The Boys: The Movie

By Doug - February 21, 2008 - 12:21 America/Montreal

The Boys -1It looks like the comic book known as The Boys will be coming soon to a theater near you. We get the scoop this fine day from Variety via IESB:

Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s ultra-violent and darkly, darkly humorous comic book series has been picked up by Columbia Pictures, Variety reports. Ennis and Robertson, writer and artist, respectively, began The Boys in 2006 through DC Comics’ Wildstorm banner. Ennis made it very clear that this series was going to “out-Preacher Preacher” (Failing, perhaps, to understand exactly what it was that made Preacher such a great series) and the end-result was a series so over-the-top that DC felt uncomfortable publishing and canceled The Boys with issue six.

From there, the series was picked up by Dynamite Entertainment where it’s still running today. They’ve since gone back and collected the past Wildstorm issues into trades. It’s worth noting that the series features a lead character openly based on actor Simon Pegg. Since he wrote the introduction to the first trade and is obviously cool with his face being used, I’ll go out on a limb and say that he’s more likely than not already in talks to star in the film.

I have not read this comic book series but from what has been described, it certainly sounds like a winner. An ultra violent movie that features dark humor will suit me just fine thankyouverymuch. I know many of out readers are familiar with comic books, and I beseech you international friends; what are your thoughts on the comic book and do you think the story will lend itself to a quality film adaptation.

With Simon Pegg as the inspiration for the lead character, it would seem to me that a movie may have always been in the minds of all involved. This does not bother me at all, in fact it should make the transition to film quite easy. One thing is certain however, if Pegg doesn’t get the part he is going to be pissed! The likelihood of this happening are slim to none, but it’s certainly funny to think about.

We will be sure to keep you posted on this one, and I will try to get a few of my friends that are comic book gurus to share their thoughts on the matter.

This sounds great. I’m not familiar with the comic book series, but as far as I’m concerned, Over the top violence + Comedy + Simon Pegg = Success.

  2. The Boys skewers every superhero/comic book archetype beautifully. The Justice League/Avengers analog is a bunch of money grubbing sexual scumbags. The Teen Team has orgies and the Batman/Iron Man type has a proclivity that I won’t go into, but it’s hilarious. But the five main characters still manage to come off as likable.

I read the comic book up until about issue #12 and then dropped it because i just thought it got too stupid. It seemed like it lost the social commentary about the comics industry, and hollywood celebrity that made the early issues great, to instead just see how many gay jokes they can make about superheroes in one page.
I personally think it’s a bad idea to make this into a movie because it would be hard to have a 90 minute movie where it ’s making fun of a medium that 90% of the world dosen’t know anything about. Unless they are just going to do this like Wanted and keep the name for the movie but abandon the source material all together.

  4. Paul says:

Hey John, why did you turn off the comments in the Ben Stein interview? I took the time to transcribe some of Ben’s quotes so that I could fill in for the other side, and now that time is wasted!

  5. Jeff says:

Alright Doug, let me put it like this, in the first issue of The Boys, one of the lead characters drops his pants and makes a pretty busty teen down his manhood. Need I say more?

  6. chris (the real one) says:

this is prolly gonna be bad. i read the comic and there is no way in hell hollywood will allow half of what makes this series good be put into a movie.

theres a lil girl on the team who literally rips people’s faces off….and some villains put someones face on a pizza to lure them out…..and a member of a superteam cant stop fucking things…including a robot and a cat….yep, this is gonna be so toned down and changed i cant imagine it being any good, look what they are doing to wanted. if ur gonna change the comic, might as well not make a movie on it.

  7. JAMIE says:

NO WTF!!!! FIRST WATCHMEN NOW THIS!!?? CMON WHAT ABOUT JLA!!!!!! THIS IS WHY I HATE DC!!!!ILL TAKE SUPERMAN VS BATMAN BUT I STILL WANT THE JLA FILM!!! WHY IS IT THAT THEY CAN FUCK UP JLA YET THINK THEYRE GOIN GOT BE SO SO SUCCESFULL IN THESE STUPID ASS MOVIES!??
okay- if they cant do these films..why cant they do jla???? i just DONT GET IT
alls i want is a hint or hope or a somethign thatll tell me that there will be a jla film- and a good one like the one they were planning with the horrible casting

  8. Kristina says:

I’ve loved everything I’ve seen Pegg in(’cept Run Fatboy Run. Ugh, what a POS), so count me in.

  9. JAMIE says:

i swear man- if dc makes one more anouncement of another bullshit movie like- teen titans or some shit before jla i will personally go to the main DC comics building with a hammer and personally diddy kong hammer my way to the top floor and then set the rest on fire

  10. Chris says:

JAMIE, DC no longer owns the rights to the BOYS, they allowed Ennis to shop them to another publisher because they were going to pull the plug after issue 6. It is now with Dynamite, so going to DC and setting them on fire about how they allowed this to become a movie will do nothing.

  11. ALFREDO says:

I’m excited that they’re going to make this movie but I got a feeling that they might white wash it like they did Wanted.

  12. JAMIE says:

    @chris
oh! i didnt know that! thanx
oh okay then- DC will get of with a warning this time though…

  13. Ryan says:

Waaa Waaaa! I want a JLA movie! Waaa Waaaaa!

    1. The only decent JLA ever was the most recent animated one that began with Batman the Animated Series and took over a decade to build up with no universe reboots.

    2. They are going to make a JLA movie, but they want you to pay to see the various origin stories first. So at LEAST seven DC super hero movies before we see a JLA movie.

    3. Do you remember what happened the last time they did “JLA The Movie”?

    4. By the time they get round to making it, the Superhero Movie will have gone the way of the Western and the War Movie after there golden age in the fifties and sixties. No one decent will want to touch it with a barge pole.

    5. Watchman better than JLA, The Boys better than JLA.

  14. Will says:

The Boys is one of my favourite comics from the last 3 years and I cannot wait to see it on screen. I am a little worried though, I want them to stay faithfull to the original comics but they are so viceral & violent I cant see Columbia making a movie that nasty.
It is such a shame that one of the most original, dark and fierce comics will probably slip-by-unnoticed by the masses when it’s released on the big screen.

  15. CBear says:

I’m kind of divided about a movie based on “The Boys.”

Depending on the angle they approach it, I could see a mellowed-out version hitting the screen with a PG-13 or R rating, while still keeping some of the core elements that make the comic so great. This is likely what is going to happen, similar to what I am seeing with Watchmen.

At the same time, I really wouldn’t mind seeing a NC-17 or NR (Not Rated) version that does stay true to the comic source; violence, sex, drugs, blackmail, and even moral dilemmas and a love story. It would likely be a low-budget release (so cheesy special-effects), but I’d go see it anyhow.
