Matthew McConaughey as Magnum P.I.?
Matthew McConaughey has been offered the the bristly mustached lead role of Thomas Magnum in the upcoming feature film version of the eighties television show Magnum P.I. Our friends over at The Hollywood Insider have more on the story.
McConaughey, we’re told, is reading the script from writer/director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball) and will decide shortly.
I used to watch Magnum P.I. when I was young, it was the only show that me an my mother could agree on, it had guns fights, funny dialog and of course the charming Tom Selleck. Although I am pretty sure that there is no one who can truly grow whiskers like Selleck if there is someone who can come close it’s going to be Matthew McConaughey.
McConaughey has a similar charisma and casual hotness as Selleck, simply updated for our times (the new and improved Magnum, now with more abs!). I’m a little nervous about the script but with a film like this no one is looking for Oscar quality, it just better be entertaining. As long as the writers don’t make Magnum P.I. a spoof like Starsky & Hutch I’ll be happy.
That, and the mustache is non negotiable. McConaughey if you take this role you’d better stop shaving today.

It’s hard to believe that Donald Belisario, Glen Larson and Floyd Johnson would allow Rawson Thurber(&Co) to ignore what loyal Magnum, p.i. fans really want – A SERIOUS SCRIPT WITH TOM SELLECK AND THE REST OF THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES CAST MEMBERS!!
Come on Hollywood..put your egos on hold and make the most of a rare opportunity! The majority of movie goers that would pay to see a Magnum, p.i. movie are baby boomers that really miss the tv series. Nothing would please them more than to again see the characters(aged)of Magnum, Higgins, Rick and TC together on the big screen. A well written script that brings us into the characters lives as they are today(with all the original tv series cast members)would be embraced by Magnum,p.i. fans worldwide! There are actually websites and internet petitions that clearly make the point..”if it doesn’t star Tom Selleck..and all of the original tv series cast members..we won’t go see it!” (an example: Magnum,p.i. thread at FerrariChat.com – 50,000+ members worldwide!)
I personally will only PAY to see a Magnum, p.i. movie that pays tribute to the tv series. (and I most certainly wont’t pay to see some ridiculous “Dukes of Hazzard” *@#!) Please don’t let this film be some gross charicature for the MTV generation!!

#1) CAST THIS MOVIE WITH THE ORIGINAL TV SERIES CAST MEMBERS ONLY!! (TOM SELLECK, JOHN HILLERMAN, LARRY MANETTI AND ROGER E MOSLEY)
#2) HIRE TOM CLANCY (OR?) TO WRITE A SERIOUS SCRIPT – ONE THAT TRULY SERVICES THE SPIRIT OF “MAGNUM”.
I had the good fortune to work as an extra on Magnum, p.i. during season six. (one episode) That experience left quite a lasting impression. Tom Selleck is truly a distinct gentleman, and one of Hollywood’s greatest “leading men”. I do not understand why any casting director would consiously elect to use some other actor in the role of Magnum, and to ignore the summation of internet postings. Perhaps you should take a lesson from George Lucas – he is giving us the real “Indiana Jones”.
A Magnum, p.i. movie has the potential to be extraordinary – now “make it so!”

Ok, gotta agree here, Magnum without the originals is not Magnum, just a cheap replication. I’m in my early thirties and think Selleck has only gotten better with age. I won’t watch it with anyone but the originals. Now back to watching Season 4 on DVD!
I agree with Mr. T. If George Lucas can give us the real Indiana Jones, Bellasario can give us back the real Magnum. There is no reason not to do it as GL did with Indy. Bring us back our Magnum, older, wiser, more careworn but still the Thomas we all know and love.
I will only watch Magnum P.i. if all the original cast members are there. I have a lot of good memories watching Magnum as a Kid, don’t ruin them.

Just heard about the remake today for the first time. I was a big fan also!
Here’s my idea of the perfect cast.
Magnum: Adam Sandler
Higgins: Michael Caine
TC: Michael Duncan
Rick: Steve Buscemi
Forget the serious stuff…it won’t cut it!
This cast would add a twist and curiosity to go see!
