Spike Lee Wins Wexner Prize
It looks like Spike Lee has taken home one of the coolest awards I have ever seen! We get news of his plunder thanks to the professionals at Variety.
Spike Lee has nabbed the Wexner Prize, which carries a $50,000 purse and a silver sculpture in the shape of a hammer. The innovative artist award was presented to Lee, the 13th artist to receive the award presented by the Wexner Center Foundation.
Limited Brands founder and prexy Les Wexner called the filmmaker “a bold creative spirit who is unafraid to provoke and challenge us.”
A silver hammer is a mighty award indeed! How kick ass would this be on your mantle-place?! Spike Lee is a worthy recipient of this prize, he seeks to push the envelope and educate using film as a platform in which to preach. I grew up watching his films and always valued that he had an opinion and a vision for a better world.
I have yet to see When The Levees Broke, but from what my amigos are telling me – it is incredible. I need to get that one stat and may even try to get to it this weekend in celebration of Lee’s hammer win. Spike Lee is a storyteller in the vein of Aesop and we at the movieblog salute him.
good news for spike. even though i thought he deserved an oscar for malcolm x, this is still cool. when the levees broke was fantastic and it deserves praise.

There is another cool award given out every year in France, by some railway society for best film about trains. I can’t seem to find their website at the moment though…
This is awesome. If anyone deserves a hammer for a trophy it is Spike Lee, for he would wield it like a true warrior. It reminds of when Beta Ray Bill was given Stormbreaker in the Thor comics. Epic stuff.
I go to Ohio State University, home of the Wexner, and it is pretty awesome to have someone like this be honored by the university. In case you didn’t know, a couple of years ago Scorcese was given the same award.

I saw ‘When The Levees Broke’. In it, Spike Lee insinuates (via interviews), quite strongly that the government blew the levees up – hoping to drown the nearby inhabitants. Yeah, and 9/11 was in inside job. OOOFFFAAA!!
i dont think the thing about blowing up the levees was that strong….a few people he interviewed said they heard explosions and he noted a situation in the past were the levees were blown up

Spike Lee – – (1) a late 20th/early 21st- century movie director/producer who was the epicenter of hate-filled leftist rhetoric that contaminated the socio-political scene of his time.
(2) Spike Lee -(as in “you’re all Spike”) a term/phrase used to infer that someone or something is ridiculously over-rated.
