?

I pretty much lost hope the moment Steven Sommers was given the director’s chair. However, I did have a spot of hope with a couple of good casting choices. And now? I feel disappointed and have no excitement whatsoever for this film. I have a grave feeling that it is going to ultimately suck even if it does manage to have a handful of entertaining scenes.
The ONLY reason I’m still considering watching this is to see Ray Park play Snake Eyes.

  2. Grave says:

What?! NO COBRA COMMANDER!!! OH THATS FUCKING IT! THIS MOVIES ON MY SHIT LIST NOW! IM OFFICALLY MORE PISSED OFF THEN WHEN I HEARD FRANK WELKER WAS BEING REPLACED BY HUGO WEAVING! THEY TOLD US IT WAS GOIG TO BE COBRA VS JOES! WHATS COBRA WITHOUT COBRA COMMANDER! THATS LIKE A HE-MAN MOVIE WITHOUT SKELATOR! ITS NOT TOO LATE TELL THE COMPANY TO STOP PRODUCTION NOW!!!

  3. Eric The Red says:

I personally think Steven Sommer films are horrible, & I have given them chances. Van Helsing was terrible. But I would’ve given Joe a chance until I saw that Marlon Wayans was casted.

  4. Kristina says:

Nope nope nope. Unless she has no lines, I’m higly skeptical. Gisele Bundchen tried to act in Taxi, and failed miserably. Stick to puking up your food and leave acting to the big girls, sweetheart.

  5. Doug says:

    HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

  6. Meli says:

    LOL, Kristina. Nice comment.

I was worried about this movie for a while. I started reading the comics at issue #12 when I was in third grade. I grew up eating and breathing GIJOE. I didn’t care about Transformers, Thundercats, or He Man (ok…a little). I was all about GIJOE and, to a lesser degree, SGT ROCK. Then I heard that Larry Hama is onboard and has given the script his personal thumbs up. Even if the movie is crap, it’s Larry Hama approved crap…and that is good enough for me.

    This is Larry Hama: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Hama

LOL….well there goes my hope……no cobra commander, no roadblock, and pretty bad casting….not seeing this, it could’ve been fuckin badass if done right….so much potential ruined by stupid casting and production ideas…..fuckin hollywood….no balls

  9. Thos says:

This movie has *suck* all over it. Cover Girl was the MLRS (”Wolverine”) driver, right? WTF? The only casting pick I like is Ray Park as Snake Eyes, but that is not enough to make me want to see the film. No Cobra?! Gary Oldman needs to be Cobra Commander.

  10. Simple_Simon says:

Gary Oldman would be a great Cobra Commander. Who else could pull off a used car salesman turned global terrorist leader? My understanding is that we will see the rise of Cobra Commander, setting us up for the sequel.

  11. chris (the real one) says:

YES!!! Oldman as CC would be gold….but u know, hollywood doesnt knew what good ideas are….i can care less about any new news on this project….unless all the previous casting info is false…but life isnt that good

  12. Gordon Shumway says:

Destro sounds good, I always like the idea of hiring Iron Maiden members for acting :) The casting looks 50/50 between good and shite. Seriously G.I.Joe past me by, probably due to being from the U.K. Am I right that they called the cartoon Action Force here? presumably to relate to action man.

  13. It’s time for me to chime in.

I can see where folks would like Gary Oldman; I could se him as Cobra Commander- but then I also seen The Fifth Element, Sid & Nancy and Air Force One….

Sorry, Sir Doug, I cannot back you on this.

As for the rest of the cast thus far, Dennis Quaid is probably the least talked about actor connected to this project. I’ve never been disappointed in any performance he has given, even if the film he happened to be in was horrible overall (Cold Creek Manor) great and overlooked (Savior, Come See The Paradise, Innerspace) or right on (Big Easy, Rookie, Frequency)…great actor but for some odd reason, never a great box office draw. I haven’t a clue as to why. He’s also an actor who takes care of himself-he’s in his 50’s, but with a touch of makeup could pass for 35. Maybe that’s why he was cast…

Arnold Vasloo -last seen in Blood Diamond- is best known for Imotep in Summers’ Mummy films, the DTV Darkman and Van Cleef in Hard Target. I’m fine with his casting. Even if he plays another bad guy.

    I dig Sienna Miller…

As for this new addition, I’m willing to bet she has three to four lines tops in a two hour film. Some of her lines will be “Yes, Sir”, “I’m on it” and “Go Joe!” (okay, maybe not the last one; it would be a cheesy line for any of the actors) and she is this ‘Cover Girl’ character.

I hae never gotten into GI Joe as much as other people, especially Doug. I never watched one cartoon in the entirety. All I recall is GI Joe with the mean fist (or as Eddie Murphy would say, ‘The Kung Fu Grip’) so maybe…overall… I don’t really give a damn about this film and while Van Helsing was an overwritten, overproduced piece of fly ridden doggie doo, I could think of worse seasoned directors than Steven Sommers.

I’m going to wait to see some footage before I draw conclusions on if this is worth my time or not. You should too.

  14. DMgarcia says:

Why in the Hell would they cast a freakin 26yr old to play duke. The kid probably never saw an original airing of the show to begin with. I knew this movie would be made eventually but come on No Lady Jaye, Flint, or Cobra Commander. Hopefully 20yrs from now they’ll remake it properly.
