Parody or not, it wouldn’t hurt to ask permission first. If they had explained it to Woody, then he may have even given his blessing to go ahead with the ad.

This is total parody. Between the image and the yiddish text, they were obviously making fun of Woody, and he should have a sense of humor about it. My guess is this goes nowhere. And why is he suing almost a year later? Does he have a movie to promote?
Maybe American Apparel should send over one of their hotshorts-wearing models to talk Woody out of this.

Smells fishy. Woody probably needs the money and saw this as a way to make some fast cash. I mean the billboard was up like almost a year ago. And it’s total spoof. As a public figure parody is protected by the First Amendment. Well at least it’s getting Woody and American Apparel some free press.

Suing for big bucks is just a tactical manuever. You sue for a huge amount, bigger than you actually want, so that when the suckers decide to settle out of court for a lesser amount, you end up with the amount that you want. They did it w/o his permission. They’ve got no choice but to settle.
