This is a great piece, but I wish there had been more justification of the second spoiler-defense: promotion. Specifically, trailers that, when see multiple times, clearly give away major plot details or amazing special effects.I understand the purposes of the trailer, but I think they can absolutely affect the movie-watching experience.

"Well then don't watch them."

I don't, but I'm surprised that so many people do so many times. Maybe I just have an above-average memory. Anyway, great vid.

John,

That was the BEST explaination and rational behind the much hyped 'SPOILER' debate.

Good work.

First on this whole Pirates 3 thing. As soon as the Internet Movie Data Base listed Rush as in the cast, there is no way anything said about Pirates 2 can be considered a spoiler. I already suspected Barbosa would make an appearance in #2 once I saw he was in #3. So the idea that this was a spoiler is rubbish.

On the other hand, I agree with your guidelines for when something isn't a spoiler anymore, except I would say the DVD should be out for at least a year instead of a few months. Besides that, great video.

this is where the internet is a bit of a mixed blessing in terms of movies.

I read an interview with joe dante today and he had a good point...he said that trying to give people a surprise at the movies is so hard now as every single facet of production is covered in depth so much that its no wonder people wind up disappointed so much as they know so much about the film before they see it that the film doesn;t hold any surprises.

i can really kind of see his point...you think about it back in the day you had a trailer and that was really about it....obviously there were magazines and making of books etc etc but it wasn;t like now where you are sitting at work and you can easily source a spoiler laden review of a script that hasn;t even been shot yet.

and while I asm guilty of ruining many films for myslef by being unable to stay away from spoilers and news and clicking on the link that i was warned not to if i didn;t want to have a film ruined for me..

but on the other hand the internet has been great for independant film and films that without this wonderful outsource may have never gotten the attention they have got so it is a blessing and a curse....

lets face it..the odds of the revelation that darth vader was lukes dad being kept a secret before its release in the internet age would be very slim.....

Zerks beat me to it. I remember the controversy and I remember everyone who had seen the flick said it wasn't a spoiler. Everyone who hadn't seen the movie yet agreed it WAS a spoiler. The day before the DVD is released and TMB announced a pretty big surprise ending of a film. Not relevant to the plot, but fits your definition in your video exactly. It affected the enjoyment of the movie for some people. And I don't think much of the marketing for P3 had been released yet at the time. And Geoffrey Rush was uncredited as well. He's still WAY down near the end of the page on IMDb.

I guess it doesn't really matter though since the movie sucked anyway.
