As I have said before, I am not familiar with this story but would love for you guys to fill us in. Do these character images do justice to the comic book characters, please share your thoughts?

My favorite character from this set is Rorschach, he has an old school super hero quality about him, and he has a trench-coat of mystery.

Doug I have said it before and I will say it again. I will fuckin send you a copy of this amazing Graphic Novel. Seriously.

I love this story and I love this graphic novel. Zack Snyder cannot ruin this story for me, as the story has already been told, but his telling of it is sure to be interesting. The thing about the graphic novel that is very unique is its bold use of color and its use of panels to convey mood and pace.

As far as Character costumes go, Rorschach’s “uniform” was the only one that could be considered “timeless”. The others would NEVER work on film. William “The Comedian” Blake is pretty dead on, but likely because, like Rorschach, it is capable of working on film.

Nite Owl does look a little bit too butch (He being the nerdy, spare-tire-carrying version of Batman) but Malin Akerman, I have said before and will say again is PERFECT CASTING. I never would have thought of her, and now cannot think of anyone but her for that part.

Did I mention I may have an opinion or two on this?

  2. ChrisP says:

Very well done. The characters aren’t EXACTLY the same as their comic book versions, but the design team did a really good job updating the costumes for the current market. Except for Rorschach, who looks totally the same. He was one of my favourite characters from the comic, along side Mr. Manhattan. Very nice.

  3. Karl Hungus says:

Rorschach looks absolutely spot on. The rest look pretty damn good too, while not exact.

  4. Klendathu says:

Holy shit, this is amazing. I still can’t believe that this movie is actually happening.

  5. Brian says:

These all seem to work as movie version of the comic characters. And hopefully the graphic novel will be released again to help promote the movie so that more people get a chance to read it. And will they squeeze the whole story into one movie?

  6. DEvonRoy says:

I always thought the costumes were suppose to look kind of dorky, since there are uncool versions of other superheroes. As the novel goes on and you get to know them is when these geeky characters actually become cool. So Some of the costumes are a little too cool I would say.

I think Zack Snyder was a poor choice for this adaptation.

  7. Paul says:

Ozymandias should not look like somebodies kid brother, but, other than that, I think they’re great.

  8. Brian says:

I’m guessing these are the younger versions of these characters, when they were in their prime.

  9. James G says:

Ozymandias looks like a sophomore at a boys school. WTF?

  10. Henry from Dallas says:

if anyone has this novel please send it to me

  11. dave says:

the nite owl costume looks way too batmanesque other than that I gotta say this one looks pretty cool

  12. Grit Jones says:

Dr. Manhattan is not shown. I want to see his blue penis.

  13. jimf says:

I have not read the graphic novel in a while…but the costumes do look very good. I concur that Ozymandis looks a bit young, but not complaints about the rest. I cannot wait for this one! (Please do not screw it up Zack Snyder…dont change the plot!)

  14. Kamish says:

Wish we could have gotten a glimpse of Dr. Manhattan, I’ll give these pics a B+. It will be interesting to see how the younger versions and older versions of each character stand up within in the story as far as their look and aging goes…Silk Spectre had a very sexy, transparent part to her costume, but we can’t see much with her long hair down over her shoulders. The Comedian is pretty much dead on as Rorschach appears to be, but hard to know with that lighting. Older Night Owl has a gut, so not sure which version he is in the pic, plus the suits a tad over done. Ozymandias seems to be the biggest departure look-wise, not what I was hoping for….

  15. calviin says:

Is Nightowl supposed to look like Batman?

  16. T-Dog says:

Wow first impressions are very strong! I love Nite Owls update, much cooler than the novels one (even if that does sound sacrilegious) Although I’m not entirely convinced by the look of the dude playing Ozymandias, but I haven’t seen him in action (I would have liked to have seen a smarmy Jude Law) The Comedian looks ace too.

    Colour me excited.

  17. calviin says:

Actually, altogether, the images don’t really excite me. They look generic. I suppose the characters will be more interesting than the outfits make them out to be.

  18. sdc sketchez says:

I agree with DEvonRoy that the characters in the novel were supposed to look dorky. They’re not superheroes, they don’t have any powers, they’re just supposed to be people who make they’re costumes at home and try and fight crime, and that was some of the charm of the story.

But i don’t think that would’ve worked for the movie’s benefit at all, people would see the trailers and not understand why their costumes looked like chincy Halloween outfits and not given it a chance.

But i disagree that Zack Snyder is the wrong guy for this role. He pwned 300, that movie is such a pitch perfect tribute to the novel, you can actually see the panels you remember reading as you watch the movie, there was so much attention to detail and the colour palette and staging and everything that makes him the perfect director for this movie.
Everyday on set he had all his books filled with panel to shot storyboards he drew himself, along with the graphic novel itself.

Even Alan Moore, co-writer of the novel visited the set and was blown away by the attention to detail and the level of fans that everyone working on the movie is.

So…i am really hoping this thing turns out awesome, but as always, remain cautious as not to cry in the theatre if it blows.

Also, i believe that in the story Ozzymandias’ balls have already dropped, so this casting does confuse me somewhat.

  19. Bishop says:

Did Alan Moore visit the set? I had thought only Dave Gibbons did…

  20. Bishop says:

Heh. Now that I think of it, Nite Owl’s costume reminds me more of The Tick’s ‘Die Fledermaus’. Hehe. Oh dear. Now I won’t be able to unsee that.

    Die Fledermaus. Ha.

  21. goodbar1979 says:

yeah it was David Gibbons…..as usual Alan Moore wants NOTHING to do with this adaptation…what an old grouch that guy is….i heard he told people/studios to send all the $$$ to Mr.Gibbons….im sure Dave is quite pleased with that :)

  22. wow, all my enthusiasm for this film just wend down the shitter. Ozymandias’ suit looks like Joel Shumacher had a hand in its creation, I don’t ever remember seeing a rubber suit in the novel

  23. Anthony says:

As a whole I think they all look good and relatively like the comic. But I think the colors are a little drab. The comic was much brighter on the colors. Here is looks like its trying a Dark Knight approach and making it more serious than it might need to be.

  24. dave says:

goodbar moore in not an old grouch it’s just that hollywood keeps screwing him hard on all thier adaptions of his work. I mean league of extrodinary gentlemen should have been called f**k Alan Moore. Don’t even get me started on from hell.

  25. bjon86 says:

Yea I just googled Ozymandias and yea that dude is just too mufuckin skinny to be playin him. But all the other stuff looks tight to me.

  26. nbakid2000 says:

On the first two pictures I was reminded of the 60’s Batman series and modern Batman.

Other than that, I have no opinion because I have never read the Watchmen series and know nothing about it.

  27. AjaxLou says:

They look pretty close. Excellent job, especially on Rorschach!

  28. Ides_of_March says:

Don’t know much about the back story of the graphic, but damn, Silk Spectre’s looks pretty sexy!

  29. Personally I think the character designs are incredible. I love the way this movie is shaping up — at least, the parts we’re getting to see… I’m sure Mr Snyder and his crew have several things already done that they’re keeping under wraps (other production photos on the blog were blurred, and they haven’t shown us what Dr Manhattan looks like yet!). Hats off to them.

  30. DarkKinger says:

I am really looking forward to this movie. Hopefully it will be good. It is great to finally see pictures of the cast/characters, but I won’t get my hopes up like I did for Spider-Man 3.

  31. dave says:

the real question is will the pirate 2nd storyline be in the film

  32. scoville says:

    Meh,

    They’re too young.

  33. bryan says:

Every one looks good except Ozymandias. He looks really dorky and nothing like he did in the comics. Was looking forward to see Dr. Manhattan the most. :(

  34. Nite Owl looks COOL! But is Nite Owl meant to look cool? Part of the charm of this character was that he was a nerdy guy… a bit fumbling and overweight. I’ve said before that I don’t care if there are many changes from the comic book, and I don’t care if their costumes change or whatever. All this is superficial stuff. But if you change something fundamental about the original character, then to me it doesn’t work. I’m judging this only from the pictures of course. And I’m judging THE PICTURE, not the movie. I’m sure Zach Snyder released these photos to see how people react, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

  35. Brian, WATCHMEN is never out of print so it doesn’t need to get released again. It’s always available in some store somewhere. If it had gone out of print, the ownership of these characters would automatically revert exclusively to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and I’m sure the company that holds Watchmen now would not allow that to happen. Just another one of those things that pissed off Moore about this whole thing.

  36. Kristina says:

I’ve never read Watchmen, so these pics don’t mean much to me, but Ozymandias looks really young. I hope they haven’t made the same mistake Singer did with Singerman Returns: casting way too young for the sake of cranking out multiple sequels.

  37. Kristina says:

And WHY does Ozy have NIPPLES on his SUIT?!

  38. Quinn says:

Overall. Love them all. Very excited about this film and glad Zach Snyder is at the helm.

I agree with many of the comments…nipples on costumes. LAME. But I’m overlooking that, this film WILL be incredible.

  39. Rob says:

FUCKING awesome. Except for, yes, Ozymandias, for all the reasons above, but hopefully he’ll redeem himself with ass-kickery in the movie.

  40. alfie says:

i hope some of these are flashback versions of the characters

nite owl looks a little to fit but the overall look is great…and ozymandias looks way to young….

doug you should read this book as soon as possible.

its a great story….so great in fact that heroes pretty much ripped off the climax of it wholesale. thats because heroes doesn’t have an original thought in its pretty but ultimately empty head.

I am very excited about this film.

  41. Shane says:

I love these pictures. I’ve waited so long for this movie!

What I like about the pics is that in a way you’re instantly reminded of other superhero films. And in a way, that was how you felt when you started reading Watchmen. Though you didn’t know the characters, the whole world felt familiar. You just understood it was a ’superhero’ world. As the story unfolds, you find the intricacy and history of this ‘world’ and how much it really doesn’t have much in common with the comic universes we know and love.

So if your first impression is “this doesn’t look like Watchmen, it looks like a Batman film”, that’s good. That’s how people should be going to the film and expecting. They’ll get something very different.

I for one like Ozimandias. I like all of them so far. Not identical to the comic, but they have all their personality. I can’t wait!

  42. Niall says:

I can’t believe this movie actually getting made. The novel is perfect. Without a doubt one of the best stories ever told. And how brilliantly told it is. I would have preferred Paul Greengrass at thehelm but we could do worse than Zach Snyder. DOUG NAGY GET YOURSELF A COPY OF THIS AND READ IT STRAIGHT AWAY!!! Im actually jealous of you. You get to experience the life-changing novel that is the Watchmen for the first time!

  43. everysence says:

I liked batman begins.. But this movie looks.. um lame. the costumes look like a failure like the one with arnold as the iceman..

  44. ALFREDO says:

The Silk Spectre looks incredible. I can’t get over how long her legs look.
