Elf Quest: The Movie

It looks like the fantasy comic book series Elf Quest is next up to bat for film adaptation. We get wind if this news from our friends at cinematical:
Elfquest has just been optioned by Warner Bros. Rawson Thurber (of Dodgeball fame) is set to write, direct, and produce, and there’s no word yet on whether it will be animation or live action. Hollywood has been toying with an adaptation for a long time, but have only managed a few animated attempts.
Elfquest really belongs to that 70’s and 80’s style of fantasy — Tolkien inspired, but with more sex and magic powers. It’s all about a tribe of elves called the Wolfriders, who fight for survival on an alien world called Abode. There they war with trolls, encounter primitive humans, and discover that they aren’t the only elf tribe on the planet.
I have never read Elf Quest and am not familiar with the comic book series, but according to their official site – its been around since 1978 I am always game for more fantasy action, especially when it involves throngs of feral elves!
For those of you like myself, that are unfamiliar with the series – feel free to check out the official Elf Quest site. They have a whack of free comics available online and gobs of “stuff” for you to check out.
Those of you that are familiar with Elf Quest, would you welcome a live action adaptation, and if so, what would you like to see in it?

I am in the same mindset as you. Honestly don’t remember it but fully welcome more fantasy movies. Hell I’m still praying for a movie based off the R.A. Salvatore series on Drizzt Do’Urden.
Sweet! I don’t know how it would work as a live action film. But with all the crazy technology out there maybe it could work. The real question is which format would have the broadest appeal?
i was never into elfquest, tho i thought the concept was kinda cool. but the real question is: will the elves have 3 fingers or 4?

I think a live action film could be pulled off, although animation/cgi would do the comic characters more justice concerning the look of the characters. I’d love to see that weird winged elf in action flying along with the eagles, that would be awesome in live action.
They should make a Legend of Zelda movie instead.
It simply HAS to be animated to do it any justice. I’ve been a diehard EQ fan for 20 years, and part of the appeal is the beauty of the art. Sometimes live action works for adaptation… but not this time. YAY ELFQUEST!
Elfquest is one of my all time favorite comics. Back then the comics were large format, same as the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…I sill have Book 4, the graphic novel. This could be awesome. I bet Wendy and Richard Pini are very happy.
I’m a bookworm and read all kinds of genres– but there’s nothing that has touched me to the depth Elfquest has. I’m ecstatic to hear this news, and hope the movie will stay true to the spirit and tone of the original.
I’m familiar with Elf Quest… weirdly enough, I’m weirded out by this news.
Hmmm… Intereeeeeesting…
Cell animation. Not CGI, not live action, and for pity’s sake, NOT that horrible CGI-overlaced-motion-capture thing.
I am very very cautiously optimistic, but they’ve also been talking EQ movie for twenty years. I think I’ll believe it when I see it.
Also, given that every other studio they’ve worked with in the past has gone under suddenly, people might want to think about offloading their WB stock… ;)
I remember getting in trouble in 7th grade for getting caught reading Elf Quest Book 3 graphic novel in class. I loved the series, the characters & the artwork. No matter how they make it, I’ll be very interested in how they plan to pull it off. Elf Quest was one of the most violent books I read as a kid.
Oh, & I think there was an orgy seen too.
I have read ElfQuest since I was six and have never since found a more moving, engaging story. I think that as long as the writing is true to the spirit and characters of ElfQuest, and they cast the actors to pull it off, a live-action EQ movie would be good. But speaking as someone whose concept of the characters has been so shaped by Wendy Pini’s lovely art, nothing could capture it like flat animation in her style. In any event, I am just thrilled to pieces that WB has taken it on!
I was aware of elfquest (is it still ongoing now or has the series finished?) and although I was into scifi and fantasy at the time I never managed to find an issue to read. I have to admit while the art looked nice, the style didn’t necessarily appeal to me. Anybody want to recommend a good Elfquest trade for me to read first?
I can’t wait for the movie. I have been a fan since I was 5 years old. I love the Elfquest comics!! I would watch it no matter what the format….
if they do live action, they better chose luke goss(hellboy 2) as cutter.
i’been an elf quest fan for who knows long,( weird that i can’remember, unlike most of the other people that posted here, i’m just a kid, 11, to be exact) and i would love to see it on the big screen, but im afraid that there gonna mess it up, give people who havn’t read the comic books the wrong idea,(youknow, like they did whith Ghost Rider [that was a good flik though]). live action would be good, butthat wouldn’d realy do the characters justice, and CGI make me think that Buzz Lightyear is gunna pop uot at ay moment and scream “to infininty, and beoynd!”, the only real wayy they could make cutter look like cutter is if they had Wendy abd Richerd do a cartoon thing with it, but even if they did that, it would remind me of that stupid legend of zelda cartoon (wich didn’t do the games justice at all!!!!) and the Hobbit animated flik (whitch wasn’t that bad, actualy). they would have to do a damn good job on that for me not to get REALY angry.if they mess it up, i’ll be pissed.
oh, and to Shadopup, they have them in big, colour grafic-novels now, try to get book one and read that. If you like it (wich you will) get the next few, read those, ive read up to 6, just cuz thats all i own, 6 was kinda the start of a whole new story, though, read up to 5 if you want what was itended to be the whole sieries ( i think, dont quote me on that last part though).
i grew up reading it and my dad started reading it when he was sixteen i love it and cant wait for the movie
It would have to be a live action or it wont be successful. What adult is going to see an animation without their kids, and if they do it right and true to the series, there is way too much hot elf sex to cut out.
I found elfquest on my uncle’s book shelf when I was 10 years old, and i have been a fan ever since. Now i am introducing my family to the world of the elves and my husband is hooked too. I’m 32 now, if I have to wait til I’m sixty for the movie, I will. I don’t care if its a cartoon or people or whatever, I’ll be there on opening night!!!!
i’ve been a elf quest fan for over 20 something yrs. since jrhs. wow im old. so are my children i’ve been waiting for this for a pretty long time. i think this movie should stay on the story line wendi and richard pini created such a great story line and art work. but the bad part is all story lines are changed. but i’ll still be the first person (family)on line for the movie. wow i’m so excited know i can’t wait.
I would definitely be interested but only if Wendy Pini maintains creative control over what the Script Writer(s), Director and Producer(s) her work.
Nice!
I own the comic set including duplicate Mint copies of issues 1-3. Sweet set! Will sell after the movie and see what happens! Still have a back up non-mint “reading” set to keep for me and my kids.
Ant
must be animated. cant create the like-ness of the elves with real actors
