Friends Movie on the Way?
Everytime you see an interview with a former member of TV’s Friends, they always seem to get around to asking about how often they see each other. Well if this rumour is true, they might all be hanging out in one place again very soon.
Cinematical says there is a possibility of a Friends movie coming to the big screen:
a film based on the popular series has gotten the green light to start filming in the next year and a half, with all of the actors interested in reprising their roles — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, and David Schwimmer.
One of my favourite comedies of all time is The Whole Nine Yards with Matthew Perry and dare I say it, but he and Jennifer Aniston might just be the only ones with a real career anymore. And that isn’t say anything at all.
I think it would be cool to see them all back again in a TV special, but more because after so long on TV, you almost felt like these guys were your friends and you want to see them again. Just to have a few beers and catch up.
But I wonder if this is true, does the success of the Sex and the City Movie pushing this to the bigscreen instead of a TV Reunion event where it belongs? Sex and the City had a rabid following. Like Star Trek conventions in the 80s, but for girls.
But as popular as Friends was, does it deserve a feature film?

Woow, that would be great! Big Friends fan over here… :)
YES!
I still enjoy the hell out of the re runs, and everytime I see a chapter, I laugh like its the first time Im seeing it. Friends is the only one capable of that…at least for me.
I´d love to see a movie with them…
I’m a fan of Sex and the City, but have no desire to see the movie till DVD. I have to say I feel the same for Friends. I would rather see a 2 hour TV reunion episode then pay for a movie ticket. Though I’m sure a lot of Friends fans will feel differently.
If there is a God, e will not allow this to pass. I hate this show like fat people hate diets.
I wouldn’t worry; whether they have succesful careers right now or not, the cast will have to all agree on a script that gives them equal amount of things to do (and becomes a long drawn out muddled mess in the process), and will probably price themselves out of the market as well, or at least so high that once all the salaries are tallied up, it will be impossible for the film to make a profit.
But for the sake of all the die hard fans of the show, I hope i’m wrong and you can have a great film.
Could…. Chandler Bing…. need another movie?
No. I am not a Friends fan and will not bother seeing the movie.
I’m not sure this is a good idea artistically — I agree that I’d rather see a TV special (Seinfeld also…?) — but there is a huge potential profit there. I’d argue that Friends had a much larger fan base than Sex and the City. Maybe not quite as rabid within a focused demographic, but it reached a much larger age range, crossed both genders, and was on broadcast television. HBO’s reach is large, but still a fraction of a top 5 network show.
OMG!! im dying here!! i wish that could be true!!! friends the besttttttt
This was my favorite TV show for the 10 years it was on. I’d be there opening night.
I don’t care who I piss off, friends is one of the stupidest shows I’ve ever seen.
It will be huge……
Ok i’m a big fan of the show so i give my green light on that one. Go Chandler!!!!!!
If everything is properly taken care of like the 3 camera thing the show had and the laughter track (which was sometimes annoying)
i do not see what the harm would be. Friends is a far greater show than that stupid sex and the city gig. I mean come on! American women trying to find “love” by rediculing themselves on big screen? No! But Friends? One of the most seen and loved shows on eath that made us laugh for a whole decade? YES!!!!! GO CHANDLER GO!!!
I don’t think the series have any material to bring to the big screen. SaTC was left hanging in the end, so it made sense to sort of ‘finalize’ the series by bringing it to the big screen. Whether they did finalize it or not is another point (I haven’t watched SaTC movie).
Don’t get me wrong, I love Friends like a fat kid loves cake, but I wouldn’t watch this. Friends is finished. Done.
I think it will be a great idea.. and i think its more fair to say that only David schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston have had successful careers since Friends. Matthew Perry is hilarious but he hasnt done anything in a while. David Schwimmer has become a great director and Jen has made a few good movies that havent quite smashed box office records if u exclude the “Break up”. All the actors would be looking to this movie to reinvigorate their careers in what should be a box office smash hit. Jen needs a strong leading man in her movies for the movie to do well. She cant rely on being Brad Pitt’s former wife anymore. This movie is going to be awesome and apart from Matt LeBlanc, i dont think think theyre doing it for the money. They loved making the show for 10 years and ive heard that it was David Schwimmer and Jennifer Ansiton that were holding out on the deal. Jen because she didnt want to be stereotyped as Rachel and David because he felt that he didnt want to tamper with a succesful show after it had ended. I think theyve lured him into it by allowing him to help out with the direction of the movie. Jen has accepted this role now to drive publicity for her new movies that are coming out soon.
John
Friends filmed in front of a live studio audience. They did not use a laugh track.
Personally, I’m a HUGE Friends fan, but I don’t see there being a two-hour movie storyline anywhere. I mean, the show was popular for the fact that it carried on in a sequence over the years. It wasn’t written to be made into a movie, and the end story didn’t leave people hanging (like mentioned above for SatC). I know someone out there could write a great story, but the joy of the series will not transfer into the big screen, IMHO.
I’ve also heard rumors that everyone wants to make the film, EXCEPT Jennifer Anniston. I’m not sure how true that is, but one can never be certain about any rumour out of Hollywood.
BTW, I thought Courtney Cox-Arquette has a decent career. Isn’t her production company responsible for a couple hit shows, and isn’t her new series also doing well?
Im not sure what her prodcution comapny does but her series DIRT is finished.
Okay…can anyone tell me how this would actually be accomplished on the big screen? As mentioned above, Friends was filmed before a live studio audience on a very sitcom-looking-soundstage. On the other hand, Sex in the City was shot on location throughout the series just like a feature film and was thus, very easy to translate to full-length movie. Wouldn’t the visual disconnect from standard sitcom to film be a bit unnerving to the fans? And–dear lord–are they going to have to include details of the “Joey” spin-off?
This just isn’t a good idea.
The best we can hope for is some type of reunion episode (or miniseries) in the same vain as A Very Brady Christmas. Frankly, there would still be profit to made in doing it this way–can you imagine the crazy ratings such an event would generate? NBC could sell ad space like it’s the freakin’ Super Bowl.
And for the record…DIRT was a terrible show. On par with that monkey-playing-baseball movie Matt LeBlanc was in.
There would certainly have to be a set change. Maybe have a scene where they all visit the building they used to live in to find some strange mirror universe of themselves living across the hall from each other but hating them or something.
There were a few friends episodes that were on location like a park or somewhere, but they always felt like a set. This would have to change.
They dont have to include all the details of Joey, just that he was following his acting career. They don’t have to go indepth on that. Depending on how much time they say passed between then and the movie they could just say Joey got a gig acting somewhere.
Us two are here to say somethings about the friends movie. We are massive fans of f.r.i.e.nd.s and we know what the writers will do it will be good. However set the movie of as you left it : Chandler and Monica with there new house and there new babies ( Jack and Erica ) and joey with his new room. Ross and Rachel hopfully living together with todler emma. Pheobe and mike happily married for quite some time now. Then something happens… Quite frankly we are extremely excited for the moive and SHAME ON THOSE WHO DOUBTED IT!
Does Friends deserve a movie?
Hell yea it does!
With all this other shit coming out like Superhero Movie and Meet The Spartans, no movie needs to justify itself.
I think if the script is half good the movie will make a shit load of money and not just in the USA but worldwide. I think I saw something along time ago that Friends is shown in like 26 different countries around the world.
And oh yea Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston are not the only people on the show that still have a career……David Schwimmer recently directed a movie…Run Fat Boy Run. It wasnt great but its still work. And Courtney Cox was on the FX series Dirt for a year but I hear it just got cancelled. Lisa Kudrow also did a miniseries called the Comeback* (I think).
HELL YES they better bring it to the big screen, i was never a fan of sex and the city only watched now and then and i went to see the movie and i loved it, and let me tell you i am a major fan of friends i watch re runs all the time i know the lines like the back of my had i love this show and i think they could do alot with it if they brought it to the big screen so they def should i know alot of people would love it ….i love this show and i am praying i see a preview for the movis soon!!!
I am all for a movie adaptation of friends as long as the writing staff from the show plays a roll in the movie. the back and forth you get between the cast member to me is what made the show. as long as the movie has the sarcastic chandler and spacey pheobe then i will see it twice.
OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES. I WOULD SO TOTALLY WATCH ITTT!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I will DEFINATELY go see the Movie!! To this day i still watch every season over and over again!! Im a Huge Fan and ive always wanted a Friends movie to be made! The perfect movie would be Ross and Rachel’s Wedding of course, Monica and Chandler living in the house in WestChester with the twins grown up, Joey getting a lead role in some great movie and finding a hot celebrity gf or wife, and Phoebe and Mike possibly having a baby together!! I really hope they go through with it because i feel like there is so much more that needs to be told.
No doubt about it I am huge fan, I have all the Episodes 1-10 Complete Seasons..I just really love watching it over and over again. Just can’t get enough of it!!! Especially at the end when Monica and Chandler just finally got to be parents!! It isn’t fair, And Phoebe’s finally got a life that she wanted…And Racheal and Ross Finally got back together to try and work it out..Plus the whole acting thing for Joey has all worked out the way he wanted it.. Their should be more to finish, just when all the Friends got what they wanted!!
