Alvin and the Chipmunks Tops DVD Sales Charts

It looks like the much mocked Alvin and the Chipmunks has come out swinging and taken the DVD title its debut weekend. We get the sales numbers from the Caves of Yahoo:

After its surprisingly strong performance at the box office, it was perhaps less of a shock when “Alvin and the Chipmunks” debuted at No. 1 on the national DVD sales and rental charts Wednesday.

Last week, Fox said consumers snapped up 2.6 million DVDs of “Alvin” on its first day in stores Tuesday, the equivalent of about $45 million in spending. The film grossed $44.3 million in U.S. theaters in its opening weekend last December, and went on to earn more than $215 million. The top-selling Blu-ray Disc for the week also was “Alvin,” with “I Am Legend,” falling to No. 2.

The majority of critics hated this film, but it appears to have struck a chord with youngsters. Children across the land have nagged their parents into getting this film stat! I am quite surprised by the success of this film in the DVD market, for those of you that have children I ask you: Did your children like this film and did kids in general go ga-ga for this film?

I didn’t get a chance to see this film, I enjoyed the Chipmunks as a child myself and have no desire to see them bastardized. Enough people I trust have told me I can safely skip this one; and I plan to do just that.

Isn’t this one of the signs of the Apocalypse?

  2. Robert(wolf) says:

I know loads of people who bought it and I’m fucking disgusted.

  3. Slushie Man says:

I actually didn’t think it was that bad and it stuck true to each of the Chipmunk characters. didn’t like Dave though, and didn’t like the stereotypical love story sub-plot, but overall it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected.

The movie wasn’t GOD AWFUL HORRIBLE but it certainly wasn’t worth watching. I did get some good snorts (different from laughs) out of it but after the movie was over, I had no desire to go back and watch it again. It had some OK moments and some of the songs were catchy (read: catchy does not equal GOOD) but really, it was pretty forgettable.

Jason Lee looked embarrassed to be in this movie the entire time. I also didn’t really like how they changed the voices from the 80s cartoon. Also a lot of their fans shown at the concerts in the movie were NOT believably interested in their boy group sound.

After seeing this movie, one thing was sure, it was definitely made for children.

  6. Aaron says:

the movie was surprisingly faithful to the source material, so i think it’s hitting with adults just as much as kids. i bought it for my girlffiend since she loved it when we saw it in the theaters.

  9. Nbakid2000, its funny you mention the concert scenes.
I actually did some work on this *film* or at least when they were at the Orphium theatre in LA. (You can see the outside of the Orphium in the last big battle in Transformers). Anyhoo I remember all these kid extras crammed into the place. They would have some of them (during the scene I saw) dance in a kinda congo line up on the stage all while this AD (assc director) would be talking thru a megaphone telling them “ok kids remember the chipmonks are dancing here” and he would point to a greenscreen looking standee and then he would say “ok everybody get excited!” And yell Action.
I remember saying “sheesh this is going to be the biggest piece of crap ever”.

Well I like my Crow with a little mustard please….lol.

These chipmonks are about to become roadkill…. Done in by the Mach 5……Speed Racer is coming…….chipmonks! And he aint slowing down….
