This movie did have the most potential. Just the first five-ten minutes were awesome! But Thor was kind of a loser, the kid needed to die, although the whole racism thing didn’t really offend me. I would give it a 6 just for all the women… the hot, violent women.

  2. Joey says:

Nagy, i know you said you haven’t enjoyed much other non Kirby/Simonson Thor stuff but i would wager you would really dig Matt Fraction’s Thor: Ages Of Thuner, and Thor: Reign Of Blood one-shots.

Wow I was surprised you found as many good things about this movie as you did. I did not like it as much as you did. While I did find the stuff with Tamar cool, it was not enough for me to give it positive or even halfway. Don’t tell you are gonna have Thor and give me fucking Tarzan. He sucked big time, Thor the son of Taurus? Give me a fucking break. Also, I am glad I was not the only one who found some of the racism disturbing but I am surprised that ya’ll did not bring up some of the really bizarre statements about women which I found worse than the racism. Two in particular was that women have to give up their souls to gain power that nature never intended them to have. The other was that rule by women was unnatural and by giving men power this would end war and suffering. This was as offensive as the Rape Boat, but at least that was not a central philosophical point of Duel of Champions. Overall I can only give this a 2 hydra heads out of 9. It did have some cool elements to the movie but there was too much shit for me to like it.

I got into comics many years ago and I was very familiar with the Simonson run on Thor but I unfortunately never got a chance to check it out. The one run that got me hooked was Peter David’s run in the Incredible Hulk. He got Todd McFarlane and Dale Keown to work on those runs with him and in the process made the Hulk fresh and interesting. They actually have a DVD set which has all of the comics on file and I got that as a present. I got that along with the Fantastic Four. I hope they make one with Thor, but if you are an Avengers fan they have that out too.

  4. Wintle says:

Joey: I’ve placed Thor: Ages of Thunder in Nagy’s hands a few times. I had been looking forward to Fraction’s take on the material since he first announced it, but I have to admit that it wasn’t nearly as metal as I hoped it would be. The narration and detailed artwork drained the entire thing of much-needed energy. Nagy had already left for the States before I could get Reign of Blood to him. I felt that one was a vast improvement.

BRDanzig: I can’t speak for the others, but one of the things that I look for in certain movies is, for lack of a better term, certain psychotronic properties. That is, movies that appeal on a more emotional, visceral, possibly insane level, if that makes any sense. Despite its many flaws, Thor and the Amazon Women had these qualities in spades. I would rather watch one flawed yet manic piece of trash over any ten of the cookie-cutter movies being shown on the big screen today.

As for the handful of sexist comments made in the film, I felt they were drowned out by the sheer amount of machisma on display as a counterpoint.
