I live in Liverpool and have to go to Manchester to get to an IMAX, but i always find it's worth it. I don't think it's the future of cinema but i do think it's going to be with us for a good long while yet. I haven't had a bad IMAX experience yet and i've been 8 times now. Not only does it make for a unique viewing experience but the place is always clean and there are never any blood teenagers or small children ruining it (it's too expensive for them i think). Ever since they started showing mainstream films, I've been a frequent patron.
