Wiseman Named Gears of War Director

By Rodney - June 17, 2008 - 07:44 America/Montreal

Gears of War might be an instant success on the XBox 360 platform, and when that much money is made by a game, you know the movie adaptation is not far behind. A Gears of War movie likely got greenlit in the foyer of a BestBuy on the day it was released. Now at least we know its got a writer and director.

Yahoo says:

New Line is putting “Gears of War” in motion, setting Len Wiseman (”Live Free or Die Hard”) to direct the video-game adaptation.

Chris Morgan, who wrote the upcoming Universal action features “Wanted” and “The Fast and the Furious 4,” has been hired to write the screenplay. Wiseman and Morgan will develop the story treatment.

Now I did enjoy the action and pacing for Die Hard 4 (I still can’t say its real title without rolling my eyes) so we know this guy can handle the action. The writer gave us Cellular, so we hope he can scribe us a story that puts you in that seat of suspense and mortal danger that Gears delivers. His current lineup of projects are yet to be released, so we will see.

With video games becoming more cinematic you would think that they could make movies out of video games a lot better.

Who knows? Maybe they will. I will believe it when I see it.

Expect the Hate from critics and the love of only the fans of the game.

The only potential hope for a good video game -> movie adaptation is Metal Gear I reckon. I had high hopes for Silent Hill and the director was a big fan of the games, but even that fell short.

In any case, the reverse is often usually the case too – most video game/movie tie-ins are also weak. The only really well reviewed example I can think of is the Chronicles of Riddick game.

The problem is that in either case, the game/movie is usually just an attempt to cash in with a known fan-base which usually results in a sub-standard end product.

I am going to be looking forward to this. I have only played a few hours of the game but would love to see the story of future marines taking on aliens. Hopefully they dont screw it up like they did the DOOM movie, which was one of the worst movies ever made form one of the best video games ever.

As all video game movies bomb i have no hope for this already(as a matter of fact now that i think about it, any movie made from a different source material isn’t all that great with the exception of comics), but as someone who owns the game i can tell you that the premise is not half bad for a movie translation. I think ANY video game movie adaption can be good if someone just takes the time to understand that people want quality in their movie adaption and not just a familiar character of the game and a lot of explosions.

I love the game and hope the movie turns out great, but I wonder if we wont just get another Starship Troopers.

Wiseman was wise to choose this. He is perfect for such kind of movie.

  8. New Line??????

Did they just rise from Warner’s inferno and nobody said anything, or is this a holdover and simply the last hurrah with the name of New Line Cinema?

BTW, Torm. Not all movies based on video games”bombed” Tomb Raider, Resident Evils, Silent Hill and the first Mortal Kombat didn’t “bomb”. Suck the big lemon tit, ah, that’s something else.

I’m a gears fan, and I can tell this will be a piece of shit. With people more or less acting in the games, why are they even entertaining these nonsense films? CliffyB is just so happy he’s raking in cash he couldn’t give a crap whether these morons ruin a game that is JUST FINE as it is.
