Bad News For The Day The Earth Stood Still Remake
The people over at AICN had a chance to read the script for The Day The Earth Stood Still Remake, and the review is horrible. We wind of the story and following highlights from out friends at moviehole:
It would appear things aren’t going so well for the film, being as Uncapie was so distraught over the script he threw it against the wall while reading it. You can check out the whole story here.
Here are some highlights: A robot is in the film but its nothing like “Gort.” It’s called the “Totem” and apparently walks around on all fours, shoots a death-ray and stands upright like a totem pole when its finished. (LAME) The immortal words, “Klaatu Barada Nicto” are never uttered. Ever
Well this is horrible, disappointing and infuriating news. If you go to the source article at AICN there is a gaggle of reasons to be let down by this remake. It takes everything awesome about the original, and rips it out. This film looks like it is going to totally suck and be a complete insult to the glory of the original.
This is why I hate remakes. Seldom do they do justice to the original film, and quite often they are just flat-out awful. I had a hunch this film would suck, but am flabbergasted at how many titanically idiotic changes they have made. No Klaatu Barada Nicto? Are you serious? Fuck you.
If aliens are looking for more reasons to destroy our species with killer robots – you can add this remake to the list.

I SAID THIS WHEN THEY FIRST ANNOUNCED IT.
I said they would have to change the story to make it appeal to today’s audiences, because the first involves nothing but walking around the city.
I encourage everyone to avoid this piece of remake trash and send a message to Hollywood.
They were filming this around my school.

My buddy from the radio station snapped a few photos.
I could tell by the set that this wasn’t going to be good.
Not at all.
I was hoping that this remake would be something like “Leatherheads” in that they would hearken back to the time and the style of the original with some updated effects and perhaps some small changes.
I was excited to see them handle Gort and this “totem” business is trash. Ill wait for a trailer to see if I give this one a shot in theaters.
The movie is set in today’s time in everyway. Part of my school was a “temporary command center”, and it was full of LCD monitors, maps, pictures, etc. I mean, they say it was temporary, but there was like 5-6 grand in monitors there.
However, the rest of the stuff looked old and shitty. Like old printers and stuff.
I think the fact that the monitors had “Microsoft” plastered all over them really had something to do with their prevalence.
This seems like a bit of an overreaction. Still- the global warming issue? Fuck you. The weight of the Day the Earth stood still was about mans cruelty toward man- it was an anti-war film.
The fact it’s rewritten as An Inconvenient Truth Part II pisses me off.
Thanks for the inside scoop Goneafk!
Doug, be warned, I received a Cease & Desist from Fox regarding these script details.
It may be a grey area but I don’t have deep enough pockets to find out.
Vic
It doesn’t matter if TMB gets a Cease and Desist notice, the truth is out there now and we know the movie’s a piece of shit.
That does not surprise me Vic; the truth is disgusting.
Goneafk: Ah, SFU where even repairs get plastered into every sci-fi possible.
That was my favorite moment in Battlestar for local recognition.
“That’s not a ruined temple! They are just replacing that staircase!”
Hey Vic, you just holler me if those Fox suits start giving you grief. You gave Jamie a job so i’ve got your back:) It’s about time we issued Fox with a ‘Cease Making Shit’ notice.
I didn’t even know they were already filming it. So there’s no way to stop this potential train wreck? That’s very depressing.
The old movie is a huge pile of old crap. I cannot believe you guys want this to be just like the old one.
They are making it for the new generation so let them do their thing. Also i support environment and people who speak for environment. Those who think it is all BS i.e. global warming etc. can go fuck themselves.
Don, I don’t appreciate your rude interruption of me fucking myself. But don’t worry, you’re next!
Don, you are obviously the new generation they are aiming at – the generation that doesn’t like black and white films, the generation that thinks “anything old sucks” and the generation that goes to see any trash the theaters put out nowadays.
I hope you’re proud.
After reading the news article I have to say that what they are doing is completely off base and ridiculous. Chark is 100% right, it was an antiwar film. The whole purpose of the alien visit was because we were venturing out into space and we are still a violent race. This was a threat to other species and they felt that if we did not change our ways then they would have no choice but to wipe us out to protect themselves. This makes the aliens nothing short of fascists. “You will change your ways to what we want or else you die!” Does anyone really think that an advanced and enlightened society would use pollution as a justification for genocide? I had no problem with them remaking the movie because it could benefit from a modern production value. I just did not see how they could translate the script. In the original if you remember a sticking point was that Klaatu could not address all the world governments. Today that is a ho-hum and everyday event almost. But this idea is terrible and makes the aliens into genocidal fascists. I am almost at a loss for words on what they are thinking.
It is a shame that the original drama will be made unrecognizable by the altering of the staples of story’s cinematic identity. I could understand the placing of the threat to humanity relevant to modern concerns, but basic elements of the story should not change, i.e. Klaatu is Klaatu, the robot/android is Gort, and the craft should appear to be a part of the modern UFO experience.
Bureaucratic problems do not have to be revised. if anything, with the Bush administration, they’re far worse. the scientific community, despite the xenophobic Bush administration is still somewhat international. One could have used the replacement for big government, Big Business as the road-block to a global warning about global warming. But the point of this story should still be an ultimatum . Do what you want to yourselves but if you threaten the peace of the cosmos, you’re toast. No other message would make this film complete or even recognizable.
