Already Miss Euro 2008? Go Rent Shaolin Soccer
I’m not really much of a Soccer fan. But even I get caught up in the energy of it whenever the World Cup (FORZA ITALIA!!!!!) comes around every four years… and to a lesser degree when the Euro Cup pops up. Euro 2008 is now over (congratulations Spain), and it was seriously one hell of an exciting tournament (thank you Turkey) and now that it’s done… I find that I miss turning on the TV and being able to find Soccer anywhere.
Thank goodness that the only thing better than sports is movies… and here to fill in the gap is one of my all time favorite sports movies… and one of my all time favorite asian films in general… the Stephen Chow masterpiece “Shaolin Soccer“!
Yeah, I’ve talked about this flick before, but this is a great time to watch this sucker.
A group of brothers who believe the practice of Kung Fu can better the lives of everyone, decide to form a Soccer team based on their mastery of Kung Fu in order to win a national tournament so everyone will know how great and how useful Kung Fu is.
This movie is flat out HILARIOUS… the visual effects are terrific and it’s pretty exciting too… but really the most notable thing about the film is the incredible humor. Chow (who also did Kung Fu Hustle) is known for his ability to deliver laughs, but Shaolin Soccer is more than just a comedy.
If you’ve been watching any of Euro 2008, this is a great time to appreciate this movie. Go get it. go go go… and remember… Kung Fu is great.

liek Charlie Hunnam said, for fuck sake, stop saying soccer !
and yes this movie is great
YES!! I love this film…brilliant little story that follows up with some awesome action and kinda cheesy special effects. Also check out Kung Fu Hustle!!!
Ironically, this is in today’s rotation on the ‘Spike’ network. – Mind you, they show dubbed versions, which no one should watch.
Thanks from Spain.
if you like football, excuse me, i wanted to mean soccer, you must see de semifinal match Rusia-Spain.
And, yes!, Shaolin Soccer is the most ilarius film about soccer ever.
Greetings from Spain
Never thought you were a Footie fan John. You also follow Club Football?
ya this movie is good if you are into the whole asian comedy routine…i personally like kung fu hustle better but this movie has some nice parts….i dont really get into this kinda humor but if u allready jock this kinda stuff cause its asian it wont matter u will like a anything stamped asian….i didnt like the fat guy at all but the rest of the ensemble is funny in its own way.
i was going for the netherlands btw
John, I am sorry but I can no longer be one of your daily blog readers. After hearing that you like this movie I must no purge myself of any influences you might have given me. My 2 least favorite movies that I have seen are SpiderMan 3 and Shalion Soccer. So good by TMB it was great reading while I could.
I sincerely hope you’re joking mandarinorange…I mean what did you expect….John to be a direct clone to all things you like?
Yes, that was sarcasm. About 90% of what John says I agree with. So when he posts something that is completely opposite of my opinion I get caught way off guard.
