Jumper Continues Worldwide Box Office Plunder

By Doug - March 3, 2008 - 14:11 America/Montreal

It looks like Jumper is continuing to kick ass in international markets where it has just held the number one position for the third week in a row. We get news of its bounty from the legendary caves of Yahoo:

The sci-fi fantasy “Jumper” led the foreign box office for a third consecutive weekend, according to studio estimates issued Sunday. The movie, starring Hayden Christensen as a young man who can “teleport” around the world, pulled in $12.8 million from 44 markets; its total stands at $81.9 million.

I must admit, I am a little surprised. I found this film to be a let down, mainly because so much potential was there and it failed to deliver. To continue on the top spot for 3 weeks running internationally is a huge success for the film and I am wondering why its legs are so strong abroud. Is it a lack of quality competition or just a universal appeal for sci-fi that is causing its success?

International friends – why do you suppose Jumper is still doing so well round the globe?

My friend asked me today what film to go an see tonight. I looked at the Odeon listings. There was Jumper, Juno, National Treasure, The Bank Job, Semi-Pro and Be Kind Rewind. He had already seen Juno so apart from that there was nothing else that seemed appealing, so I told him Jumper.

I think that people like the concept, its different. There is also a lack of competition. If The Dark Knight were released now Jumper probably wouldn’t be doing so well.

  2. Phil Gee says:

Because the Odeons won’t show ‘Rambo’; just a guess.

  3. Because despite some of its failings its a pretty decent flick! Something new and orginal that wasn’t

    a: A sequel

    or

    b: made by Disney.

Ok those are kind of general but the film wasn’t a total flop. I’m in the UK and people I talk to here seemed to enjoy the film. I kinda put it in that Serenity genre of film. Good sci-fi but not over the top. Didn’t have to WOW you in every scene. Personally I look forward to a sequel (contradiction on what makes it a good film I know)

Haha, that could be it Phil!

Looks like I’m the first non red name to post. Jumper may just become a underground hit, we will have to see. I havn’t seen it yet, but everyone I know who has seen it says that if you are a sci fi fan, you will enjoy this. It does seem like however, that people in other countries, especially the europeans( understand something that we americans do not. Remember Donnie Darko?

  6. Hmm perhaps…I’m originally from the States but living in the UK, maybe I just get sucked into the buzz over here.

You bring up an interesting conversation point though flick, different cultures to lean towards different styles…

Maybe the film was just better than you and John thot. Your reviews have been spot on for the most part and I have been tuned in since Ghost Rider. But, I think you guys are too close to this one. My son and I enjoyed this film and hated Ghost Rider.

  8. DON says:

Overseas this movie is definitely a hit but domestically it will barely make back its budget.

International audiences love action+sfx+sci-fi movies so it makes sense that jumper is doing well.

  9. Vorrador says:

    it’s a damn good movie that’s why..
it didn’t have that OH MY GOD factor.
But it’s low key introduction to a series with a tease of more to come was awesome.

It was a fresh take on the scifi genre.

I for one think if Doug Liman gets to do asequel to this it will shut all the naysayers upp.

  10. Roshan says:

Basically any movie with good CGI sells out worldwide, if properly distributed. Remember Eragon making 174M$ outside US?!

International friends – why do you suppose Jumper is still doing so well round the globe?

    Because it’s a good movie.

  12. Orre Jensen says:

Jumper only doing well b/c of it’s sfx, si-fi story, and it’s hype up trailer. Hype up trailer is why I when to go see it. Beside that I don’t know why it is doing well. I thought it was a So-so type of film.

  13. plutonick says:

because it has scenes from ‘international’ places?

  14. Darran says:

Hi, I manage a cinema here in perth australia, and I think it went well because of hype and thats it, the marketing campaign was insane Jumper was everywhere, i feel thats why it did so well.

  15. Sabs says:

When I first heard about Jumper, I thought it was a pretty good concept. I absolutely hate Hayden Christian as an actor, but I thought I’d give him another try – and Samuel L. Jackson was in it. Heh.

From the very beginning, though, it wasn’t very good. It only got worse. Hayden Christian’s acting was terrible. There were good moments, and Jamie Bell was -spectacular-. Overall, though, the acting was horrible – and I don’t think the actual written script was very decent.

It just came out at a good time, I guess. There weren’t a lot of other good movies out, and Jumper had great trailers and whatnot…but the actual movie didn’t cut it. A lot of people had read the book, too.
