Ever since I first saw the Frieza Saga, I've been one of the biggest DBZ fans on the planet. I've watched the original Dragonball series, and the direction that they took DBZ in from the original series was absolutely amazing. I haven't seen this live action version and don't intend to for fear of puking. However, from what I've been reading up on it, it's a poor man's attempt to do an origin story. I've seen it written on many sites that bringing DBZ, the real story we all fell in love with, to the big screen is an impossible task. I disagree... It can be done successfully because the visual technology exists to bring those awesome fight scenes into existence. CGI has come a long way since Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The biggest hinderance to this project is that the current pool of crap hollywood writers lack the imagination to tell this story. The anime series was spread out over numerous episodes and cliff-hangers, whereas the hollywood version only has a 2-3 hour window in which to tell a complete saga. Instead of all that unnecessary backstory crap, why not just handle that with flashbacks and leave out the drawn out history. This is after all primarily a movie for the fans of the anime series, and of course we know enough about the show to fill in all the blanks.
In order to do justice to a DBZ movies writers would have to stop trying to literally bring the look of the characters from the anime to the big screen (ie. Goku's hair-style, Bulma's purple hair-color, etc.) Just tell a good story that develops the personality of the characters on their own merits. Stop limiting this sage to a 2-3 hour window and break it up into 3 complete movies (The Arrival of the Saiyans, the Search for Namek, and the Showdown with Frieza). Maybe Peter Jackson from Lord of the Ring's should take over this effort. I'm so sick of hollywood taking great stories and churning out crapola. If I had $240 million like Bill Gates that I could use as toilet paper and not think twice about losing, I'd pay to have this story done right.

For those who didn't know, Dragon Ball is actually based on the famous asian novel "Journey to the West" ... and the main character in that novel is the monkey king(he uses power pole as weapon and he flys on Nimbus cloud). Other characters also being brought over included Oolong(the pig), Ox King, Chi Chi, etc. And as most of the fans know the writer of DB is Akira Toriyama(Asian) so it's a reasonable assumption that Goku is an asian-based character. People can argue Goku is an alien and not asian, but that wasn't the case when DB was first created. (Saiyan wasn't introduced until DB Z) Come on, just look at the buildings and clothings(especially in the original DB series) how can u argue that's not an asian setting ? For crying out loud even the title has "DRAGON" in it !! And Master Roshi, Grandpa Gohon, Mai, Chi Chi, Yamcha look more asian than Goku in the anime so that they have to be casted by asians instead ? People are blinded by their ignorance/arrogance and can't accept the fact that their beloved hero is actually not their own race. This is sad. This is sad.....

You know, Tienko, whatever nice fantasies you are having on those producers, it won't change the fact they're actually planning a sequel that won't get any more intelligent than this one

I'm 39 yrs old and have seen every episode since it was released, now my sons are even more hooked on DB than I am and we are all die hard fans.

But when all is said and done....we all know it isn't going to be anything like the animated series.

Unless it was made in CGI format the producers are never going to find a 6yr old boy who can replicate Goku let alone speak more than 5 words in a sentence.

Speaking for myself and if any-one else agrees, I think we should take it for what it is. ENTERTAINMENT. For me nothing will ever top the animated series but I will still watch the movie and if it's good...great and if it's bad ...well thats life.

When you try to see all the faults or all the things they didn't do or you waste good entertainment time critisising the movie you miss out on all the good things.

Who knows, if the movie producers get a good enough response they could make the sequel even better than the first.

See what I mean about white supremism taking over some people's judgement?

Anyway, I wonder how those guys cussing at the criticizers over the past months on the basis there aren't enough information for judgement are feeling now that all the news coming out are indicating the movie's going to suck and speed bomb.

Most of the dumbass people that comented on this movie dont know what the hell there talkin bout an jus want to opinionate. It pisses me off that people think that jus cuz they started watchin dragonball first makes them better fans. Thats retarded and doesn't make sense. I'm a die hard fan of dbz cuz I've watched it since I wuz 5years old but that dont mean that somewon who watched the whole series last week can't be a fan to.

The only dude that has a valid point is FORMLESS. How can you base your prediction of how good a movie will be off of a couple of pictures. Bottom line is that you dont know how good or bad it will be until it comes out in theaters.

And why the FUCK should goku be Asian?! Have you seen the show? He is not Asian! He doesn't even look Asian at all. And I dont know why people are baggin on chatwin. If you look closely he looks just like goku. And remember that goku wasn't that buff in the begginin. He was skinny but strong and kind of cut.

Oh and F.Y.I. Chatwin and other main cast have signed on for 3 movies, probably dragonball, z, and gt.

Feel free to criticize me but plz have a valid point before you do.

This is a ridiculous concept. Goku is pretty much a gargantuan man in stature, he's a skinny kid who has spiky hair. We're going to have another "Street Fighter The Movie" on our hands!
